Autumn SplendorView MessagesAutumn Splendor “Here in southeast Pennsylvania, the leaves have just started to turn. How far along are the leaves where you are? How about in New Hampshire...anyone?” 9:56:14 PM 9/19/01 RE: Autumn Splendor “Here in Utah, the mountains are almost in full glory. Due to a couple of dry summers, the colors aren't as vibrant and the leaves are falling off the trees soon after changing color.” 10:00:33 PM 9/19/01 RE: Autumn Splendor “Here in Northern California things haven't changed much except for the days getting shorter, and things aren't blooming like crazy.” 11:07:52 PM 9/19/01 RE: Autumn Splendor “I just notice the first aspens and oaks in the Sandias above Albuquerque. Cottonwoods in town are starting to change.” 11:43:21 PM 9/19/01 RE: Autumn Splendor “Here in Chicago, no change, yet. Although it's been pretty dry, so imagine things will change quickly” 12:01:04 AM 9/20/01 RE: Autumn Splendor “New Hampshire was just at the brink of the leaves changing 2 weeks ago. We got a ways to go down here in Tennessee though.” 12:10:19 AM 9/20/01 RE: Autumn Splendor “Hey HOI, how are the Blue Ridge looking? Have they even started yet?” 7:15:52 AM 9/20/01 RE: Autumn Splendor “Fall is coming to Houston, I'm only having to mow my yard once a week.” 7:46:41 AM 9/20/01 RE: Autumn Splendor “Nothing much happening in western MA, yet. A few trees here and there, but trees under some sort of stress always turn earlier. I figure we're about 3 weeks from seeing any real color. Saw some spotty color along the Blue Ridge last week, a few pockets of trees and some low growth.” 7:47:41 AM 9/20/01 RE: Autumn Splendor “Some are beginning to turn here in the Bay Area, but I'm anxious to head to Tahoe to see the Aspen turn its rampant golden hue amongst the alpine laden mountainsides... I miss the awesome rainbow of colors in the midwest. Michigan Falls spell fresh applce cider & cinnamon donuts to me, and I wanna head back to the Franklin Cider Mill. While I've not been back East at this time of year, I understand you guys are a tough place to beat for Fall splendor...” 9:37:43 AM 9/20/01 RE: Autumn Splendor “I have a Maple tree in my yard that turns colors and drops its leaves before most trees in the neighborhood. Well...it's time to bust out the rake.” 9:43:03 AM 9/20/01 RE: Autumn Splendor “Not much going on in West Tennessee yet.. but the temperature is starting to drop.. bet I even have to mow my yard a few more times.. Hoping my trip to East Tennessee (Roan Mt 10/17-21) in October will be right about when it's peaking, or shortly thereafter.. :)” 10:10:56 AM 9/20/01 RE: Autumn Splendor “The aspens on the San Francisco Peaks near Flagstaff are turning now. I would say they will be their glory in about a week. Nothing much turning around town yet.” 10:11:08 AM 9/20/01 RE: Autumn Splendor “It'll be another month, here in Kentucky, before we see peak color.” 10:19:34 AM 9/20/01 RE: Autumn Splendor “About 20% changed here in Northern Wisconsin, though as mediaman noted, the first trees that have changed have lost their leaves soon after, so it may not appear quite that far along on a quick glance. But the pace is picking up. A good frost is needed. I'll be in the U.P. this weekend, so I'll see what's going on along Superior.” 10:25:00 AM 9/20/01 RE: Autumn Splendor “Hey mediaman, where in Utah are you? I'm heading up this weekend for a fall foliage road trip. I'll start at Kolob Res. in Zion National Park on Friday night and hopefully take a variety of backcountry roads to the Mt. Nebo Scenic Road on Saturday. Then make my way back to Vegas on Sunday. What do you think the colors will be like in those areas this weekend? Also, how crowded do you think the Mt. Nebo area campgrounds will be?” 11:23:21 AM 9/20/01 RE: Autumn Splendor “Here in Florida the leaves are, um, green but in a month or two they will be, er, um, green. I remember last fall when they were, well crap, green.” 11:33:00 AM 9/20/01 RE: Autumn Splendor “Here in south La. we usually start to see some dirty fall colors in late November. December's the "peak." A little earlier in cenral La. Heat and humidity often stick around till Christmas. That's why I head north. First trip of the new hiking year will be next week to Slickrock/Joyce Kilmer (NC). Should be a little bit of color at the higher elevations.” 4:33:44 PM 9/20/01 RE: Autumn Splendor “Hey, obi wan. How's it going? I was out this weekend, (MN Nort Woods) and although there are plenty of leaves on the ground, those on the tree are still green.” 