". Anyone who loves something as much as their pets has overflowing compassion for their fellow man." -Buddur

What a crock, Buddur. How many million dog owners are there that own pit bulls, rotwiellers, huskies, and other vicious dogs who are more unconcerned with terrorizing their neighbors and taking the chance that dog will maul some child. Every dog is wild, and ss is capable of viscious behavior. Dog owners care more about their dogs than the safety of others.

RE: A**HOLES W/DOGS
Not everyone, Spock. I know of a guy whose dog bit a neighborhood kid. He took his dog into a field, dug a hole, had the dog sit in it and shot it in the head. I also know of people who have their dog put to sleep when it attacks people or other dogs.

Dogs are dogs. Rad amd Forrest are dogs. Ooops...that's an insult to dogs everywhere. Rad, you've been on my sh!t list ever since I first appeared here and you chose to insult me for no reason. And now you have the gall to say I've *never* said anything nice or constructive here? You are so assinine, boy. Your wife screws dogs and blows camels.

I didn't know your wife smoked rad. Camels? They don't even taste good.

Well Spock, we had to have a dog (3 yrs. old) put down. The best behaved, smartest dog, I have ever known. The reason was not that he ever hurt anybody but he showed increasing signs of the tendancy towards it. A very sad day it was for us. Your generalizations of dog owners are inaccurate and irresponsible.

RE: A**HOLES W/DOGS
People who raise dogs to be viscious do so for the love of hate, not for the love of the dogs.

It's well documented that people who have a genuine love for pets - indeed, all animals - generally share that same affection with their fellow humans.

Spock -
You are a pathetic little man.
Perhaps you should get a pet - you could learn alot from the gentle purr of a cat, or the loyalty of a well raised dog...

For every well bred, well trained puppy, how many go feral and destroy native fauna.

Please...do tell? And while yer at it Mr.bunyip, please explain how if the majority of backpackers don't bring dogs with them, how they "as a whole" don't destroy native fauna (or marr the countryside with footprints, firepits and pole tic-marks) as much as you say hiking dogs do?
Buddur

RE: A**HOLES W/DOGS
While there certainly are feral dogs that run wild and destroy fauna, it is very unlikely that these were pets accompanying a hiker. Feral dogs usually are strays or farm dogs.

So, while it's a real problem in some areas, it isn't really germane to this discussion.

The topic really isn't about whether you like dogs or don't like them, either. It's about whether your pet should accompany you on the hiking trails.

As I think I made clear, we have dogs, and love them. But they do not belong on the trails, where they could be a bother to other hikers.

If you want to run your dog in the woods, there are millions of square miles of public forestland where you can do that without impinging on hikers, and ruining their experience.

So true Ms.colonial. That's why I gave up walking the trails in the CVNP years ago, got me some topo maps and have been hiking off-trail where I encounter noone. I now know the terrain like the back of my hand, as does Buddur. There's lots of awesome areas still without trails and unknown to most where dogs can run unimpeded by those who shudder at the site of a dog off his leash.

Why do I get the feeling noone checked out the links to the earlier successive posts I made?

Gojo,
No, no, no, nooooooo!!!!!! The last thing in the world some poor animal needs is to be ownded by Spock! Personally, I have no confidence at all that he could be trusted to care for any other life form!

Spock, your characterization of various dog breeds as viscious only shows your ignorance. I have met many wonderful pit bulls and rotties that have great temperaments. In 99.99 percent of the time, it is all about the owner, not the dog.

RE: A**HOLES W/DOGS
The ability to show compassion on animals DOES translate into the ability to show compassion on people. Its an established form of rehab for many younger criminals to allow them access to puppies and kittens to teach them to be responsible for something that depends on them totally. They learn to form a relationship with the animal based on trust, they also learn to care for something that is weak and vulnerable. Granted feeding a cat isnt the same as being a productive person but the basic premise and foundation are cast from the same mold.

So considering it is a right to shoot a dog, would this also extend to our rights as Americans to bear arms against the dog? This could be a good campaign platform for the NRA to extend it's base of sympathy. In light of this what is the most effective calibar in dispatching said dog and why?

my dad had to put down a dog with a .22 magnum, when i was young. we found it, while walking in the woods. it was almost dead, and suffering badly.

I have no problems with dogs in the right situation. I dont think National Parks are the right situation. Can every dog owner say that their mut has never gone off after some local wildlife or other hikers. If these situations can happen on the street why can it not happen in a National Park.

I've got the "shoot the dog" problem figured out. We should all carry guns and shoot the people who brought the unruly dogs. Or maybe the dogs could carry guns and shoot the people who brought them before they were ready to hike. Or maybe the good dogs could shoot the bad dogs and beat the their owners until they figure out how to control their dogs.

Just kidding, and trying to funny!!

What about those A**HOLES W/HORESES?

I hate them, they are so big they block the trail and the don't move to fast, so when Itry and walk past them I may be kicked by them. Then you allways see Hores Sheet on the trail right next to your planed water source.

RE: A**HOLES W/DOGS
This is an old topic but one that unfortunately never gets any better.

Traveling anywhere closer than eight miles from a popular trailhead, you are ALWAYS going to run into idiots with dogs.

Not all dog owners who hike are idiots, but there are damn few who aren't.

I hike with the llamas and it never fails:
I get back near to a trailhead and there always seems to be a dog or three coming around the corner without an owner.

The dogs invariably charge the llamas (who are on a leash!) snapping, growling and trying to get past me to hit on the llamas.

These jerks arrive, and I'm smacking the dogs with my ski pole, trying to brain them.

Oh!

Surprise!

Poor Fido.

See Spot get a fractured skull.

Ask me if I care.

Dogs do not belong anywhere where there are deer or OTHER animals to chase unless they are leashed, or under voice control.

I have yet to meet the dog who returns to it's owner when it is confronted on the trail by deer, rabbits or llamas.

Sarabelle may be the exception.

I have no problems with dogs which are always on a leash. Almost all owners overestimate their ability to control their dogs by voice.

I hate dog sh!t on the trail. Not a pretty site when you have boots with deep lugs.

GI Gojo, My probablim is when I'm trail running for cross contry and I find hores sheet on the trail. If I don't watch my setp I'll slip and loose a race. Or often enough during training there are people on hores not going to fast and there is a narrow path I have to pass them because I'm beeing timed and if I stall behind them undill the path widens I will not get any better

RE: A**HOLES W/DOGS
Here's my bottom line

Were alone, I see your dog on the trail and he's unleashed.
He gets pepper sprayed.

I pepper spray your dog and you get angry with me.
You get pepper sprayed.

After all I'm just defending myself from your dog, and then from you.

Just remember this.
Assault = a threat or attempt to inflict offensive physical contact or bodily
harm on a person (as by lifting a fist in a threatening manner) that puts
the person in immediate danger of or in apprehension of such harm or
contact.

Assault = crime, and anything I do would be considered self defense.

The areas where I hike, the LAW states No Dogs allowed on trails. There are 2 that allow dogs but the owner must have dogs leashed and under control at all times.

You would already be engaged in a criminal activity by having an unleashed dog on the trail, so your credibility in a court of law would be greatly compromised.

Don't want Sparky, Muffy, or Skipper to have an uncomfortable experience? Leave them at home.
