WOW... step around it and enjoy the woods... for all you know the dogs ran behind the people and #&%!$ without them knowing... $hit happens...

You're in the great outdoors for cripes sake... I'm shocked dog $hit could piss someone off like that, I personally take a little bit longer step and continue to enjoy the woods

Sonja and I dodged horse poop
all along our hike in Rocky. It was no big deal...and horse poop is not as big as dog poop. If you don't like dogs, there is something inherently wrong with you...maybe is has something to do with not being loved as a child.

seek medical help or ask prowler for some meds.

Poop is a natural thing...squirrels do it, deer do it, ants do it...what's the big deal...like ION said...step around it, over it or even in it...boots are pretty much self cleaning. I walk through ankle deep mud pits on the trail...its just as messy as poop, who cares...wash it off in a puddle or do the twist in the dirt...it'll come off long before hitting camp.

cripes...what a bunch of babies

I say pick up all the poo you see along the trail. Then when you make camp at night you can build a poop castle.

I've stepped in more dog crap in the city than in the outdoors, and there are all kinds of laws on the books requiring people to keep their dogs on leashes and clean up after them in the city.

I've only had one problem with a dog on the trail. It was left off the leash and tried to bite my leg off. Had to use pepper spray. The owner yelled something at me, so I offered to spray him as well. He11, the owner should have been the one to get sprayed rather than the dog because he was the one who could have prevented the attack, but the dog was the one trying to take a hunk out of my leg!

Most dogs come up and want to sniff and make sure you're not a threat to their owners. Some just want to greet you and get an ear scratched or neck rubbed. There was only that one time, and I can't condemn all dogs because one owner was an idiot.

Really! M Silver's dog Sparky probably had more fun than anybody on the DWG trip last weekend. Didn't bother a soul.

It really depends on the owner and how they treat their dogs.

For 10-12 years my best trail buddy was a 220lb. Malamute. One side of his pack contained 25lbs of dog food, the other side had 25lbs of my gear. With his natural desire to pull, a 10ft lead made uphills a breeze. His fav. spot was the Canada Rockies. He was the most laid back, well behave, silent friend i've ever had..after his passing I've never owned another....

I'll see if I can find some old photo's...to give ya' an idea how big he was....he'd stand on his hind legs and be about 5'10", his paw print was nearly 4" wide. His fav. chew toy was a 70lb Lab!

dog are great protection also...July 25,2002: about 11:30 P.M. I hear a noise outside my tent, looking out I see, in the moonlight, a male, about 20-25y/o going thru gear someone had left out. I racked a round in the 9MM and he broke the record for the 100yd dash....wished I'd had my dog. Now that would have been great entertainment!!

Hee hee, it's times like this, that you wished you had a few firecrackers with you.

How far away were you from the trail? Were you camped at a designated camping spot? That's one reason I don't set up camp at designated spots...I always find my own spot away from the trail or other people.

Can’t keep a good thread down!
As we were coming up to the spring where we were planning on stopping at for lunch this weekend, we saw a large unleashed German Shepherd sitting in the trail and a few guys sitting around watching another filter water. A couple coming the other direction had a black lab and a small mutt.

A fight broke out between the lab and the shepherd. The lab’s owner sort of tried to convince his dogs to follow him but they didn’t want to listen. No one from the first group said anything to the German Shepherd. The fight continued for several minutes until the couple was finally able to get their dogs to move on.

The last thing I hoped for when I walked way out there was having to listen to a dogfight.

Why can’t people who won’t or can’t properly train their animals invest in a leash? Is that too much to ask?

I wonder the same thing. It is NOT too much to ask. It is the least (leashed?) that should be done. If an unleashed dog tore into my leashed dog...all bets are off the dog is getting the shlt kicked out of it.

This is the segue for a merger with the carrying guns on trail thread.

Shoot the unleashed dog that initiates an attack.
I know that this is totally unfair to the dog, who is just being a dog, but the law does not allow shooting the owner of such a dog however richly deserved.

I have - just this morning. It took years of yoga to be able to do so, though.

Get'em nuetered/spayed.
Male dogs seem more curious about Gizmeaux (nuetered) than they are about Belle.

Giz is more "in your face" tho, and mebbe that initiates the curiosity. But it lingers, nonetheless.

My black lab, Claudell, and I mixed it up with a shepard and a pit in the woods one day. They came out of nowhere, but ran to Alabama by the time we got finished with them. That was gooooood times!

Oh Gawd! I just got a flashback of the pit staggering around after I cleaned his clock with my staff. C.W. took on the shepard - a white one - and held his ground quite well, thank you. I was mostly there to keep the fight fair by keeping the pit off The Black Attack. One swing was all it took - the poor bastard seemed like he didn't even know I was there... his focus was on the black dog.

