I didn't mean to equate children with animals, rather the fact that all things (people and dogs) are largely a product of their environments and are subject to learned behavior. You yourself once said something to the tune of a hitter begats a hitter, yes? I'm sure your boys are fine young men.” 12:26:03 PM 9/18/01 Dog Haiku “The cat is not all Bad. She fills the litter box With Tootsie Rolls.” 12:26:39 PM 9/18/01 RE: A**HOLES W/DOGS “BobK, Perhaps you would benefit reading your own posts. My reading comprehension is fine.” 1:09:42 PM 9/18/01 Dog Haiku “Walking through the forest I see bacpac all alone. Will he bite me back?” 1:15:48 PM 9/18/01 RE: A**HOLES W/DOGS “Bacpac, whatever you want to believe....” 1:22:37 PM 9/18/01 RE: A**HOLES W/DOGS “Here's the deal. Like all things recreational, there are certain designated areas for them. In CA, almost no state parks allow dogs on the trail. As far as I know, no National Parks allow dogs on the trail or do designated wildlife areas. The only places dogs are allowed on the trail (some areas require leashes, others voice control) are national forests and wilderness areas. Just as snowmobiling, mountain biking, rock climbing, motor boat, 4 wheeling, etc. all have designated areas, so do dogs. If you don't like having dogs around, go to an area that doesn't allow them.” 1:28:32 PM 9/18/01 RE: A**HOLES W/DOGS “and if you don't like having your dog beaten or shot, for biting someone or THEIR dog, keep it on a leash.” 1:34:18 PM 9/18/01 RE: A**HOLES W/DOGS “I will see you in doggy body language school rad. sheeze” 1:41:28 PM 9/18/01 RE: A**HOLES W/DOGS “Fortunately, it appears most West Coasters are more laid back about this particular, mr. gassed.” 1:50:59 PM 9/18/01 RE: A**HOLES W/DOGS “Sarabelle -- (I am talking to a dog?!!) I ENJOY seeing a certain type of dog on the trail. That's right, one of the biggest dog-haters on this thread ENJOYS seeing some dogs on the trail. The dogs that are with, or quite near their owners. Dogs whose heads pick up, they stop beside their owner and "smile" at you as you approach. I get a real kick out of dogs with packs. I have a "fondness" for Huskies. If I see a well-behaved husky carrying a pack, I am almost sure to ask the owner if I can engage it. I will then continue on my walk daydreaming about having a husky as a companion to my favorite fall and winter activities (what does one do with a husky in the summer?). I am reasonably sure, Sarabelle, that I would enjoy meeting you on the trail. BobK --- My favorite dog of all time was . . . a DOBERMAN. Never again have I spent time with as well behaved and agreeable a dog. Not anxious, yappy and wiggly, or slobbery, or sniffy, or jumpy. Quiet, elegant, composed. A very wonderful dog. I DO NOT enjoy meeting MOST dogs. MOST dogs i have met, in 31 year of hiking, DO NOT meet the descriptions above. And all of you bleeding heart dog lovers can't tell me different. MOST dogs I have met, (as is their nature), run ahead, investigate, do laps, run back and forth between owner and stranger, bark, growl, beg for food, nuzzle, poke nose in crotch, lick, jump, run around in circles underfoot generally getting in the way, demand attention, whine, and (Sarabelle, we may have a problem here,), sniff butts. I do not like most dogs. ANd, frankly, I find that I do not like dog owners who are oblivous to their dogs behavior. I no longer see a childhood friend so that I don't have to subject myself to his two golden retrievers. Goldens are great . . .but a simple lick hello would do me fine. NOT the running jumping licking crap. I'll say it again. Either you like dogs . . .or you don't. There's is precious little middle ground.” 2:14:37 PM 9/18/01 RE: A**HOLES W/DOGS “that is the key. gojo is VERY attentive to belle. i almost feel that sometimes he goes along, just to be her sherpa! LOL!!!! seriously, though. gojo notices a lot of things. when i see him talking to sarabelle or giving her a command, i pay attention, because i've usually missed something. she is indeed a happy dog, and a great trail partner. she has ruined my view of dogs in general. my expectations are higher. i have NEVER been around such a well behaved dog, and i'm fairly sure that i never will, but i'll keep my eyes open.” 2:25:48 PM 9/18/01 RE: A**HOLES W/DOGS “oh, and i wouldn't hesitate, for a second to shoot or beat a dog for biting me, my kids, granda, elvis, or anyone else.” 2:28:21 PM 9/18/01 RE: A**HOLES W/DOGS “Me neither, tho shooting an animal probably wouldn't ever occur since I don't own a gun. My comment was about dogs being off leash.” 