"i bought an eTrex for hiking and geocaching with the kids. My wife and I took a 7 mile hike down a mountain and along a little creek at the bottom of the mountain. It worked well at the top of the mountain even with some tree cover, but after we got to the bottom and we were between mountains, we lost connection and never got it back until we returned to the summit 4 hours later. If you will be hiking in areas of either mountains or tree cover, don't expect this to help you. If you hike in the desert or on a beach, this is the perfect product. I took it geocaching last weekend with the kids in an area of modest tree cover and found that it was very accurate."

"I love my eTrex. It worked great during a backcountry snowshoeing trip near St. Helens this past December. The trails were covered with 2 feet of snow but the eTrex kept us on target and we found our way with no problems. We also used it to check our altitude periodically. However, I found it hard to use when there was a lot of tree cover. Yes, bring extra batteries."

"Great little GPS unit. I have used mine from everything from backpacking to mtn. biking, hunting and fishing. It has never let me down. Always carry spare batteries. "
