Re-use of the World Trade Center Site

“Even as heroic rescue efforts are under way and countless tons of rubble remain to be cleared, New York City officials have vowed to rebuild the World Trade Center towers.

My first thought was there is no way anyone would want to lease space or work there again. Perhaps a memorial and/or museum would be most appropriate on this important, publicly owned land.

Then I realized that we have to be brave and defy those who would try to make us fear. I have come up with a design for a new building, one that would be taller and more magnificent than what was destroyed and would send a message to terrorists in a most ?New York? way. My submission is pictured below:

“Good "point", Violin. But I would like to see another city park there. Most people will not want to work there again, although some people survived both the bombing and this crash, meaning some people didn't leave after the first attack.”

What will they do with all the debris that contains massive amounts of dead people? A memorial would be nice, but let's face it, this is prime New York land, so who can say at this time what will happen.

I believe the bldg was as strong as it needed to be. This was a most unusual circumstance that brought it down.”

“New York is a rat's nest. Mayor Rudy - the BIG RAT. It wasn't long ago he was cracking jokes at Seattle for cancelling the Y2K celebration because of a terrorist threat which was thwarted. (BTW, also sponsored by Bin Laden) How funny is terrorism now, Mayor Rudy?”

“We should let the site return to its natural state. We could limit access so as not to disturb the growth of indigenous plants that we would put back there. If any of the human species want to go there they'll have to apply for a permit, which won't cost any money, it would just be another opportunity to grow the federal beaurocracy. Then if you got a permit you would be assigned a designated travel route, so as to minimize the impact of your non-indigenous and unnatural human self on the land. No camp fires, of course, tents would be pitched on designated bare slabs of decaying concrete. In fact it would be a great idea to make everyone take a course in LNT ethics, at their own expense. No parking at the trailhead, to minimize the risk of crime and reduce scaring the indigenous fawna to be re-introduced. Then large predators could be placed there to balance out the the rodent population and further discourage human scum from spending their time imposing on the natural wildness of the area. But we'll all feel so much better just because that piece of natural wilderness exists and we made it happen. Then when it was wild enough we could re-introduce native americans, since europeans basically ripped them off in the deal to buy Manhatten.

That's all I can think of right now. I need to learn a few more P.C. platitudes before I'll be ready to submit articles to outdoor sports magazines.”

“Definitely rebuild. I think that people will be ready to work there again by the time the new buildings could be completed. They should build new twin towers taller than the ones in Indonesia, but they should look distinctly different from the original WTC towers.”

“I saw where a group of artists came up with an idea to use spotlights, perhaps on barges, to create 'ghost' images of the WTC the fill the blank spot in the NYC skyline. I think it's a great idea as it could be done almost immediately and could be left indefinitely as a memorial, even after the site is redeveloped (if it ever is).”