2:37:58 PM 9/18/01 RE: A**HOLES W/DOGS “and i'm sure that buddur is a well behaved dog... ...even if it walks a little gimpy!” 2:38:34 PM 9/18/01 RE: A**HOLES W/DOGS “rosey, so you only read half of that sentence, huh? kind of like only paying attention when a dog is NOT bad, eh? must be a character trait.” 2:40:52 PM 9/18/01 RE: A**HOLES W/DOGS “arf, arf” 2:44:03 PM 9/18/01 RE: A**HOLES W/DOGS “CHOMP!!!” 2:47:24 PM 9/18/01 RE: A**HOLES W/DOGS “ow! not the velvet bag!” 2:55:52 PM 9/18/01 RE: A**HOLES W/DOGS “This was a lively thread! I am allergic to dogs, and hate being around roudy ones that jump all over you. However, I believe that some dogs are just fine for the trail (Tarabull's dog is a good example.) Her dog was well behaved, and followed all commands during our dayhike, yet Tara and John are still allowing the dog to adjust before taking the dog overnight. The problem lies with the owners. Maybe dogs should be certified before they should go on the trail, that way, responisble owners and pets Like Tom $ Buddur, Gojo & Sarabelle can enjoy the trails, while irresponsible owners can leave their dogs at home.” 3:58:48 PM 9/18/01 RE: A**HOLES W/DOGS “From the age of 16 to when I started backpacking with my wife (a period of twelve years), I always hiked with a dog. She was a very calm mutt, I can't recall ever having an "incident" with another hiker (albeit, I and my friends rarely backpacked in places where we saw more than half a dozen people in a couple weeks' time). However, with that said, I stopped hiking with dogs after I got married, because my wife is allergic to dogs (boo-hoo...). One of the things I noticed after a few trips was that I saw MUCH more wildlife than I ever saw when I was still "dog-ified." I now wouldn't ever go back to bringing a dog on a backpacking trip...” 6:16:34 PM 9/18/01 RE: A**HOLES W/DOGS “Dogs taste like chicken...” 9:13:26 PM 9/18/01 RE: A**HOLES W/DOGS “that was in poor taste, gear slut. you probably need to marinade it longer.” 9:23:59 PM 9/18/01 RE: A**HOLES W/DOGS “Hey Mediaman, I bring all my guns and dogs when I backpack. Some of my guns are hidden and some are in plain sight. Some of my dogs are loose and some are leashed. What does that make me? Just kidding. Lol” 9:41:48 PM 9/18/01 RE: A**HOLES W/DOGS “LOL @radagast. Perhaps we should ask snackboy for some recipes?” 9:45:35 PM 9/18/01 RE: A**HOLES W/DOGS “Stanlee, But do you bike with your dogs leashed?” 12:58:02 AM 9/19/01 RE: A**HOLES W/DOGS 1:02:14 AM 9/19/01 RE: A**HOLES W/DOGS 1:07:04 AM 9/19/01 RE: A**HOLES W/DOGS 1:09:43 AM 9/19/01 RE: A**HOLES W/DOGS 1:11:47 AM 9/19/01 RE: A**HOLES W/DOGS “Well I must say I hike with both of my dogs. And yes I admit they are not under control at all times. But I have meet dogs on the trail that scared me. But I put that on the owner. My dogs love the woods I will take them every chance I get. I even plan alot of hikes where dogs are allowed. I love my dogs so much my outdoor store is named after my hiking poodle ZOE!!!!!!!!!!! I have seen alot of dogs very well behaved on the trail. Actually I had one of those dogs. I lost her last year. She did anything I ask of her. She always guarded my tent at nite without sleep. She was the best. So I don't believe someone who says they have never meet a good dog on the trail. I have seen many and hike with them all the time. Dogs love the outdoors maybe more than we do. My newest member of the family is still in training but she is getting there. She loves people and would never hurt anyone unless they posed a threat to me. Gee I guess enough said. Barbara” 1:34:21 AM 9/19/01 RE: A**HOLES W/DOGS “Mediaman, only when I need them to pull my fat a@@ up a hill. Lol That reminds me, I might go dog sledding/winter camping this winter...but I hear that those dogs cr@p while running...and their cr@p smells like hell, because their owners feed them raw meats and fish. That's what I hear anyway.” 3:55:28 AM 9/19/01 RE: A**HOLES W/DOGS “A**holes love their dogs more than they love people. These dog-lovers should be eraticated from America. If Americans loved and respected other people (such as Arabs) as much as they do their dogs and cats, maybe we could all just get along.” 5:40:37 AM 9/19/01 RE: A**HOLES W/DOGS “HAHA! Only Spock could possibly make dogs a national political debate. BTW- where'd ya get your name?” 9:04:40 AM 9/19/01 RE: A**HOLES W/DOGS “I would only resort to dog sledding when my ATV gets stuck in one of those ever-widening mud holes on the trail that I keep running into. Why doesn't somebody take care of those? LOL” 9:15:01 AM 9/19/01 RE: A**HOLES W/DOGS “LOL Buddur! I seem to recall Buddur dog cheating on you and crawling in our tarp to snuggle for a few minutes!” 