RE: Autumn Splendor
We spent the weekend in the Blue Ridge where the leaves are at peak. Saturday was beautiful. Sunday was crazy with heavy fog and we could only see the leaves on the ground below us. They were still beautiful.

The Smokies will be at peak next weekend and probably pretty good the following week.

RE: Autumn Splendor
I just got back tonight from a week in the Whites. Columbus Day was spectacular with a few inches of fresh snow (several on Mt Washington) combined with peak autumn colors. It put timberline hiking on hold for 2 days but the scenery was amazing. Wednesday's hike up the Falling Waters Trail to Little Haystack, then up to Lincoln and Lafayette was mixed with mud, slush, ice, knee deep snow drifts and teeth chattering wind, but the colorful views and white capped Mt Wash. made it well worth the effort.

By Thurs the ice was gone which made the hike to Washington safer. The Ammonoosuc Ravine Trail was steep and sloppy, but we were treated to some great waterfall scenes with fall colors and even some icicles starting to form. The wind gods were somewhat kind and it wasn't howling at the summit. It wasn't quite clear but visibility was great and the views stunning. It would have been even more enjoyable if I hadn't been asked about 15 times to take someone's picture. NEVER pull a tripod out of your pack or you'll be a marked man. One or two I don't mind but they were starting to line up! The 2 guys from Ohio I hooked up with were already heading towards Clay so I had to scramble to catch up. Going down the Jewel Trail was tough, not so much due to terrain, but to concenrating because the color in the valley was so nice.

The week was completed with a hike up Jefferson through the Caps. No wind, blue sky, great color. It truly was an Autumn Splendor week in the Whites.

How's it looking out there peeps? Not much out here in the Bay Area -except for the poison oak!

I'm heading up to the Sisiyou Mtns/Klamaths this upcoming week and then to Tahoe a week later. I hope to see something, somewhere, sometime.

there were little speckles here and there in Shenandoah NP last weekend. I suspect there'll be even more today.

It will be interesting to see what Fall looks like in the Mtns of NC this year..there are A LOT of leaves stripped from trees. There are signs though..the sour wood of course and a few early maples.

I had hoped to get up to Black Balsam area this year to see the colors...Grave Yard Fields etc..but the BRP is closed indefinetly :-(

Northern Pennsylvania has started turning. We were north of Williamsport and saw a lot of color. Should be prime in a week or ten days. A lot of leaves have already fallen though, with all the rain from the hurricane last week. Lots of storm damage - bridges out, and serious erosion, especially of trails that run near creeks.

I think peak around where I am will be in a week to ten days. I love this time of year.

Pennsy has some awesome pics but what is with the bjscreensavers.com stamped on the photos? Is that site safe to visit. Is it Pennsy's site? Does Pennsy now reside in Pakistan?

I'll be enjoying the wonderful weather and fall colers all afternoon...picking up dog poop and mowing (hopefully for the last time this year).

We've only had .10 of an inch of rain this whole month so I don't think the colers will be too great.
