Gem - I usually get up before most others, also. But I'm not really into the whole buttkicker thang. Rather do a peak or two from a base camp, then climb over it with full gear just so I can say I did. ;)

If I do the 'dacks it would be late August, I think.”

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has designated Saturday as World Rabies Day, but for the Stanton family of rural western Maryland, commemorative events are wholly unnecessary.

The Stantons' Aug. 29 encounter with a rabid bear, the first to test positive for the disease in Maryland, left them feeling lucky they weren't outside the evening of the bear rampage.

Nephew James Winebrenner III, 15, first noticed the animal about 7 p.m. The bear had emerged from the thick woods surrounding the Stanton property near Grantsville, in Garrett County, and was scaling an eight-foot-high chain-link fence to get at two pygmy goats, which are family pets.

"We had the screen door opened," said Charlotte Stanton, 39, a homemaker. "We all started yelling to scare the bear."

Vernon, N.J. - A brawny thief smashed through a minivan’s window yesterday, took the vehicle on a short ride and dumped it on the side of the road before fleeing on foot into the woods, township police said.
Police have described the suspect as a black bear.
About 2 a.m., Patrolman David Dehardt noticed the 2004 Mazda minivan parked on the side of the road in the Highland Lakes section of the township.
Dehardt investigated and took detailed notes to describe the crime scene: paw marks on the windshield, bear drool on the cloth interior, claw marks on torn-off door panels, black hair on the seats and countless candy wrappers in and out of the minivan.

“Wyoming Fish & Game has their hands full. Prevailing theory around here is the truck took off. You can see in comparing stills that the wheels definitely move forward and likely dumped the guy off the back.

You don't see what happened to the bear but my guess is, dead.

“it actually does look like the bear is lunging away from the big tin can as the ranger is falling down -the wound on his leg looks like a claw scratch that might have been received in the midst of said lunge. I bet the bear ran like hell outta there - think how much noise that made!”

Apparently, the bear found out that charging the Rangers was not as safe as mauling a young boy.”

“There were two bear attacks in a subdivision east of Vancouver, BC last week. In both cases the bear had to be killed.

The first attack was on a woman in her back yard. It was chased off by passersby, but had to be killed when it refused to leave the area.
