Description
This hike is great for beginners. It is approx. 8 mile round trip. The trail starts out fairly easy and gradually gets a little togher as you go. There are several streams to follow and various waterfalls and pools to look on as the hike takes on greater difficulty. It is a great one day hike, but if you choose to stay the night up at fern lake be sure to get a back country permit and bring alot of warm clothing no matter what time of year! The final elevation is 10,800 ft. I recommend this hike for all levels.

Directions to Hike
From Estes park- Enter the east side entrance of the Rocky Mountain Natn'l park. Continue for 6 mile to the trail head directory. Another 2.5 mile and you are at the Fern Lake trial head. Starting elevation is 7,900 ft. Follow the trial to the lake. If you wish you can continue on to bear lake which is another 4.7 mile and stay the night there with a permit. The descent takes about a third of the time which on average is 1.5 hrs.
