“I would have to agree. I remember an article on the best back packs a few years back & they said the TNF pack was a contender. We all know that TNF made great gear but they did not & still don?t make quality packs.”

“Not to sound redundant, I too, lost interest in the mag. long ago. I still splurge for the Gear Guide every year but for the most part I read it in front of the mag rack.

I just wish the mag. paper was softer and stronger better fit for "trail" usage. All that gloss makes it to slippery.”

Seriously?.. before I found thebackpacker.com, I thought they were a really good site. I have come to find that although I still have several good friends there, and still email back and forth and post to the website.. it PALES in comparison to the wealth of knowledge given here.

I think part of it is that it is a 'commercial' attempt at making hiking attainable for the average office yuppie who wants to buy their north face matching stuff and go be a part of a truly great sport.

Does it suck? No. It's just meant for a totally different audience. I mean geez.. It wuld be like comparing Playboy and Hustler.”

“Hey - the magazine is good for advice on equipment..Their tests could save you money.There going from their experince not the manufacturer...that should say something.I appreciate their food articles...even used some my self.I wouldn`t mind a little more Canadian content ,but then again it is a American magazine.I also wouldn`t mind some reviews on middle line gear,not every one can afford NorthFace or Serria Designs..at least not up here.Be thankful you got a descent mag that covers the hobby you love.”

“Radagast-- I go to the dentist and get those cotton tubes put in my mouth that they use for dental sugery.
I find it considerably keeps my magazine dryer.I just book a week in advance to the gear guide coming out.My dentist is great about it...even if he does hike with his dog and pet gerbil wilbur.”

The statement says if I renew that I get a Free Gift...A Guide To Backpacking Trails Across North America. Whoooooopieeee! I know I'll never hike the great majority of the trails in the guide cause they're in states I'll prolly never get to. Practiclly useless...to me, YES...cause I ALREADY have the guide from a previous subscription renewal.

I could use a Food Guide...if'n I had a choice! (But I still dig the mag.)”

“I see that they are going to take a look at the Target/Eddie Bauer line of gear, so they may be catching on about more moderately priced items. This month they look at less expensive boots, too.

I just worry about them overloading certain trails, though in the current issue's listing of each state's best trails, they didn't list anything for Michigan or Wisconsin that wasn't very obvious and already getting significant usage.”
