Pining for a Porkin?!
?er, I mean Pining for the PORKIES! Anyone been up to the Porkies in Michigan? How crowded? How rough? How buggy? I was looking at the topo today for the area and it looks like a great place.

RE: Pining for a Porkin?!
Nigal, Those are my stomping grounds! The bugs aren't bad this time of year and the crowds have died down. Late September will be peak color and is most beautiful in the Fall. For the most part, it's not too tough. Depending on which trails you take, there are river crossings, steep hills and there are black bears. If you come up this way, you must let me know! I'd love to hike with you. It's only 1 1/2 hours South of me.

Nigal I thought you were a vegetarian...Pork aint a vegetable man!

The movie Porkies was okay but I liked American Pie better,it was like Porkies with sensibilities.

Nigal -

I've been up to the Porkies several times. They offer great scenery with challenging hiking.

I've heard there may be a few brave black bears; you may want to check on where they are as you plan your trip.

I have a trip review on the following link:

RE: Pining for a Porkin?!
Nigal - I hiked the Porkies last year. I absolutely loved it.

Snacks is correct, the black bear are NOT shy at all. We had one in our camp on night two. We ran into people who had camped at other backcountry sites and had bears hanging around as well. There are bear poles at most campsites.

Little Carp River Trail, west, to Superior Trail is a fun hike! Nice camping at the junction as well.

The bear joined us at Mirror Lake. Nice camping there, as well.

I was lucky enuff to do a day there this summer while visiting Sunshine. Sunny had a scheduling conflict, and was unable to do an overniter. I'd love to get back for a good, long hike.

Hey Nige, See if your library can get ya a copy of Jim DuFresne's "Michigan's Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park" it's a great book that covers all you'd need to know to plan a trip there. Hyper and I have a copy. If ya want we could even mail it to you so you can check it out. This dude is Michigan's backpacking guru. He's also got books about Isle Royale, hiking in lower Mi. etc.

Wal-mart used to have these microwave pork rinds that were totally kick arse. They stopped carrying them down here in my area a few months ago. Bummer.

Yuck >:^P
Funny, on NPR yesterday afternoon they had a piece on pork rinds.

They were talkin' to a guy who runs a pork rind operation in Ohio.

It seems that pork rinds are goin' uptown, what with the Adkins Diet and such......no cholesterol.

I, uh, don't want to be rude, but there are a few threads to-day that make me feel happy (and relieved) to be a Canuck. Now I'm outta here before the flames arrive.
