Evolution
Have we really evolved as a species?? Or are we no better than ancient barbaric civilizations?

On a related note: if we truly are evolving, why aren't we all Ultra Light Backpackers?

If we had truly evolved as a species we wouldn't need chapstick.

If we truly evolved as a species, we wouldn't need lips either, but my gosh.

RE: Evolution
If we didn't wear clothes I'd sure hope we still had lips (and chapstic).

RE: Evolution
Wouldn't it be nice if we all had luxurious fur coats? Hell for folks with allergies though.

You're right TownDawg, I cange 'em periodically.

Devolution!!

RE: Evolution
I'm with Mr.Tilt...it's DEVOlution. Are we not men? We are DEVO!

Charles Darwin hesitated to use the word "evolution" because it connotates changing to a higher state, which in reality is NOT what actually happens. He used the phrase "dissent with modification" because many species change but not for the better.

In geologic history, many species have actually died because their "dissent with modifications" left them less able to cope with their surroundings.

Our own genepool has been devoluting since modern medicine has "helped" us to survive all/most/some ailments. Once, loooong ago, only the strong survived, and those born with impairments died or died soon after birth and never procreated. Now we have people with all sorts of medical complications passing on their genes to their siblings, and so on, and so on.

Enough already...don't get me started!

RE: Evolution
We have evolved in that we have found more sophisticated ways of killing each other

and as Buddur pointed out, we keep finding new and sophisticated ways to preserve the 'weak'.

we are killing ourselves off!

"It is not the strongest of the species that survive, nor the most intelligent, but the
one most responsive to change."

RE: Evolution
"Descent with modification."

It isn't even a question of being responsive to change it is a question of fitting in with the particular change that occurs.

RE: Evolution
Did I misspel a wurd?

So true, Mr.Ped. When species become extinction, it's usually because they fail to adapt rapidly enough to changing conditions of climate or competition.

Bracketed phrase is from a "The Death Merchant" novel.
