Description
Having climbed this trail previously in 1999 I considered it to be a short yet challenging climb well suited to alpine training.

However I climbed this trail again in April 2003 and was disappointed to see that the trail conditions have deteriorated greatly. The trail maintains a well-marked and easily navigable path for the first 2 miles of the ascent, but the last 1/2-mile becomes ill defined and somewhat dangerous.

A series of fixed cables and dilapidated step and ladder systems has fallen into disrepair and leaves climbers to scramble and seek their own routes. Adverse weather and snow can pose problems until June and add to complications on the ascent.

Climbers would be well advised to plan accordingly and be aware of the trail conditions, as there is little warning or advisement at the trailhead.

Directions to Hike
US Hwy 26 westbound from Portland towards Seaside. Take Saddle Mountain State park turnoff and follow road to trailhead.
