I just tore my little toenail off

“Not my little toenail but my big one. I got an infection under it and it got pretty bad before I went to the doctor. He said it would have to come off but he couldn't give me a needle because the toe was in such bad shape. The *#%!$& said it would only hurt a little. Holy *#%$&! Why couldn't he tell me it was gonna hurt more than I could imagine? Then at least I would have been ready. I nearly passed out. *#%!$&”

Last Saturday I had on my hiking boots and went to get the mail, for some unknown reason, I jogged. I had no socks on and my boots were unlaced at least halfway down.

So I was doing this weird shuffle thing enabling me to keep them on my feet.........UNTIL.........!!

My right big toenail somehow hooked on the top lining of the boot and then bent backwards!! You know, it's happened to your fingernails. Well, it felt weird and ripped pretty deep into my toenail. But I don't think we're looking at total toenail loss in this instance.

Anyhoo, the other night I was pushing a cart in Wal-Mart and somehow managed to run the little toenail(s) into the cart wheel and perhaps bent it(them) backwards a bit.

EEEEEEEYOUCH!! Instant pain from hell. Since that time the toe is better. I trimmed the nail(s) BUT I see it (they) are are all purple.

Could mean a loss..... or should I just work on pulling it (them) off??!!?

The next morning I woke up and my right eye was all puffy underneath. (No, I wasn't in any bar fight, although bitpusher, currahee, spewgirl and Phil might wonder... LOL)

I wondered if perhaps it was a case where the pain manifested itself elsewhere in the body?

I just tore off the 1/8th inch of toenail that was left on my right foot, the second toe. See, my second toe is longer than my big toe. (Yes I'm one of THOSE!!)

On the 14-mile day on Cumberland Island at Thanksgiving, I knew the toe was hitting the end of my boots, the first time I'd ever had that problem with them or any boots.

It wasn't bad at all, but I knew it was definitely a slight bother. So I figured I'd keep an eye on it.

It never got black. But I noticed about 2 weeks ago it seemed loosened halfway down. So I clipped it down to that point.

Then tonight I saw it was turning white. I could put the nail file way up under it. Managed to pull one side loose and easily pulled away. (OK, so the other side had to be torn off and did bleed.)

Wow, I have no toenail there now!! How does one care for NO toenail??

“When I took up backpacking 10 years ago I started a new athletic lifestyle in response to my body getting old. One part of the body changes was my feet getting about a whole size longer as I started walking and running regularly. I'd invested $200 in some fine Vasque Superhikers but my toes were to the end of them after about a year. One particular trip I brought thinner socks than I normally wore, and hiked 18 miles one day, most of that with a pack on. My toes were trashed! I can't remember how many nails I lost after that trip, but both of the little ones came completely off. I kind of hoped they would never grow back but they did. Had to give away the Superhikers after that.

Put a thick layer of polish on the ugly ones, maybe paint a fake one on that one toe....”
