“The late guitar player Randy California--played with Spirit--was given the name "California" by Jimi Hendrix.

In 1966 two guys named Randy were hangin' and playing guitar with Jimi in NYC.
One of them was from California and hence the name.

Mr. California was 14 at the time, or so I'm told.

Randy California died about 6 or 7 years ago in Hawaii.
He had just saved his young son from drowning and was himself taken by a rip current.
I don't think his body was found.”
