Sand Ridge
I have to disagree with the other reviewers- I had a great one-night solo trip to Sand Ridge. I saw only 2 horseback riders the entire day, and no other hkers. Yes, the trail is soft sand- a lot like hiking through a beach, way above the waterline. However, the plant animal life was surprising for Illinois- every sort of bird imaginable, real cacti, red, purple and blue desert flowers, "sand prairies" - all nestled in a pine and oak forest. Trail markings are so-so; be aware of the many unmarked and unmapped firebreaks, which coincidentally look much like the trails. I did a good 12-15 mile hike in about 5 hours, stopping along the way to observe the scenery.
