Description
The trail to North lake has several options. I just hiked it (for the third time) and the most obvious trail led through the steep switchbacks. Then about a mile into the hike there was a descent before going back up. My previous two visits had no descent whatsoever. And at trails end it was vastly different. I couldn\'t see Mt. Baker or Ranier. I did see Glacier Peak, I think.
My memories of this hike were awesome because of the view of not only North Lake, but of the miles of mountains and mountaintops.
I think it's very important that you stay on the ridge as long as possible to get the best view. I recommend a GPS and a good map if you can.

Directions to Hike
From Granite Falls take the Mountain Loop HWY toward Verlot. Forest service road is about 20-25 miles past Verlot Ranger Station (Coal Lake Rd #4060) is the road to the trail head. Gravel road is about 5 miles to the trailhead.
