Problem is, it's a 24/7 thing. I'm taking care of my 88 year old mother, too. She's there all day. The whole house gets heated at once because there's only one thermostat. It's a tough situation. Not much room for leeway here...”

The correct answers were 'oil shock' and 'stagflation' sarge.

Prices on crude have more than doubled in the last 5 years. Thanks for electing representatives of Big Oil.

I still say Bush needs to get on the phone with OPEC countries and tell them to open the spigot.

Wow, with the exception of the college football thread this site can almost be summed up entirely by saying its all Bush's fought. Even in the case that he does convince OPEC to open the spigot sometime in the future we still are going to be faced with the same situation and in the direction we continue to go with demand the circumstances will have a more significant adverse effect. In addition, if you consider yourself a greeny you must be quiet relieved and excited. Maybe I'm the only one on here that agrees with Sarge when he says stop complaining because frankly I just don't see the logical argument by many besides trying to camoflage behind your typical political rants. Yeah, gas prices suck!

CBS News has a crew going cross country checking out gas prices and they stopped at Elkhart, IN. yesterday to see how RV sales were doing. Sales are still booming for big RV's. I guess if you have $100,000 to spend on an RV the price of gas doesn't matter.

trailhound57 - Do you agree then that Dubya was just a whining little baby when he said on Jan 26, 2000, during the GOP debate?:

"What I think the president ought to do is get on the phone with the OPEC cartel and say we expect you to open your spigots. One reason why the price is so high is because the price of crude oil has been driven up. OPEC has gotten its supply act together and it’s driving the price, like it did in the past. And the president must jawbone OPEC members to lower the price. And if in fact there is collusion amongst big oil, he ought to intercede there as well."

Funny how Bush could see a conspiracy by Big Oil then to limit production and drive up prices (when they were half as much as today) but now that your man is in charge, you guys just want to bend over for it.

I never said my man was in charge nor would I say he was whining. I certainly didn't give him much clout for his comments then. However, the issue still remains as demand rises the cost must and should also rise. We are still not at price that will cut the demand. My only suggestion is that Bush could possibly do more to encourage other alternatives. However, I do not put the responsibility of the world on any president's shoulders. In the long run this country is still facing down the barrel of gun when concerning fuel if we continue to be dependant. A country of freedom should not be held hostage because of dependencies. The U.S. being weaned from such dependencies will be much more successful now and later.

Heck no, you're twisting my logic here. The quicker we become independent the more it helps us and more it hurts them. The big picture is that the price will continue rise no matter what is done until we kill the demand. So how do you most easily kill the demand with the least consequences. High price. We can put a bandaid on it but sooner or later this country will have to deal with the issue. Thus far every generation has hoped there would be some type of alternative fuel so the issue continues to be passed along. We can complain about the price being high but high is a relative term. High and overpriced are not the same.

NBC news sent a crew to England and the gas prices there are $6.50 per gallon. People over there were jealous to hear of U.S. prices. There is a $14 fee for anyone parking a car in London to discourage driving into the city. People cope by using public transportation mostly and by driving small cars. They also said many people walk or bicycle to work. Arriving sweaty to work in a business suit is a common thing over there.

They showed one interesting car people drive called a Smart car. It's a 2 seat car, 7 feet long with an 800cc engine and gets 60 mpg. It sounds like a better choice than a motorcycle with similar mpg. I'll bet we'll see them here if gas prices keep rising.

Serious question:

Why are so many liberals on here complaining?

Don't you want higher gas prices to decrease usage of fossil fuels? Isn't that what you've been screaming about for 40 years now? Don't you want consumers to demand more fuel efficient vehicles?

You should be rejoicing. I honestly don't think you know how. Especially you socialist libbies. You're the worst of the bunch.

I think commuters and motorists will adjust to higher prices and will have to. One group I feel bad for is the farmers. They showed on the news how much extra it is costing them to plant and harvest and the prices they get are set by commodity market forces. They just can't pass on the costs. The one guy didn't have a vacation in 19 years. Maybe it might not have much effect on Amish farmers, but on traditional farms it will.

The Foundation for Taxpayer and Consumer Rights has released internal memos that prove the major oil companies have conspired for years to reduce domestic refining capacity to drive up prices. I had a feeling that this was going on, but here is the proof. http://www.consumerwatchdog.org/energy/fs/

Senate Fights Back Windfall Tax on Oil Companies Thursday, November 17, 2005
(off Foxnews)

WASHINGTON — Senate Republicans beat back Democratic attempts Thursday to use a $60 billion tax bill to pinch oil and energy companies that have been reporting record profits while consumers pay high gasoline prices.

The bill, which would prevent a number of individual and business tax breaks from expiring, already levies almost $5 billion in taxes on major oil companies.

The energy amendments faced opposition from the Republican majority and stood little chance of success, but they reflected attentiveness on Capitol Hill to high gasoline prices and fears of skyrocketing home heating costs this winter.

Some GOP senators were already unhappy with tax writers because the bill included a change in accounting methods that would hit large integrated oil companies with $4.9 billion in taxes. Sen. Larry Craig, R-Idaho, said he would vote against the bill if that tax increase remained intact.

