If you believe all Palestinians hate America and were dancing in the streets yesterday, you are a victim of typical sloppy TV reporting by most networks. My wife specifically called my attention to a report from one channel that MOST Palestinians were staying off the street and were in shock about the attacks, fearing that it will result in severe damage to their cause. Do not fall prey to propaganda from any side in this. None of us has a fully-formed understanding of how the Palestinian people are feeling right now.

However, we can pay very close attention to how various peoples and governments act in the wake of this attack. Calmly sitting back and assessing their statements and actions will soon reveal who is on our side and who isn't. It will be a demanding task to make such an assessment and cool heads will be needed.

If anything, this discussion brings forth the need to stop the current social obsession of identifying ourselves and others in this nation as "(_________) - Americans." What we need to resolve within ourselves is what it means to be an American (accepting and living by the ideals America represents) and how we can jetison this dual identity mumbo jumbo. At least naturalized citizens have to swear to foresake other allegiances. Those of us born here rarely are asked to make an overt commitment to the key concepts that make the USA what it is.

Those who cannot fully embrace the American ideal will self-identify through their talk and their action, and you should not be surprised that they will not all be recent immigrants, nor of any particular race or religion.

Staying true to our values (all of them, not just the convenient ones) will ultimately give us the strength and will to address our foes, if not swiftly, then surely. It may not be pleasant at times, but we can do this without bringing shame upon ourselves and without becoming the very thing our enemies accuse us of being.”

I knew many of you wouldn't understand, and I don't care quite frankly. Anybody who knows me, knows that I'm not a racist, or any of the things I've been called. This thread was opened to promote discussion on ideas. Ideas of new ways to fight a war that is unfamiliar to us, and ways to actually win the war. I don't think I have read too many ideas being posted here, just personal attacks on me. This country is supposedly united now. Judging by what is going on here in TT right now, it couldn't be more torn apart.

When we bomb Afghanistan, Pakistan and Iraq, and we will. Many of you will protest. When we cancell student visas for people in this country who are from nations that harbor terrorists, many of you will protest. When another arab or muslim american claps at the sight of our countrymen being blown to bits, and somebody like me has the balls to knock their teeth out, many of you will protest. When women and children die as a result of this war, many of you will protest. It will be your right to protest, just know we can't win unless all of the above happens.”
