Non-physical things better than sex:

1. Life changing spiritual experience.
2. Helping someone else have a life changing spiritual experience.
3. Watching your son's Eagle Scout Court of Honor (or do anything successfully).
4. Getting recognized by your peers for something major.”

“Hey Biz, thanks for the personal invite to comment, but I find myself somewhat ambivalent toward the topic. As several have noted, the nature of sex may defy comparisons to other parts of the human experience.

Even coming to agreement on what constitutes sex (ugh, I sound like Bill C.) is problematical. Joy's beach scene may be exquisite foreplay. A sensual relationship with another person could involve quite extended behaviors that may culminate in the "act," but though they are not transparently "sexual," they are part and parcel of the event. The journey is the destination, to get aphoristic (as opposed to aphrodisiastic).

Many comments here fall into the personal value realm...what is important to a person, physical fulfillment, spiritual fulfillment, intellectual fulfillment. In just one narrow aspect of the latter, I have read passages of literature that have left me variously stunned, warm and dreamy, chilled, ecstatic, etc. There have been moments when I have felt so in tune with the natural world that it leaves me nearly in shock from the magnitude of sensation. And I have held my newborn daughter in my arms and trembled so deeply inside that it still reverberates 16 years later.

But I fear that attempting to reconcile one realm, sex, to the others may diminish them all.”

Biz's light-hearted question borne out of boredom at work was probably not intended for the younger audience (she can speak for herself, but I am assuming that until she corrects me). Needless to say, if a 16 year old was sitting in my living room, this topic would not come up--or last very long if it did.

Keep in mind that the moral and emotional aspects of sex are not being discussed here by this mostly adult audience. It is probably an underlying assumption among most of us adults that we have each worked out the moral aspects and matured enough to handle the emotional aspects of sex also...so we glibbly talk about the physical aspects..

That being said, please go back and read Pekka's and Joy's comments for some perspective. This thread may lead the adolescent mind to some unrealistic expectations about sex.

I don't know what your personal or religious beliefs are, but since you are a teenager, I encourage you to seriously consider the positive aspects a married, monogomous relationship and developing an intimacy that can grow into something really special. IMHO, casual sex comes with extra cautions and considerations.”
