Autumn Splendor
Here in southeast Pennsylvania, the leaves have just started to turn.

How far along are the leaves where you are?

How about in New Hampshire...anyone?

Here in Utah, the mountains are almost in full glory. Due to a couple of dry summers, the colors aren't as vibrant and the leaves are falling off the trees soon after changing color.

Here in Northern California things haven't changed much except for the days getting shorter, and things aren't blooming like crazy.

I just notice the first aspens and oaks in the Sandias above Albuquerque. Cottonwoods in town are starting to change.

New Hampshire was just at the brink of the leaves changing 2 weeks ago. We got a ways to go down here in Tennessee though.

Nothing much happening in western MA, yet. A few trees here and there, but trees under some sort of stress always turn earlier. I figure we're about 3 weeks from seeing any real color. Saw some spotty color along the Blue Ridge last week, a few pockets of trees and some low growth.

Some are beginning to turn here in the Bay Area, but I'm anxious to head to Tahoe to see the Aspen turn its rampant golden hue amongst the alpine laden mountainsides...

I miss the awesome rainbow of colors in the midwest. Michigan Falls spell fresh applce cider & cinnamon donuts to me, and I wanna head back to the Franklin Cider Mill.

While I've not been back East at this time of year, I understand you guys are a tough place to beat for Fall splendor...

I have a Maple tree in my yard that turns colors and drops its leaves before most trees in the neighborhood. Well...it's time to bust out the rake.

Not much going on in West Tennessee yet.. but the temperature is starting to drop.. bet I even have to mow my yard a few more times.. Hoping my trip to East Tennessee (Roan Mt 10/17-21) in October will be right about when it's peaking, or shortly thereafter.. :)

The aspens on the San Francisco Peaks near Flagstaff are turning now. I would say they will be their glory in about a week. Nothing much turning around town yet.

RE: Autumn Splendor
About 20% changed here in Northern Wisconsin, though as mediaman noted, the first trees that have changed have lost their leaves soon after, so it may not appear quite that far along on a quick glance. But the pace is picking up. A good frost is needed. I'll be in the U.P. this weekend, so I'll see what's going on along Superior.

Hey mediaman, where in Utah are you? I'm heading up this weekend for a fall foliage road trip. I'll start at Kolob Res. in Zion National Park on Friday night and hopefully take a variety of backcountry roads to the Mt. Nebo Scenic Road on Saturday. Then make my way back to Vegas on Sunday. What do you think the colors will be like in those areas this weekend? Also, how crowded do you think the Mt. Nebo area campgrounds will be?

Here in south La. we usually start to see some dirty fall colors in late November. December's the "peak." A little earlier in cenral La. Heat and humidity often stick around till Christmas.

That's why I head north. First trip of the new hiking year will be next week to Slickrock/Joyce Kilmer (NC). Should be a little bit of color at the higher elevations.

No color yet in WA, atleast not at ground level. Hubbie's co-workers have been called for duty, so he is oncall as a plumber at his job, no overnighters for us. I definitely want to get in one or two fall day hikes though.

Fall is beautiful here, but we do lack the color red in our scenery.

I've read it all, it's black and white
The spectrum made a shade I like.
The crimson rays are ruby bright
Technicolor light.
Red! I want red, there's no substitute for red.
Red! Paint it red, green ain't mean compared to red.
You don't know what it does to me,
My crimson intensity
I'm haunted by the mystery,
The mystey of red.
Red knocks 'em dead,
Some like it hot, I like it read.
Red is my lover, got it covered
Red is my number, sure as a coma
Red is my drummer, and I hear red thunder
Move over brother,
Red's a motherfu...(cker)
(Red! Red!)
Thats' what I said...
(Red! Red!)
Come on to bed
(Red! Red!)
Gimme' that expensive spread..

RE: Autumn Splendor
yellow you say, okay, let's see...

look at the stars
look how they shine for you
and everything you do
yeah they were all yellow
i came along
i wrote a song for you
and all the things you do
and it was called yellow
so then I took my turn
oh what a thing to have done
and it was all yellow
your skin
oh yeah your skin and bones
turn into something beautiful
and you know
you know I love you so
you know I love you so
i swam across
i jumped across for you
oh what a thing to do
?cos you were all yellow
i drew a line
i drew a line for you
oh what a thing to do
and it was all yellow.
and your skin
oh yeah your skin and bones
turn into something beautiful
and you know
for you i?d bleed myself dry
for you i?d bleed myself dry
it?s true
look how they shine for you
look how they shine for you
look how they shine for
look how they shine for you
look how they shine for you
look how they shine
look at the stars
look how they shine for you
and all the things that you do

or maybe a pretty orange...

