RE: Backpacker's War
Your forgetting the best Mountain Fighter and general scary dudes with big scary knives. The Ghurkas.
During the Falklands War Just the mention of them was enough to make hundreds of Argies wet them selves.
Also look how close they are. During Indian Mutiny The poms used them to subdue the Sepoys and Pathans (Afghans).

Walrus, cast your memory back a few years. When the Canadian Army DISBANDED its airborne units...and for what? Making the new recruits eat HUMAN EXCREMENT! That sounds like one professional army to me.

I do like Canadian bacon, but your beer sucks.

walrus-
Speakin' of beavers, I/we shared the mess hall at Val Cartier(north of Quebec City) with some of Canuckland's finest infantry.......or so I'm told.

I think they are the 22nd Royal Regiment(?).
Those dudes have a BEAVER.......whoa, the word beaver is totally left-handed!.....flash/pin on their caps!

RE: Backpacker's War
Before the advent of microbreweries in the US, EVERY country in the world made better beer than what was available in the US! And the microbrews merely brought SOME of American beer up to par with what everyone else has been drinking for ages!
I -do- like some US brews now (Fat Tyre, just as an example), but it used to freak me out in the 70's how even countries like Ivory Coast and Surinam could make a better beer than anything that was then available in the good ol' US of A!

RE: Backpacker's War
The reason I suggested Japanese infantry is that they can be some scary dudes.
The 442 Regimental Combat Team(Japanese Americans) terrorized the Germans in Italy.

I also read somewhere that the "ideal" infantry would be one with Japanese riflemen, American field officers, and German staff planners.

Of course the U.S. Marine Raiders terrorized the IJA in the island campaigns.
A combination of wicked physical training, team tactics, better small arms, and superior support made the Raiders practically un-beatable.

Given proper support and transportation the IJA would have been more trouble than it was.
