Could of been a coon dog. They do hunt by themselves alot. And some of them are very costly. Some have recievers on them so owner's can track them to the tree. My guess is it was. It is a small world

I'm a dog lover to the highest degree but if it's off leash, ill behaved or agressive it's open season on them and I wouldn't think twice about flogging it or spearing it with a trekking pole.

Get some of that stuff the letter carriers use.

HALT!...is tabasco with a range of about 6-8 feet.

It will stop any dog and shut 'em up too!

For two weeks I was harassed by a BIG male sheperd who knew what the spray was.
He could leap over the fence at will and he did.
He was mighty quick for a 100 pound dog and would turn and bolt when I brandished the HALT!.
One time I drew quick and squirted but he turned quicker.
The spray caught him across the bunghole and his cocky look turned to one of absolute horror as he furiously dragged his burning ass through the grass......cartoon character-style!

Nice stuff, but doesn't always work. I've had MACE (believe it was CN at the time & not CS or pepper) just dribble out the end of the nozzle at a most inopportune time. Kinda gives you a warm fuzzy feeling all over.

The best stuff on the market is called CapStun. It's what some cops carry. My brother is a cop and he will jump in his cruiser sometimes and accidently set it off. LOL! Dumbazz!

Capsaicin is the active ingredient in HALT.

capsaicin

n : colorless pungent crystalline compound derived from capsicum; source of the hotness of hot peppers of the genus Capsicum such as chili and cayenne and jalapeno

Man, that stuff worked on every dog I ever nailed!

And, to a dog, they all stopped barking or yapping.

I had a man threaten me after I sauced his mutt......"OK", I said, shaking the can.

Prolly a Walker hound - a cooner.
The coon may have crossed yer dog's trail and cooner came looking for her - but for no malicious reasons.

Or perhaps the coon passed through your camp and the trail was still "hot".

I heard a Walker strike a trail at Savage Gulf the first night. He continued getting farther away though... thanks to the coon's route selection.

Mace is rarely used anymore, not nearly as effective as OC, which is what MarkO is talking about. A majority of law enforcement agencies have abandoned mace for OC spray, or pepper spray as it's commonly called. You'll find that most of these sprays you buy for your keychain or whatever have also transitioned to this stuff. It hurts like you wouldn't believe. I've been sprayed directly with it twice (to be "certified"), and I don't know how many times I've caught the overspray during an altercation. Unless you've been in the military and had to go through gas training, it's hard to believe how it feels. Amazingly, I have seen people it didn't affect enough to take the fight out of. But enough about that. I saw a guy spray it in his chili once.

I've endured "riot gas" before, and it is not a walk in the park, let me tell you. Here's the story.
Some kid from our high school had broken into the local National Guard armory and stolen, among other things, some cannisters of tear gas. Well, he and his buddies were looking for an excuse to set these things off. A week after the burglary, I was on the football field, playing in our homecoming game. This seemed like a good time for these boys to get their kicks, so they detonated a cannister under the visiting teams bleachers.
There was a huge cloud that enveloped much of those bleachers, then slowly wafted over the field and over the home team's bleachers. Let me tell you, it cleared EVERYBODY out of the vicinity of that football field. Both teams were running around as if bees were attacking them. Many people, especially those with astma, passed out. It was quite the scene.

Yeah, that stuff is bad. We were doing some riot training when I used to work for the city police, in anticipation of Kentucky winning the 98 NCAA championship (which they did). Anyway, the gas team had deployed some way over away from the rest of us. It had all dispersed, but it leaves a white powder on the ground. We didn't know it and walked right through it, stirring it all up again. Bad stuff, much rougher than what the mace stuff used to be.

It Burns ! ! !
Once while carrying mail I drew fast and squirted at a dog not realizing the wind was in my face......so was the stuff!

I couldn't dodge in time and caught some in my right eye and lip.

I was able to continue with my one good eye.

Anyway, were I able to be sure I could shoot it straight at a dog, bear, etc. with enough room between it and me, I would gladly rely on this kind of protection. However, as has been said above, look out for the spray coming back at you!

The only brands I'm familiar with are Cap-stun and Defense Technologies (Def-Tec). I think they're all about the same. Look for the Scoville Heat Units (SHU), that's the measurement for how hot the stuff is. In the end, the brand won't matter, it all burns, I suspect. Be careful what kind of sprayer it has on it. Some have a protective cap over the actual button so you don't accidentally depress it, or so something in your purse, briefcase, gym bag, or whatever doesn't press it. Some have dyes so that a person can be identified later, some comes in a foam that is supposed to just "stick" to your face (which can be wiped off and thrown back at you-I don't recommend the foam), there's a million variants out there.
And by the way, I'm not an expert in the stuff, so don't just take my word on it. I'm only telling you my opinion and experiences. Anyway, all standard rants about liabilities apply. I don't want to hijack Nigal's pleasantly titled thread.

Nice kukery(SP?) Mutt! Them things could lop off a hog's head! A bit heavy though.

The law enforcment only CapStun my brother's department uses is the highest percentage of capsium pepper. When they were shopping around for the best spray they went out to a farm and shot a cow in the face. It went nuts and then went down and then went nuts some more.

A little dab'll do ya!

Blame Canada, Blame Canada.

Just my Cdn0,02$.

I am a southern Canadian Redneck and in a previous life used to run coon hounds on racoons (duh), but hated running around through fields and woods (and into barbed wire)in the dark. We also ran the dogs on fox and coyote in the mixed, but mostly flat farmlands of eastern Ontario. We ran Walkers, Blueticks and one Black and Tan.

