A dog discovered in a garbage truck moments before it would have been dumped in a landfill had been thrown into the trash by Perth Amboy's animal control officer who believed he had euthanized the animal, an official with the Middlesex County SPCA said yesterday.

"It looks like this was a tragic mistake," said SPCA Sgt. John Amabile.

The 5-year-old dog, a shepherd-lab mix, was discovered Thursday morning by a Perth Amboy worker emptying a truckload of trash at the Edgeboro landfill in East Brunswick.

Ron Barbati, an employee of the Perth Amboy Department of Public Works, said he had dumped most of the 29,440 pounds of trash in the trailer when he walked to the back of the truck to pull out the dozen or so trash bags that had not fallen out.

When he reached in to grab a piece of cardboard, "the dog popped her head up," said Barbati, who was shocked to see the dog next to a large metal blade used to push garbage out of the trailer

"It was amazing. I started screaming, 'There's a dog in my truck!'" said Barbati.

The dog had been brought to the Perth Animal animal shelter by a city woman, whom authorities did not identify. Paul told the woman the dog would have to be put down because there was no room at the shelter, authorities said.

After Paul euthanized the dog, it was thrown into the trash Wednesday and spent the night mixed in with the refuse in Barbati's trailer at the Perth Amboy transfer station. City household waste is deposited at the transfer station, where it is compacted before being loaded onto trucks.

Officials said throwing a euthanized dog into the trash is legal under state law. While some animal shelters have crematoriums, it has been difficult in recent years to build one because of air pollution regulations.

“Pooper snooper finds its targets

AN anti-dog fouling blitz by a "pooper snooper" mobile spy camera has landed several city pet owners with £40 fines.

Council bosses have drafted in the CCTV van to catch people failing to clear up after their pets at parks and walkways across the city.

The move was today hailed a major success, with ten people caught out by the cameras in the first two days.

Five of those were spotted failing to clean up after their dogs and landed with £40 spot fines.

The others were caught litter-ing and landed with the same penalty.

The hi-tech van, in conjunction with the city’s 33 "litter meanies", was used to catch culprits at four known trouble spots - the Cramond-Silverknowes walkway, Dalmeny’s Pocket Park, Saughton Park and Fishwives Causeway in Musselburgh.

After the success of the initial crackdown, the £98,000 unit is now being sent to other areas of the city to catch irresponsible dog owners.

The council’s squad of environmental wardens will this week focus on Gracemount, Sighthill and Currie.

The city’s environment leader, Councillor Bob Cairns, said introducing the pooper snooper was proving a valuable weapon in the battle against dog fouling.

"We are observing that when the public are aware of the presence of the CCTV unit, dog owners in particular are cleaning up after their dog, but when they are unaware then it is clear that a small minority are still allowing their dog to foul public places.

"Without a doubt, the mobile CCTV unit is a valuable tool in preventing anti-social behaviour and we are confident that the public supports the action that we are taking," said Cllr Cairns. And a council spokesman added: "Over the space of two days last week the council’s new mobile CCTV unit caught five individuals in north Edinburgh allowing their dogs to foul a public place while a further five were caught dropping litter.

“So I’m lying in my tent last night and I can hear this dog off in the distance barking it’s head off. The damn thing would not shut up. Then about an hour later from no more than 10’ from my tent this dog starts going ape shlt! It sounded big and mean. It circled the tent some just going bonkers the whole time. The only thing I had was a Victorinox Classic knife. I’d have been just as well off using my lexan spoon! LOL!

I’m going to keep at least one of my trekking poles close to the tent door in the future. One good thing was that I learned a lot about my Golden Retriever Honey. She loves everyone and everything and I’ve always wondered how she’d react if danger was around or I was threatened. She rose to the challenge! She stood straight up and let out the most fearsome growl I’ve ever heard. She wanted out of that tent something bad and she was ready to BRING IT! She slept the rest of the night as close to the door as she could get. Nice to know how she’ll react.

The dog’s a$$hole owner came up the trail a bit and called for the dog. I think someone was running their coon dogs because that’s kind of what the dog sounded like.”
