I see what everyone is saying, and like I said problem is irresponsible people ruining it for the rest of it. Personaly I dont think dogs should "Have" to stay on the leash BUT. I do NOT think the dog should run away from the owner chasing animals or be offleash if anyone else is near them. Dogs that behave and stay at their owners side or reasonably close are one thing but someone is 20 feet away from the dog and all those blind spots of tree's ect who knows what your dog may see
or do or whatever.

If my only choice is to leash my dog in order to bring him Im 100% fine with that, all I want is the ability to brng him with me, even if there was no leash law I do not want my dog running off, I dont let my dog run to far away from me no matter where I am in public, no more than I would allow my kid to get out of my sight. Its like Parents who take their kids to the mall and dont pay attention to them, I see it all the time and they are in 1 isle and the kid is 3 isle's away, something terrible happens and the parents comment is I only took my eye off them for 1 second and someone kidnapped them. Whatever I do believe they are sorry and dont want it to happen, and I also think maybe someone who drinks and drives could be sorry if they accidently killed someone but hey you earned it, you didnt accidently get drunk you didnt accidently ignore your kid and you didnt control you dog, and you all ruin it and get stricter laws put on the rest of us for it. thats my problem. I dont get a pitbull to fight him I dont want my dog chasing people I dont have a dog so I can look macho. I have a dog/cat/any animal because I love them that simple. If I could control my house cat I would bring her camping :) As I was saying
I love dogs I was a dog handler and as much as I love them, it takes a great responsibilty I dont want some large breed big dog comming up to me to sniff me I dont care how "friendly" the owner claims he is and for that reason I dont let my dog sniff whoever he wants, if both the person and the dog seem interested in each other Ill let them meet but I dont just push him on someone and if my dog didnt like someone for some reason I wouldnt try to force him to let the person make over him. The same as I wouldnt make my kid give a complete stranger a hug. Yeah thats a very extreame example but you see the point im making. Big dog little dog whatever they all have issues I want to be ini the woods and sleep without hearing a dog barking I dont care if its a tiny "cute" dog or a huge dog. I want to enjoy nature and guess what my dog loves being with me and I love it too, so him not being able to run free keeps him safe, me content knowing nothing accidental from happening. Maybe have a strict law for people getting caught with misbehaving animals like a large fine or something but please dont stop us from bringing our dogs when they do behave.
I dont want to walk all around the other campers I dont want to be near them I want to get away I want solitude, peace and quiet :)
anyway Another huge babble.

Woo, 1052 posts on this bad boy.

Since there is a thread on firearms going on, this seems timely also. ;-)

I'm proposing to congress a bill that would prevent people from hiking on trails while in the company of anything called a toy, tea cup, or miniature. If found breaking this law you will be given one hell of a beating.

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) -- The author of a new state law that allows felony charges against owners of dangerous dogs was hospitalized over the weekend - after his own dog attacked him.

Bob Schwartz, who also is Gov. Bill Richardson's crime adviser, was hospitalized at University of New Mexico Hospital on Sunday night with bites on both his arms, said Pahl Shipley, a spokesman for the governor.
[...]
Schwartz was instrumental in getting a law passed this year that would allow felony charges against owners of dogs deemed dangerous or potentially dangerous and that seriously injure or kill another animal or person.

Hi all, this thread haven't been around for awhile. Sorry to come here and bring bad news........

Look's like it could be the end of my bro-in-law's dog Lucky.

If you go back a few 1000 posts you would know that my S.O.B bro-in-law really couldn't care less about their Black Lab.

This Feb. 06 I was walking Lucky and noticed that he had a little limp in his right paw...and advised my sis and her husband. They didn't do anything about it. They thought it could be an ingrown toenail. Two months later I visited them again...and walked Lucky...now he is really limping.

Anyways, now he's hobbling on three legs and cannot put the injured leg down at all...and for most of the day he just lies in the den (he's not allowed to go up to other floors). I asked them if they're going to try to fix him. They said no because he's 5 years old already...and probably will only have another 4 years of life. Plus...the first step is to have x-ray on Lucky....which will cost $300.00(CAN)....and then operation(s) which the vet cannot guarantee...which will probably cost over $1000.00.

They said they'll let (Un)Lucky lie in the den and see if he can get better by himself...or if he'll die of infection or something.

On a side note...at least my worthless bro-in-law is trying to save some money so he and his family can go to DisneyWorld next year. He's a big spender on electric gadgets for himself...newest laptop, dvd players, big screen t.v's etc....but no money for their dog. Oh yeah...that trip will probably cost them 2 or 3 grand.

One day he'll get his............b@st@rd.

WOW... No sense of loyalty there stanlee. I wonder if he has stoppe to think of the message he's sending his kids.

