How's your economy?
How's your area dealing with the recent events? There's a lot of people here in Las Vegas really feeling the economic backlash of last week's events. National Airlines whose home is Las Vegas has already cut back flights and laid people off and now the casinos are getting ready to lay off thousands of people. This place has become a ghost town in less than a week, great for commuters, bad for business. It's time to update the resume becuase you just never know what's going to happen.
I'm trying to do my part though, I'm buying new truck tires tomorrow and we're going to see Les Miserables on Thursday.

RE: How's your economy?
My own businesses are holding up surprisingly well. People are traveling by car and eating out of grocery stores rather than restaurants. Lots of RVs and boats on the move. Our curio business is really hurting though. People are not buying anything they don't have to have.

I guess I am lucky. My stocks had already tanked so bad I didn't loose much in yesterday's drop.

Business is booming too.

Hey, my stock is up 4.17%! Not that it really makes a difference at $.06 a share! Crappy stock! I didn't choose it, it was a gift.

'Wall Street climbing back

NEW YORK - Wall Street staged a modest
rally this afternoon as the Dow climbed back above 9,000 a day after its biggest one-day point drop in history.'

Anybody got any spare change? Now is the time to plunge it into the stock market, can only go up from here...

RE: How's your economy?
We have endured past crises and I am sure we will endure this one. The key
is not to panic.
Although past performance does not guarantee future results, the Dow Jones
Industrial Average was at approximately 117 when Pearl Harbor was attacked,
fell 20% to 93 by early May 1942 and then rallied to 145 by July 1943. In
August 1962, at the time of the Cuban Missile Crisis, the Dow was at 615. It
fell to 550 in October and then rose to 650 in December and 767 by December
1963.
Finally, let's not overlook the impact of President Kennedy's assassination
on the Dow. The market fell nearly 20 points in 20 minutes before the
exchanges shut down. When the markets reopened and Lyndon Johnson was sworn in as president, the Dow went from 712 to 825 by April 1964 and to 891 by
November 1964.
If these events show anything, they suggest that buying into these "panics"
is usually the most logical strategy for investors who can stand the
accompanying risk. More important, unless there is good reason to do so, we
do not want to sell unnecessarily, as that will only play into the hands of
the terrorists.
Remember, bull markets start when the news cannot get any worse. We may just
be at that point.

I guess my point was missed. I'm 26 so I'm not worried at all about my retirement stocks.
I am worried about the possibility of thousands of people being out of work this week in my city because it's very dependent on tourism and airline travel.

Rep, Utah has made itself dependant on tourism. Already there has been cancellations for the Olympics and I?m sure the ski season won?t be killer either. My own business is doing good.

I think Vegas is going to take it on the chin. One of my flights has been cancelled already. People are too afraid to fly and who can blame them?

I heard about a flight with one passenger on it. The stewardess came over the intercom and said, "Pam, Captain Jones has turned off the seat belt sign. You are free to move about the cabin."

Picture it....a plane that appears to be bouncing. The attendant comes over the intercom and says, "Pam,Captain Jones would appreciate it if you would stop jumping up and down in the aisle...and no, we are not 'there yet'."

RE: How's your economy?
Actually we are not doing to bad...People are spending. It is really scary, I work in retail and I am opening my second retail store this week. I hope all people really think about this and remember keep spending the country needs it.
We must not let them win.
On the hand of airlines etc. This could be a boost to travel in the US more people will drive and leave the country for vacations.
We have to all pull together and keep our country running strong.

RE: How's your economy?
The news about the airlines is really disturbing. The bright side is that most people get over fear generated by a "remote" even quickly and will probably be rushing to gobble up bargain fares pretty soon. The American people are absolutely dependant on air travel.

I'm not in the airline business but my brother is. My own business will suffer if unemployment spreads because a lot of potential clients won't be able to afford my fees.

I expect any layoffs in the aerospace and travel industries will trickly down to Southern California.

I went to Disneyland/Disney California Adventure last Friday and the crowds were very light.

Enrollments are up at our university. It is largely due to demographics...and our great teaching ability, of course.

The economy here in NE. PA is terrible, but has been since last spring. Over 2000 good paying manufacturing jobs were lost by companies moving to Mexico and China in a span of 2 months and the ripple effects are having even more of an effect. If afraid it won't get much better with what's happening now.

Here in New Mexico, tourism may fall off, but Intel, Motorola, Phillips should do ok down on the consumer side, up on the security and defense side. Sandia and Los Alamos National Labs are huge employers here. I can't imagine they will be cut back. I hope they have good plans for bio or chem attacks!!!!!!!!

Watching the company the bank hired empty out the house two doors down. Our neighbors got so in debt they abandoned their house and let the bank have it. It's a #&%!$ty thing to watch happen.

Heck at least they didn't try to sell it to the insurance company.

Sass, people make bad financial decisions, the question is "who is going to pay for it?"

You know I see it everyday. We had a situation with a resident who had not paid rent in 6 months. When we evicted her we walked in her house. The floor was littered with Lotto Tickets, Beer Cans, Cig packs, there were two working VCR/DVD players she left behind. Here is the kicker, her rent when adjusted for income was 75.00 a month.

You know a few years ago they did a study that the 'lowest" income citizens get aorund $8,000 a year but expend $19,000 a year....

I know it's their own fault. They were left that house twenty years ago by his Mom. It was paid for. The wife was busy paying me for massages last fall left and right, their home was filled with collectable dolls and trinkets. He was out of work. I just hate that it is happening two doors down. Good people make dumb decisions.

You can see how I found it unusual. I have friends who are career FF and haven't been out on such calls, but I could see it if some hazardous condition were discovered during the eviction.

If I didn't have all my assets tied up right now I'd take advantage of it.