"Is it a windfall tax by another name?" Craig said.

Lawmakers were alarmed this fall when profit reports showed five major companies and their global parent corporations earned more than $32.8 billion in the July to September quarter.

Consumers saw gasoline prices soar beyond $3 a gallon in the aftermath of supply disruptions caused by hurricanes, and the politicians called oil executives to Capitol Hill to explain their huge profits.

Democratic Sens. Byron Dorgan of North Dakota and Chris Dodd of Connecticut lost a bid to impose a temporary windfall profits tax of 50 percent on the sale of oil over $40 a barrel, applied to profits not reinvested in increasing domestic oil and gas supplies. They would have returned the money to energy consumers through an income tax rebate. A 35-64 procedural vote defeated their effort.

"The major integrated oil companies have all of the gain. Who has all the pain?" Dorgan asked before answering his own question: "All the American people who are trying to pay for the price of a tankful of gas or trying to figure out how they are going to heat their home in the winter."

Opponents said oil companies shouldn't be punished when lawmakers are urging them to invest in energy production. They're being made political targets, even though they aren't reporting profits as high as other industries, said Senate Finance Committee Chairman Charles Grassley, R-Iowa.

"If you have excess profits tax on Big Oil, do you soon have one on Big Microsoft?" Grassley said.

A similar amendment sought to impose a temporary windfall profits tax on oil companies and use the money to fund a low-income heating assistance program.

The Senate defeated proposals that would have eliminated a tax incentive for major oil and gas companies that allows them a credit for exploration and development cost, and would have banned price gouging during national energy emergencies declared by the president.

The overall bill would cut taxes $60 billion over five years, preserving many tax breaks scheduled to expire unless lawmakers keep them intact. Unlike a version passed by a House committee, the bill would not extend reduced tax rates for capital gains and dividends. Senate GOP leaders vowed to make sure the 15 percent tax rate for investment income will be in the final version of the bill.

The bill would hold back the alternative minimum tax, which will reach into the pockets of millions more taxpayers next year unless Congress prevents inflation from pushing the tax into the middle class. Lawmakers instituted the tax to prevent the wealthy from avoiding all taxation.

The bill also would offer $7 billion in assistance to businesses and individuals hit by Hurricane Katrina and other storms, filling in details of President Bush's proposed Gulf Opportunity Zone.

Other provisions would extend a deduction for state and local sales taxes, investment incentives for small businesses, a business research and development credit and a tuition deduction. Taxpayers would get new incentives to make charitable contributions, at the same time as tax-writers put new curbs on breaks for charity that they've deemed abusive.

Kinda funny how the oil companies were claiming they were only victims of the tight market and couldn't possibly do anything about prices. Once they had their asses hauled before Congress, prices fell steadily.

I guess it's all coincidence.

Ok, so I did it. It climbed pretty much steadily for the year, then settled back (still above what it was) for a period of no more than a month. I don't see what your point is except that a nice "killing" was made in the interim. Let's see what the next "crisis" is that we can blame inflated prices on...

Oil prices climb after Al-Qaeda call for attacks on oil facilities 2 hours, 27 minutes ago (Off Yahoo News)

LONDON (AFP) - Oil prices rose, holding above 60 dollars per barrel in New York after Al-Qaeda's number two Ayman al-Zawahiri appeared to call for attacks on oil installations in the Middle East.

New York's main contract, light sweet crude for delivery in January, added 45 cents to 60.39 dollars per barrel in electronic dealing on Wednesday.

In London, the price of Brent North Sea crude for January delivery gained 55 cents to 58.16 dollars per barrel.

"This morning (on Thursday) light crude futures were higher after a top Al-Qaeda official urged attacks on oil sites in the Middle East," analysts at the Sucden brokerage firm said.

"In a video, Al-Qaeda's deputy leader Ayman al-Zawahri called on mujahideen to concentrate their attacks on Muslims' 'stolen' oil."

However, Al-Jazeera television said a videotape it aired Wednesday, showing al-Zawahiri claiming that his leader Osama bin Laden was still alive, dated back to September.

Zawahiri was quoted by Al-Jazeera as calling for attacks on oil installations in Muslim nations "because most of the revenues of this oil go to the enemies of Islam".

Middle Eastern nations produce some 30 percent of total global crude output.

OPEC kingpin Saudi Arabia is the world's biggest producer with some 9.5 million barrels of crude per day.

"We got the videotape in September, and back then we aired what we thought were the important parts," Al-Jazeera editor-in-chief Ahmad Sheikh told AFP.

"There was a misunderstanding today, and we aired these extracts today by mistake."

Traders were also looking ahead to Wednesday's release of weekly oil inventory figures from the US Department of Energy.

Prices remained under pressure following weekend snow and forecasts of colder weather in the energy-hungry US northeast, putting crucial heating fuel supplies in the spotlight once again.

Distillates, used for diesel and heating oils, are forecast to rise by 1.7 million barrels.

Market expectations are for a 900,000-barrel drop in crude stockpiles and a 1.4-million-barrel jump in gasoline (petrol).

Weather forecasters have "extended the period of expected cold temperatures (in the US) and usage of heating oil", said Hong Kong-based oil strategist Dariusz Kowalczyk