My dog at 12 1/2 had a nasy limp. I sprung for X-Rays and surgery, even though things were really tight at the time. She's got arthritis and still limps, but she's had a good year because of the surgery. I'd sell off gear if it would get her surgery and give her another good year.

I would spend what ever I could to help my dog Sasha if she needed treatment! There was one time we couldnt afford groceries and we let some bills slide in order to save sashas life--- shes a great dog and deserves as much loyalty and love as she gives. Your SOB BIL will get whats coming to him...its Karma.

I assume you don't want to start trouble with your sister and I can't blame you, but it would only take a phone call to get someone to make them take the dog to a vet.

You're right L.S...I don't want to start trouble with my sis. Anyways...if "someone" did go to their house...and I would presume it's the SPCA....my bro-in-law would just send (Un)Lucky to the gas chamber.

Latest happening with (Un)Lucky's leg...my brother passed by their house to visit Lucky...probably the last time....is that it's swollen up abit. Maybe infection :o(

I witness the widespread abuse of our best friends on a daily basis. Dogs are resilient. They can handle some rough conditions and afflictions... so I tell myself as I drive away with Giz on my lap and Belles chin resting on my shoulder from her back seat location. Wish I could load them all. But these'uns will hafta do - hope I can do, too, for these two.

Man, I hate to say it, but your bro in law is a tool. It's really pretty disgusting. You know what they about treatment of animals being an indication of treatment towards humans.

I wouldn't count on him for a thing.

Sorry, I forgot to respond to Pedxing and Spirit Coyote's comments last post.

I hate to say it...but my nieces are learning that living entities are just "throw-aways". That's what happened to their first dog....a collie...same thing...locked in the den for his whole life...and when he got arthritis...off to the gas chamber he when.

And S.C....you're right....karma will get my Bro-in-law eventually......

WEXFORD, Pa. (AP) -- Two dogs owned by Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker Joey Porter got off his fenced property and killed a miniature horse on a nearby farm, leading to citations that carry several hundred dollars in potential fines.

Porter's dogs, a pit bull and a mastiff, got loose Tuesday and killed the horse that was less than three feet tall. The dogs were still in the dead horse's corral when police and animal control officials arrived, Northern Regional Police Chief Bob Amann said.

Porter was cited Thursday for harboring dangerous dogs, failure to confine the dogs, and failure to have the dogs licensed. The fines carry several hundred dollars in potential fines.

:o( Lucky is dead :o(
The tragedy is over....my sis broke down and called the SPCA to get (Un)Lucky euthanized...which costed them $230.00.

The last few months of Lucky's life wasn't a happy one....everyone could see that he was in pain. Most of the day he would only lie there....and only on one side. The last few days he couldn't even walk at all...both his front legs could not work....I guess the infection spreaded. His loyal master (snicker) had to lift him up and bring him outside to do his toilet stuff.

Finally (Un)Lucky's shoulder started to bleed...and there was a rotten flesh smell...that's when my sis broke down.....

My @sshole bro-in-law had to lift (Un)Lucky into his cage (a cage Lucky lived for a quarter of his life (read previous posts))...because Lucky couldn't walk...and brought him to the SPCA.

Lucky passed on on Thanksgiving Day (Canada)....maybe that's a sign....

so sad. the fact that dogs live such a short life relative to us means that every time one comes into our lives we should prepare for the day when they have to leave. i have heard lucky's story so many times. so sad.

I wonder that the SPCA didn't ask about poor lucky's shoulder and why it was left so long?
I'm sorry Stanlee, I know you really got on well with lucky. Too bad you couldn't have been his partner.

It used to be that the SPCA would do mass killings of animals....I guess a big gas chamber with lots of dogs/cats inside....and euthanizing a pet was free. With the budget cuts going on the last few years...they refused to euthanize Lucky...my bro-in-law had to pay $230.00 for the needle.

Maybe they asked about Lucky's bad condition....my bro-in-law probably came up with some lame excuse....."Oh, I was hoping he would get well by himself.....". I didn't ask for details....I just wanted to knock out a few of his teeth!!!!!

That's a dog gone shame.

I wonder if the dog had separation anxiety?

At least she can say she got ahead in life.

At least she now has closure and can sever all ties with the dog.

Yes, I'm going to hell. I know this.

Some of the news reports say she was a special-needs teenager and her therapy dog was "Chevy".

Is a special-needs teen like one that has been abused?

A $2,500 reward? I bet if they set up a fund, and publicised it nationwide, they could easily get donations for another $50,000. I'd give.

i dont think special-needs necessarily means abused. more like special ed, mentally or emotionally handicapped, probably emotionally if she had a therapy dog. and if thats the case thats even more fcking cruel.
