Description
The trail begins at the Caney Creek trailhead, a few miles up from Shady Lake. When I did this hike the weather was cool and wet due to rains from the night before. Despite this, the trail was GREAT! Most of the caney creek trail winds along the valley of the creek itself. However, at a few spots the trail rises up the sides of ridges and away from the creek (this is to re-naturalize the trail at these areas). Lots of lush, grassy flats and beautiful views of the creek.
The CAney creek trail itself follows the creek from its head waters to its convergence with the Cossatot river. The trail is fairly heavly used so keeping on the trail is no problem. I personally have always combined the caney creek trail with the Buckeye mountain trail for a good 10 mile loop hike. Probabley one of the best trails in AR.

Directions to Hike
take Hwy. 246 west from Athens, AR to FR#38 follow this 9.2 miles. The trailhead is on the left.
