Description
This hike is 7 miles in and you would come out the same trail. It is all up. Starts at ~6300' and follows the West Fork of Blackwater Creek. If you need to replenish water, do so with a filter/purifier. You will find a number of old outfitter camping spots and fire rings at ~8500', along with plenty of water. The last couple of miles is loaded with switch backs so you will need to be in shape. From here, one can day hike up and over Sheep Mesa where you will see the 'Natural Bridge' aka 'The Hawks Head". It is called this because the natural hole in the mountain is shaped like the silhouette of a Hawks Head. The climb to the top of Sheep Mesa is another 1-1/2 miles and a gain of 2000' to 10,500'. The views are spectacular to say the least. I was there In mid July and we saw some Bighorn Sheep, Golden Eagles and Deer.

Directions to Hike
Go approximately 35 miles West of Cody, WY into the Shoshone National Forest. Turn left at Blackwater Lodge. Drive behind the lodge down the two-track road for two miles. The road ends at the creek. The trail begins here.