I was walking along, minding my business
When out of an orange-colored sky
Flash! Bam! Alakazam!
Wonderful you came by

I was humming a tune, drinking in sunshine
When out of that orange-colored view
Wham! Bam! Alakazam!
I got a look at you

One look and I yelled "Timber"
"Watch out for flying glass"
'Cause the ceiling fell and the bottom fell out
I went into a spin and I started to shout,
"I've been hit, This is it, This is it!"

I was walking along minding my business
When love came and hit me in the eye
Flash! Bam! Alakazam!
Out of an orange-colored sky.

RE: Autumn Splendor
Anger, he smiles,
towering in shiny metallic purple armour
Queen Jealousy, envy waits behind him
Her fiery green gown sneers at the grassy ground

Blue are the life-giving waters taken for granted,
They quietly understand
Once happy turquoise armies lay opposite ready,
But wonder why the fight is on
But they're all bold as love, yeah, they're all bold as love
Yeah, they're all bold as love
Just ask the axis

My red is so confident that he flashes trophies of war,
and ribbons of euphoria
Orange is young, full of daring,
But very unsteady for the first go round
My yellow in this case is not so mellow
In fact I'm trying to say it's frigthened like me
And all these emotions of mine keep holding me from, eh,
Giving my life to a rainbow like you
But, I'm eh , yeah, I'm bold as love
Yeah, yeah
Well I'm bold, bold as love (hear me talking, girl)
I'm bold as love
Just ask the axis (he knows everything)
Yeah,
yeah,
yeah!

switchback, how daring to choose orange. You know oranges, poranges, nothing rhymes with oranges. I think that was said by H.R. Puff n Stuff.

Yellow, so happens, my skin is an olive color, which tends to look yellowish in the winter when not tanned.

There's one thing I miss terribly about the East..fall color change. There is absolutely nothing like it anywhere else in the country, those of you in the midwest & west who haven't lived there, you can't possibly imagine the wonder & beauty...

This from someone who often can only pity anyone not living in the Sierra's...

Reptiles,

I'm in SLC. I just talked to a co-worker who hiked Mt. Nebo two weeks ago. He said that loop is a beautiful drive with lots of campgrounds. When he was there, hardly anyone was camping. The leaves were changing quite a bit already but he thinks they should be at their peak right now. If you do any hiking he suggests you take water because there's not much there. I'm assuming that goes for camping, too. I'm on call at work for the next two weeks so I can't leave the valley. I'm afraid I might miss the colors this year.

Yellow is the color of my true love's hair
In the mornin', when we rise
In the mornin', when we rise
That's the time, that's the time, I love the best

Blue is the color of the sky
In the mornin', when we rise
In the mornin', when we rise
That's the time, that's the time, I love the best

Green is the color of the sparklin' corn
In the mornin', when we rise
In the mornin', when we rise
That's the time, that's the time, I love the best

Mellow is the feeling that I get
When I see her -- um-hmm
When I see her -- uh-huh
That's the time, that's the time, I love the best

Freedom is a word I rarely use
Without thinkin' -- um-hmm
Without thinkin' -- uh-huh
Of the time, yes the time, when I been low

Went for a bike ride on the Bizz Johnson Trail in NE Cal (rails-to-trail). Leaves are just barely starting to turn. Because of the drought they seem to be changing from green directly to brown. Bummer.

Otherwise the weather is perfect -- 80's during the day, 30's at night.

RE: Autumn Splendor
Our popple/aspen show few signs of changing yet, while the maples are full speed ahead. I've started wondering if it's because the aspen really got hit hard early in the summer by tent caterpillars and had to releaf. Some aspen seem to have barely gotten the second set of leaves up to full size; maybe they just want to churn out a bit more chlorophyl before dropping.

Drove across the middle of the Upper Peninsula on Saturday, returning Sunday. I could notice the difference between the two days. Color change ranged from 20% to 80%, averaging about 50%, depending on type of trees and how far north. Got nice and cold last night, so I expect that it will continue apace. This coming weekend should see it reaching its peak in some places in Superior Country.

We are at the zenith of autumn color here. The leaves are falling steadily, even when there is no breeze. My kids have been making leaf piles and jumping in them all day. I love this time of year. Tonight we are supposed to have heavy rain, which will probably knock a good many more leaves down. Too bad autumn color and temperatures can't last several months here.