The dogs finally scooted. It was pretty cool the way the blood showed on the white hair of the shepard.

Rain and wind and weather

Wishin' my gal was by my side.
All the things I'm missin',
Good vittles, love, and kissin',

Somehow I feel exhausted after reading just a few posts.

That's right Manuka - both groups are wrong, as dogs do not belong in the backcountry.

LNT = LDH.

And for you dog owners in California and Colorado, I offer this public service announcement:

Pet food recalled after dog deaths

San Francisco-AP -- A Canadian company has issued a pet food recall after several dogs died in California and more than a dozen other animals became sick.

Petcurean Pet Nutrition is recalling all of its Go! Natural pet food products after receiving reports of illnesses in animals that ate their food.

Officials of the Canadian company say they have heard of 14 dogs and cats in California falling ill, with seven of them dying.

Go! Natural is touted in advertising as a top-notch product for dogs and cats that boasts one of the highest meat contents of any pet foods.

A spokesman said the company is looking at one particular batch produced at a new Texas plant that may be responsible for the illnesses.

The product is sold in the San Francisco, San Diego, Sacramento, Seattle and Denver areas.

(Stations: Consumers who have questions abut the recall can call Petcurean toll-free at 866-864-6112, Ext. 104.)

Ha! Dogs are the greatest backcountry companions you could ask for! They do less damage to the backcountry than you or me. And they have every right as another animal under the sun to enjoy meadows, and beaches, and mountain breezes, and swimming in creeks and lakes as we do. My dogs have been to wild places most people only dream of. Dogs ROCK!

Dogs in the woods are cool as long as they are leashed, quiet, friendly, and stay on the trail.

The worst is when you are trying to eat your trail lunch and someone thinks their dog is just so damn cute when its trying to eat your food and does nothing to restrain their beast.

Smart dogs, stupid humans.

How about this for a real dogfight event? Saw a lab try to take on a coyote a few years back. It was no contest - the coyote tore the doggie to shreds.

If you are a real dog lover like me you'll quit trying to live up to that sentimental image of you and your pet froliking in the woods. Pet dogs are too 'soft' to take on wild animals. Do your dog a favor and take him to the local park for a good run (take plenty of doggie doo bags too!).

Hey top dawg! I'd be willing to bet my "pet" dogs could run circles around you in the wilderness, AND have 10 times + less of an impact on the wilderness than you. I take my dogs into the most wild, remote, craziest wilderness in the lower 48, in MT, WY, and ID, for months at a time, in country infested with grizzlies and wolves. I bet they respond better than YOU would to grizzlies and wolves, as we've encountered them many times. My dogs ROCK in the wilderness. They live for it, as do I. Guys like you who want to force which animals can or can't enjoy this great creaton God made for all animals chides my chap. Chaps my chide? I forget how that goes. Maybe YOU should stick to the local park and stay out of the woods, where your boots leave fatty treadmarks in the beaten trail, compared to my dogs soft paws spread over 4 legs, not just two like you (I'm assuming you have two legs, if not, my apologies, really). Do you toss your sleeping bag and/or tent on the ground? Ever build a fire? My dogs don't, very low impact animals. Ever crap in the woods? Did you know humans are the worst spreaders of giardia in the mountains? Your impact in the wilderness as a human is far worse than a dogs. Do dogs habituate animals to food? Do dogs leave fire rings? Do dogs create rutted trails? Do dogs leave cans or bottles or candy wrappers in campsites? Do dogs chop trailblazes in trees? Do dogs hammer signs into trees or posts into the ground? Do dogs set up bright yellow tents? Do dogs create trails? You as a human sure do. Why give the dog a bad rap, check yourself out, dude. My dogs climb class III stuff, they go kayaking with me, they've hiked thousands of miles with me. I bet my dogs enjoy the mountain breeze, and the lakes, and the creeks, and the meadows, and the sounds of the wilderness as much or MORE than you do. If I even mention the words, "wanna go hiking?", they jump up and head for the door. If the tailgate of my pickup is down, they're in there, waiting for the next adventure. And what, you wanna keep them on a 6' leash for a stroll on the sidewalk down to the park, relegated to sniffing fire hydrants? How'd you like to be tied up and not being able to enjoy creation like most other animals? If you think it's doing your dog a "favor" by relegating him/her to the local park, then you don't truly know dogs. Or you don't have a trained dog, which is your fault, not your dog's. And yes, ha ha!, I feel strongly about this issue, because I practically live with my dogs in the wilderness and they are the finest companions a guy can ask for. I trust them with my life, more so than a human, in grizzly country. DOGS LOVE ADVENTURE! Do your dog a favor, take your dog backpacking.
