Shortly after the bear bought a $250,000 life insurance policy, Mr. Pala learned the Insurance company had a claim before he could even deposit the premium check.

Given the proximity to Gatlinburg, I'm assuming this is a dumpster diving bear.

When I first heard about it I had to look up the location since I had the kids backpacking in the Smokies just a couple of weekends ago.

It was up the Rainbow Falls Trail, but if he was just a "few minutes" from the car, it had to be pretty darn close to Gatlinburg.

The guy who played Ned Ryerson in "Groundhog Day" also played the commissioner in "Deadwood." He's been in a lot of films, but those two are just about his most notable roles.

I feel better w/ my 6 yr old boy on one of them retractable dog leashes. But it's really more for slipping from steeper trails.

I did see that most of TN's bear hunting permits are filed for kills in Gatlinburg, INSIDE the city limits of Gatlinburg. And I saw too that TN's state record, which was a huge'un was killed inside Galtinburg too.

On the front page of Section F (Outdoor/Travel) section of today's Knoxville News Sentinel, there was an excellent article on the full time ridge runner in the GSMNP, Jim Mowbray. Retired Navy, weapons officer during Vietnam flying in A6 Attack jets.

Well written and very informative. Seems like a great guy to have in the park.

But, in the article he was talking about rogue bear activity this year and he was bluff charged at Spence a couple weeks ago. Nothing new there. That area has high activity every year.

What caught my eye was what he said happened at Mt Collins this month. He said a bear spent most of the night trying to rip the tin off the roof to get into the shelter and everyone had to stay up all night taking turns poking it with hiking poles and making noise.

Anyone hear anything about this? I am assuming from the article that the fence is still up there. I know that people trash that shelter and I rarely go there. The short walkin promotes a party atmosphere and I have been there when people brought in Pizza before. Pretty spooky thought of a bear working all night to get into the damn thing.

Sounds like Smokey is way overdue for a ride out to the middle of nowhere (at the very least).

Didn't see any bears while we were out there this weekend, but we did find a really cute little fox on Jakes Creek Trail. Laurel also found the yellowjackets at the Avent cabin. HPM slapped wet mud on the stings and they were completely gone in about 45 minutes.

I could definitely smell bear at several areas though. Yikes. I think many of the people down in the towns are much scarier than bears though. And they breed...

Chilli, I had heard about that while hiking in SNP. I think it was the ridgerunner up there that told me about the bear trying to rip the roof off.

Yep, saw that news article on t.v. I think the guy must`ve whacked the bear on the snout a few times....that would be the place with less flesh/fat/fur to protect it. In any case he was lucky......

On opening day of bear season, celebrated in Bob's garage we're having stew - bear, caribou and moose (maybe some deer if anyone gets one that morning).
