I hear the weather can get pretty harrowing in that area. It's nice to match faces with names. Thanks!” 12:01:54 AM 9/18/01 RE: White Mountain Trip Photos “Yeah, The weather can get pretty wild. Twice on that trip, we had winds gusting up to 50 mph.” 12:10:45 AM 9/18/01 RE: White Mountain Trip Photos “Nice pics walkindude Nice, very nice” 12:14:22 AM 9/18/01 RE: White Mountain Trip Photos “Thanky!!” 12:23:13 AM 9/18/01 RE: White Mountain Trip Photos “BTW, All these pics was taken with one of them disposable cameras. My SLR bit the dust and that was all I had to use.” 12:25:36 AM 9/18/01 RE: White Mountain Trip Photos “Well, it's as they say. It isn't the camera that takes the shots. It's not just about technique or timing either. It's about what's in the heart too.” 12:29:18 AM 9/18/01 RE: White Mountain Trip Photos “I agree with that but those manual cameras sure do help. I gotta get another OM-10 now.” 12:33:41 AM 9/18/01 RE: White Mountain Trip Photos “I had a Minolta point-and-shoot that lasted for years. Couldn't have been happier with it. It was a camera that you could pull out easily, snap the shot, literally throw behind you (it was on a tether), and keep on truckin'. I may just go back that way. This big hair Nikon deal is just quite heavy.” 12:39:56 AM 9/18/01 RE: White Mountain Trip Photos “OM 10? OM 51's are better.......heh... so, dude....glad you got off your lazy tush and shared the lovely pics........I love wind ..and weather........you guys had a variety of it walking amongst those presidents. the pics are a nice accompaniment (sp?) to one of the best trip reports i have read here lately. you think i could make it to Lake of the Clouds? I have crutches..er..i mean hiking poles now ..:)” 1:20:46 AM 9/18/01 RE: White Mountain Trip Photos “OM51. HAHAHA! Good one Toni!! Yeah, you could make it to Lake of the Clouds. It's a lotta up but you could do it. Thanks OM!” 6:45:53 AM 9/18/01 RE: White Mountain Trip Photos “UK and Slasher here. Awesome photos. Looks like some great views” 6:47:31 AM 9/18/01 RE: White Mountain Trip Photos “Looks great! I am getting more excited, I will be there in two weeks for a four-day weekend. I'll be doing "car-camping" and day hikes. (Am I allowed to say that on this board?) Suggestions for the best three or four day hikes in the whites????” 7:47:11 AM 9/18/01 RE: White Mountain Trip Photos “Great Pics Dude. Brings back good memories. Thanks for posting! Fritz: Since you'll be hiking in early October, you need to think about what kind of weather you are ready for. If the weather is good, you can dayhike Washington. A day hike of Lafayette is less intense. Cannon is also a great day hike. Arethusala falls is a nice easy hike. There are plenty more....” 8:13:36 AM 9/18/01 RE: White Mountain Trip Photos “Nice pics guys, great views!” 9:14:15 AM 9/18/01 RE: White Mountain Trip Photos “Great photos! Thank you for ruining my day, maybe even my week or month! I sure miss hiking in the Whites, such rugged mountains and lush green forests.” 12:15:41 PM 9/18/01 RE: White Mountain Trip Photos “Dude, great photos. Nice to get a look at TTers in action and also to see another part of the country. Here's an assignment for you: in 500 words or less, compare hiking in the NE to your usual Tennessee stomping grounds.” 12:31:11 PM 9/18/01 RE: White Mountain Trip Photos “Thanks for sharing. What, no pictures of the secret service guys?” 12:58:45 PM 9/18/01 RE: White Mountain Trip Photos “OK Kleetn, Here's almost 300 words. I'd write more but I got other things to do. LOL Hiking in the Southeast is much tamer than the Whites. Trails are straight up and down where in the south everything switchbacks. Except for occasional "balds" we don't have Alpine areas. That was a totally new thing for me to experience those kind of winds! Also, following piles of rocks is much different from following white blazes. The Lower elevations along the creeks were the only areas that made me feel like I could have been back down South again. I was suprised at the lack of wildlife in these areas though. I expected to see deer, bear, lizards, skunks, racoons, or something. I did see a garter snake which I tried to catch be it got away. The trails in the whites were suprisingly well marked even in the Alpin zone. I expected to be checking the map more often. One odd thing was having to pay $6 to stay in a shelter or tentsite. There is no money hungry clubs (AMC) in the south to want to charge in the backcountry. Needless to say, that was a new concept for me. It had it's advantages though. The shelters and tentsites were well maintained and for the most part free of pests. At Ethan Pond there was a designated "kitchen" area with metal boxes to store your food in. I only saw one mouse the whole trip and that was at Garfield Shelter. He managed to get on the food bag. All it took was some dirrect hit with a boot and he was never heard from again. Mice have NASRAT Races and Feetball games in shelters down South. It was almost hard to sleep at night not hearing the occasional scampering across the floor and up in the rafters.” 6:53:51 PM 9/18/01 RE: White Mountain Trip Photos “Fritz I highly recomend the Franconia area! Liberty, Lincoln, & Lafayette. Garfield too if you have time. That is a AWESOME stretch!! Alpine is so cool!!” 6:59:56 PM 9/18/01 RE: White Mountain Trip Photos “What, only 50 mph winds? You gotta go back to Mt. Washington in winter with 100+ mph winds and 0 temps.” 7:06:48 PM 9/18/01 RE: White Mountain Trip Photos “That sounds cool!” 7:25:49 PM 9/18/01 RE: White Mountain Trip Photos “I am waiting for a leprechaun to jump out of one of those mossy knolls” 11:07:29 PM 9/18/01 RE: White Mountain Trip Photos “walkingdude -- Got back my pictures yesterday . . .couple of me and th wife up on Garfield by the foundation of the firetower. Speaking of Bugaboo's mossy grottos . . .did you guys happen to notice, (as you were flying along), the mossy area in the col after descending from South Twin and before getting tothe hut???” 8:56:26 AM 9/19/01 RE: White Mountain Trip Photos “The photos made my day. Looks like a great trip.” 9:07:01 AM 9/19/01 RE: White Mountain Trip Photos “DANG IT! Again - this new internet filter won't let me go there! Beeyastad!” 9:34:04 AM 9/19/01 RE: White Mountain Trip Photos “Lee Did you see the one picture of me standing next to the old foundation on Garfield? I remember the trail down to the hut. 1000 ft. loss in .8 of a mile. That's one steep downhill. By the time we got down that I was looking for the hut! Do remember a mossy spot in paticular but I'm sure I saw it. Glad ya liked 'em HPM. Bummer Gojo. You might have to go to Rad's house so you can see them.” 6:04:09 PM 9/19/01 RE: White Mountain Trip Photos “see what? gnomes?!?!?” 6:07:48 PM 9/19/01 RE: White Mountain Trip Photos “Great pics Dude! Thanks. Glad you guys had a good time.” 8:15:40 PM 9/19/01