9:17:58 AM 9/19/01 RE: A**HOLES W/DOGS “I never have problems with other dogs because they are always fixated on Belle. Being a female, other female dogs don't bother her, and the males are usually entranced by her fine yeller butt. Here's a suggestion: If you encounter a dog on the trail, drop your pack and RUN FOR YOU LIFE!” 9:30:15 AM 9/19/01 RE: A**HOLES W/DOGS “So you rummage through the packs and get all their good gear? :o)” 9:34:03 AM 9/19/01 RE: A**HOLES W/DOGS “You're clueless, Mr.spock. Anyone who loves something as much as their pets has overflowing compassion for their fellow man. It's apparent to me that the ones who wrote anti-dog posts are more prone to hate and separatism. Like you...need I say more!” 10:15:39 AM 9/19/01 RE: A**HOLES W/DOGS “Buddur -- hhmmmmmmmm .....OR ...MAYBE...someone who has such a strong bonds with an animal, and has anthropomorphized an animal to the extent that the bonds formed with the animal have replaced or supplanted healthy, normal HUMAN relationships, is the person who is the emtional cripple. Unable to form normal human attachments and relationships, project an aura of isolationism and lonerism, prefering to spend time with the animal rather than human companions . . . Ted Kazincsky loved his dog. Need I say more??” 10:22:43 AM 9/19/01 RE: A**HOLES W/DOGS “Sure, Mr.Lee...ok, you picked ONE person out of zillions to make a case, which poorly supports your homegrown hypothesis. So please explain the zillion other pet owners who are normal and have funcational social lives!” 10:29:51 AM 9/19/01 RE: A**HOLES W/DOGS “Or maybe on some very base level it is not a sign of some larger underlying social disfunction and he just happens to like his dog a lot. Maybe? Possibly?” 10:36:49 AM 9/19/01 RE: A**HOLES W/DOGS “I wish my spelling were funcational!” 10:37:43 AM 9/19/01 RE: A**HOLES W/DOGS “So I?m cutting this switchback, moving kinda slow because my bright orange The North Face pack is so overloaded, when all of the sudden, three off-leash Rottweilers burst through the underbrush and surround me, baring their teeth. I pull out my pistol and fire a warning shot into the air when their kilt wearing, vegan owner shows up and pulls out his cell phone to call the rangers on ME. Fortunately, right at that moment the Peregrine Falcon I winged with my warning shot came crashing down on him, leaving me time to escape to my Chevy Suburban and high tail it back to Dodge.” 11:29:21 AM 9/19/01 RE: A**HOLES W/DOGS “why waste a warning shot?” 11:36:12 AM 9/19/01 RE: A**HOLES W/DOGS “bark ,bark ,bark ,bark, woof woof ,bark, bark woof woof, howl. Has anybody here looked at it from the dogs point of view ???” 12:59:53 PM 9/19/01 RE: A**HOLES W/DOGS “Sure, Walrus. Sarabelle has been posting her little paws off!” 1:51:10 PM 9/19/01 RE: A**HOLES W/DOGS “Anybody know where I can get me some of them naked lady mudflaps for my truck?” 2:03:37 PM 9/19/01 RE: A**HOLES W/DOGS 2:09:36 PM 9/19/01 RE: A**HOLES W/DOGS “True story. One night a 10 year old girl got murdered on her back porch and they couldn't find the killer. Same day a dog is found at a park that has outgrown its collar. The collar has so badly cut its neck, the dog is put to sleep. Twice as many people called the local TV stations outraged about the dog than were concerned about the girl.” 3:03:06 PM 9/19/01 RE: A**HOLES W/DOGS “Buddur, sorry you don't have a wife and you hike by yourself. How about you and I become hiking buds and take both our dogs in the woods and fuhgettabout the extremists on here? Bacpac, you're not happy unless you are getting some sort of attention, even from the canine species..usually it's negative, but I like that dog's attitude of ignoring you - SMART DOG!! When I hike local, I take my dog. As a female I enjoy the companionship and security. I worry more about the men I meet on the trail than the dogs I come into contact with. I have a yellow Lab, he's always leashed and supervised. I believe, within reason, dogs have a place in the woods provided certain rules are followed. Having dogs in the woods is no different in my opinion than people blowing cigarette smoke in my face when I hike. If we use some common courtesies, there's room for all of us to enjoy ourselves. Tex.” 6:16:44 PM 9/19/01 Jump to Page << prev
