Candle Lanterns

“I have thought about using one. Any advice, or experience?”

“I just use a maglite soltair for tent illumination. Wouldn't mind replacing it with one of the keyring sized LEDs though.”

“I don't take one backpacking anymore (too heavy), but they're great for car camping. I've got four.”

“Candle lanterns are great for winter camping or for camping in the rain. It helps lower the humidity in the tent, bring the inside temp up a few degrees, and can even help dry out wet clothing a little. Of course the light isn't bad to read by as well.”

“I'm with GS for all the reasons mentioned. I normally only take one when backpacking in the winter.”

“GS, lower tent humidity? It might be worth a try then. During my Hoover wilderness trip I had trouble with damp clothes not drying out overnight.”

“I love my candle lantern. I do agree with Tilt, though. I don't think I'd take it into the backcountry, but I know I'd be wishing I had it!”

“I absolutely agree with gear slut for all the same reasons. As an avid winter camper I consider my candle lantern (Northern Lights) a neccesity. I wouldn't consider snow camping w/o it.”

“I gave up my candle oil lamp for the new Coleman Exponent lantern, it burns the fuel from coleman powere max fuel cartridges, burns hot, 10 candlepower light output, 13 Ozs fueled, and is just larger than the UCO candle Lantern it replaces. Only for cool/cold /wet weather, due to the weight, but extremely reliable, and a GREAT source of heat as well as light. The built in reflector alows you to use it to read without blinding you at the same time...