I would be surprised if it were a hound. They will 'cry' their typical hound dog call, but going crazy around a tent (or anything else) is far beyond anything I've ever experienced.

However, you say the man came and called the dog off and so who knows - besides everything's changed since the Beatles arrived forty years ago (pretty slick Beatles reference, eh).

CN is the old stuff. Problem was in higher concentrations in a confined area, it's lethal. CS is MUCH stronger but less lethal. A combo of CS & pepper for pro use these days. Stay clear of the older military orange gas. 2 explosures to that within 24 hrs will end your day. It's also the propellent that occasionally fails. Whatever stuff suits your fancy is fine, but doesn't do much good if it doesn't come out of the can. Slow leak, etc whatever. My other preference is an alcolhol based carrier that evaporates on contact.

Dog dispute ends in arrest: Moorhead resident faces felony for hitting pit bull with bat
By Joy Anderson, The Forum
Published Wednesday, April 14, 2004

A Moorhead man arrested for hitting his neighbor's dog with a baseball bat has been charged with mistreatment of animals.

Darrell Francis Poitra, 1023 3rd Ave. N., was charged Tuesday in Clay County District Court with the felony-level offense.

Poitra hit the dog, a pit bull belonging to Yolanda Hanson, after it fought with Poitra's German shepherd, a court complaint said.

But Poitra said Tuesday he was just trying to protect his dog from the pit bull's attack.

Poitra, 39, was released Tuesday from the Clay County Jail after his court appearance.

According to the court complaint, Hanson's children were playing outside with the pit bull, named Romeo, when someone let Poitra's German shepherd outside.

Hanson and Poitra are neighbors sharing a duplex, with connected front and back porches.

The dogs began to fight, and Poitra's dog ran back inside his house. Then Poitra came outside and struck Romeo on the head with a baseball bat, the complaint said.

After Poitra hit Romeo, the dog fell down the porch stairs and lay still, bleeding from the nose and head, Hanson said Tuesday. Her children and mother, who was baby sitting, saw the incident, she said.

Moorhead animal control officer Steve Kemper, who responded to the police call, said he thought, at first, that the dog was going to die.

On Tuesday, after a $300 trip to the veterinarian, the 2-year-old dog was healing but still quiet, Hanson said.

"He's kind of just getting his head together, just resting," Hanson said.

But Poitra said his 9-month-old German shepherd, which has been attacked several times by Romeo, was outside first.

Though Hanson said Romeo was wearing a muzzle, which fell off during the fight, Poitra said Romeo bit his dog "all over."

Then the pit bull chased the German shepherd onto Poitra's porch, he said.

"He tried to come into my house," Poitra said. "When he's coming toward my dog with his mouth wide open, I didn't know who he was coming for."

But Hanson said though Romeo has had "confrontations" with Poitra's dog, he's not generally aggressive. She's tried to compromise by keeping him away from the neighboring dog and using a muzzle, she said.

"People get the wrong impression about pit bulls," Hanson said. "But he's our family and he can't be hit with a bat."

The name "pit bull" is actually a general term covering several breeds of dog, according to the online Dog Owner's Guide. The breeds were created to fight other dogs, so they have to be watched with other animals, but they're usually not aggressive toward people, according to the Pit Bull Rescue Central Web site.

Though some cities ban pit bulls, Moorhead has no regulations against any specific breed, Kemper said.

Dogs not on their owners' property must be leashed, but they can run loose in their owners' yards, he said.

Mistreatment of animals can be just a misdemeanor offense, but charges can be upgraded to a felony if the animal is severely injured or killed, Kemper said.

Hong Kong: A man has bitten a dog to death in eastern China after it attacked him as he walked home with friends after a night out, a news report said.

The man, who was drunk, pounced on the dog when it nipped him on the fingers and cheek in Shanghai.

He repeatedly bit it until it died, according to the South China Morning Post.

Tennessee seems like a bad place to be a dog. Cop shoots family pet on interstate... man kicks dog like football... and now:

Boys killed dog on barbecue grill

Two boys have been charged with animal cruelty in the burning death of a puppy on a gas grill in Springfield.
<snip>
No motive has been revealed.

''They were just doing it'' to do it, said Lt. William Watkins, a spokesman for the Springfield Police Department.

The young suspects told police that a man gave them the puppy, but authorities have not found the man or any other owner.

A neighborhood boy saw the incident and ran to neighbors to get help, Watkins said.

''When officers arrived, the dog had jumped off the grill and was on the ground, barely breathing,'' Williams said. The puppy died soon after officers arrived.

KNOXVILLE (AP) -- Knoxville police issued their first citation under the city's 2003 "pooper scooper" ordinance, handing a judge's wife the ticket for refusing to pick up after her dog.

The law was designed after people complained about dog feces in the downtown area.

Michele Jenkins was cited Friday after a bicycle officer watched as Jenkins' red chow defecated near an intersection.

Jenkins is the wife of Knox County Criminal Court Judge Ray Lee Jenkins.

Knoxville police says she was given an opportunity to clean it up, but refused.

This is a letter published in The Tennessean by a Nashvillian after the puppy burning incident was in the newspaper:

"Since I travel a lot, I am always meeting people from other parts of the country as well as abroad. Whenever I'm engaged in a conversation with someone where we are talking about where we're from, it seems that more often than not (especially with these recent animal abuse cases), the person I'm talking to responds with, "Oh yeah, that's the city where the dog was kicked... the puppy was grilled .. the horses were starved... the dog was found in a barrell...,etc.. etc.. etc..." It seems we're known to outsiders as a place where we breed animal abusers and young psychopaths more so than for country music or the Tennessee Titans."

Yeah, that's what I want to be known for:(
