I just tore my little toenail off

“I had my left big toe stepped on a few years back. It cracked the nail off and caused the new nail to grow under the existing nail. It ingrew on all three sides. I had to have it operated on three times and it still is messed up. Let me tell you that toenail surgery is not the best surgery in the world, especially after the third time.”

That last one I had finally grew out okay, but it did take a solid year.


It's something about tying your boots up with separate pieces of bootlacing, so you can vary where they're tight or more loose.

You can tie the lower part more loosely and crank down on the ankle, for example. Or even tie off the upper and lower sections over your feet separately. Your boots might look like macramé before it's overwith, but it's supposed to save your toenails! (and maybe some blisters, too)

“Have you had the fun of blisters forming under your toenails?

I've been on a couple of knarly downhills the last 15 years.
You get to the bottom, and within 24 hours you notice that not only are your toes giving you excruciating pain, the nail seems to be lifted off it's bed.

And it IS!

When you get a blister under a nail, you have to pop the blister, then tape down the nail. If you don't tape the nail down, it floats above the nail bed, and is attached only on the outer margins of the nail. It hurts like a sombitch!

I usually lose at least two toenails a season; last year I lost five.

It generally takes at least six months for a new nail to grow all the way back in.
In the meantime, the toe is ugly as sin.

ALWAYS TIE YOUR BOOTS.. I was on a group hike once and walking from the car to the TH I thought I would just neglect this small detail..

Tripped & landed Right on my face (those little hooky things on one foot, caught on the untied shoelace on the other foot), broke my glasses on my face and gave myself a black eye! What a way to start a 5 day trip

Sorry to hear about your toe, Lizbee. I lost two from my Pico Duarte expedition last month - the big one and its neighbor on my right foot. I also had a blackish "rainbow" nail on the left foot, but that seems to be fading...ouchie!

“Sometimes I lose my little toenails from getting blisters under them. I make sure I put nail clippers in my first aid kit to clip the nail short, break the blister, and relieve the pressure. I wish they wouldn't grow back.

Right now I only have 3/4 of one of my big toe nails as a result of jamming my toes coming down the last couple of trails. No blisters, the nail just raised off the bed.

My boots have locking hooks, but sometimes when I'm day hiking I'm not as careful about lacing them as when I'm backpacking. I just got this site from alpinezone.com:
