Norvin Green State Park
Norvin Greene is a great place to detox. Especially if going up and down small mountains all day is your idea of fun. Highlights of the typical circular involve; a trip through the area know as the "Pine Paddies" Which takes you over mountain number one and into a small wetland on the other side with spectacular views of the Wanaque reservoir. ONce down, follow the yellow trail up Assiniwikam mountain (an indian name). There is a really special ne view where you can see EVERYTHING for miles. Go down Assiniwikam and over the shoulder of the mountain to the otter hole. The otter hole is a really great little swimming spot, especially on hot days. Follow the creek on down then up back onto the ridge. Head on over to "Yoo-Hoo" point. A favorite local place for Yodeling and yelling "Yoo-Hoo". Down the mountain and up the last. The last mountain is called high point. It's a bald rock peak covered with gneiss. A really cool place to chill. If you still have ambition, visit the Roomy mine. A real iron mine from the 1800's pretty large for new jersey standards. As a variation, one could do it in winter like I did last week. With a foot of snow, and some plastic pants and gaiters, one could climb up the mountains on one side and slide down on their bums on the other sides. I had a great day doing that and a whole lot of bushwacking! Happy Hiking.
