Online vs Real Life

“Those of you that have actually met folks that you have talked to online.. were they a lot different in real life?”

“It's a little weird when you first meet them. Putting the faces and real mannerisms with the persons you've talked to online. I haven't done a group hike, so I don't know what it's like to meet a bunch of TTers at once. I would guess that'd be less weird cuz there's more people to focus on. BUT... as far as meeting one TTer at a time, as I said, it can be a little weird at first. And then I've found it to be fine and they're what I've expected. Quite a bit so, in fact. :-)

“The internet is a form of virtual reality and skews things. You can't take your impressions of someone from what they say a forum too seriously. As an example, I bet bacpac is a pretty nice guy in person.”

“It can be fairly interesting. I met something like 14 people all at once a few years ago. Some of the more talkative people online were quiet, and vice versa. Some people were just as one might imagine; some weren't.

“I?m pretty much the same. Although one reason I do not like big group hikes is the fact that when I get in a group I tend to pick up other?s bad habits. If someone on the trip cusses like a sailor I end up cussing more which I try and control in everyday life. I also tend to, after a pint or two or three, end up crossing the lines of good taste. Like the one trip I went on with about 20 other TTers and I told the one comma joke around the fire. Let?s just say the punch line was, ?Hey doc, I think she?s choking.?”

i've started hiking with a lot of folks that i work with. it makes work a lot more fun!”

“So far I have seen it both ways.. some ppl I talked to online were much better looking.. nicer.. more talkative. funnier.. etc..

But there have been a few... eWwwww.. After that I knew WHY they hid online instead of being out in public..”

“Personally, I can be more quiet in person. I let my opinions be known here, because that's what this place is for, but in real life, I don't walk around giving my opinions unless asked.

As for others I've met, I'd say everyone is similar to their online personalities. I never really had definite ideas on how everyone would be, so I was open to meeting them.”

“Most people are about what you expect. Some are more talkative in reality that on TT. Some clam up. *Walkincrow for example talks your head off in camp but his comments on TT are just to-the-point.
*Rad is quite in a group but pretty much a chatter box in a small group.
*Jerbear is a NUT!!!! Gotta love that guy.
*Sunshine is pretty quiet in person.
*Naked Ape is a freakin Blast!! One of my favorite TT buddies.
*Sirpete is an awesome guy too. Also a very good friend!
*Steve Hiker..... Didn't know what to make of him at first. He had two black eyes the first time I met him. He's a good guy though.
*Hyperpacker has the perfect trail name for himself!
*Pedxing wasn't feeling too well when I met him. I hope to hike with him again sometime.
* Gojo & Sarabelle are deffinatly a set of characters ya gotta put on your list to hike with.
*Cockroach hardly ever says a word.

Most people say I was pretty much what they expected. Don't know if that's good or bad. LOL! I'm kinda quiet in a big group but more social around less people. Kinda shy I recon.
My first TT trip ever was at Red River Gorge. 17 TTers!!!!!!

“I only met a few from this site but have met many from "another" one. They seemed different than their online personalities at first, but after everyone got more comfortable they were about the same. I have met some of the folks I consider my closest friends on these hikes in the past. Dude, Tilt is a convert from the "other" site. lol”

“I know when and if you where to meet me I would be very quiet, and envious. I'm always afraid of what people are thinking of me. In a large group I would probably not say a word, or single out one TTer and talk/hike with the entire time and not really pay much mind to every one else. I'm very shy and would never say half the stuff I do on TT. I usually never talk about sex, or make jokes about it to people, nor will I ever insult some one like I do on trail talk.”

“Nope. I've been 'Tilt' just about exclusively for over three years on the 'net. (maybe 4? I've lost count) I've used a couple of other names in other places, just for fun, like... 'Mark'.”

“It is neat to know what their voice sounds like or how they talk and then read their posts. It does add more. Of the nine I've met there really weren't any surprises. And I would hike with any of them again.”

“I think the people I have met are nice enough online. But even nicer when in person. Of course I have met them all on the trail or on trips. Which tends to make most of us happier.”

“I should qualify some comments I made earlier.. all previous meetings of real life people from online conversations were NOT TTer's.. There is only one TT'er I have ever met that I know of.

All of my past meetings were RP'ers.”

“The first hike I took with internet buddies I had no idea what they would be like. There were 16 women ranging from 20 something to 60 something. That was a couple of years ago and I am still fond of all of them.”
