"I have big feet. I mean REALLY big. They are wide and flat and BIG. Imagine an eight-foot duck. Now you’re getting the picture. It is very hard for me to find hiking boots. Most stores don’t carry my size, and many companies don’t even make them. I was very happy when I found my Merrill Eagle GTX boots. They fit very nicely. They are sturdy, and completely waterproof (so far.) The foot-beds are adequate. They are a bit soft for my taste. My pack weighed about 65 pounds on my last trip (I’m a big guy) and the Eagles were not quite adequate. Fortunately I have strong ankles. The traction also leaves a bit to be desired. I would have preferred Vibrum soles. I fell through the Ice into ankle deep water in freezing cold Lake Superior on my last trip, and didn’t feel a drop. A solid boot for light weight people and packs."