5:07:54 PM 9/20/01 RE: Autumn Splendor “No color yet in WA, atleast not at ground level. Hubbie's co-workers have been called for duty, so he is oncall as a plumber at his job, no overnighters for us. I definitely want to get in one or two fall day hikes though. Fall is beautiful here, but we do lack the color red in our scenery.” 5:20:17 PM 9/20/01 RE: Autumn Splendor “I've read it all, it's black and white The spectrum made a shade I like. The crimson rays are ruby bright Technicolor light. Red! I want red, there's no substitute for red. Red! Paint it red, green ain't mean compared to red. You don't know what it does to me, My crimson intensity I'm haunted by the mystery, The mystey of red. Red knocks 'em dead, Some like it hot, I like it read. Red is my lover, got it covered Red is my number, sure as a coma Red is my drummer, and I hear red thunder Move over brother, Red's a motherfu...(cker) (Red! Red!) Thats' what I said... (Red! Red!) Come on to bed (Red! Red!) Gimme' that expensive spread..” 5:48:07 PM 9/20/01 RE: Autumn Splendor “Uh, let's see, we also lack the color......., too funny switchback.” 6:33:25 PM 9/20/01 RE: Autumn Splendor “yellow you say, okay, let's see... look at the stars look how they shine for you and everything you do yeah they were all yellow i came along i wrote a song for you and all the things you do and it was called yellow so then I took my turn oh what a thing to have done and it was all yellow your skin oh yeah your skin and bones turn into something beautiful and you know you know I love you so you know I love you so i swam across i jumped across for you oh what a thing to do ?cos you were all yellow i drew a line i drew a line for you oh what a thing to do and it was all yellow. and your skin oh yeah your skin and bones turn into something beautiful and you know for you i?d bleed myself dry for you i?d bleed myself dry it?s true look how they shine for you look how they shine for you look how they shine for look how they shine for you look how they shine for you look how they shine look at the stars look how they shine for you and all the things that you do or maybe a pretty orange... I was walking along, minding my business When out of an orange-colored sky Flash! Bam! Alakazam! Wonderful you came by I was humming a tune, drinking in sunshine When out of that orange-colored view Wham! Bam! Alakazam! I got a look at you One look and I yelled "Timber" "Watch out for flying glass" 'Cause the ceiling fell and the bottom fell out I went into a spin and I started to shout, "I've been hit, This is it, This is it!" I was walking along minding my business When love came and hit me in the eye Flash! Bam! Alakazam! Out of an orange-colored sky.” 6:49:10 PM 9/20/01 RE: Autumn Splendor “Ditto what colonialmiss said. They probably won't even start changing here for 2 more weeks.” 6:52:59 PM 9/20/01 RE: Autumn Splendor “Anger, he smiles, towering in shiny metallic purple armour Queen Jealousy, envy waits behind him Her fiery green gown sneers at the grassy ground Blue are the life-giving waters taken for granted, They quietly understand Once happy turquoise armies lay opposite ready, But wonder why the fight is on But they're all bold as love, yeah, they're all bold as love Yeah, they're all bold as love Just ask the axis My red is so confident that he flashes trophies of war, and ribbons of euphoria Orange is young, full of daring, But very unsteady for the first go round My yellow in this case is not so mellow In fact I'm trying to say it's frigthened like me And all these emotions of mine keep holding me from, eh, Giving my life to a rainbow like you But, I'm eh , yeah, I'm bold as love Yeah, yeah Well I'm bold, bold as love (hear me talking, girl) I'm bold as love Just ask the axis (he knows everything) Yeah, yeah, yeah! Jimi Hendrix, 1968” 6:59:03 PM 9/20/01 RE: Autumn Splendor “switchback, how daring to choose orange. You know oranges, poranges, nothing rhymes with oranges. I think that was said by H.R. Puff n Stuff. Yellow, so happens, my skin is an olive color, which tends to look yellowish in the winter when not tanned.” 7:02:53 PM 9/20/01 RE: Autumn Splendor “There's one thing I miss terribly about the East..fall color change. There is absolutely nothing like it anywhere else in the country, those of you in the midwest & west who haven't lived there, you can't possibly imagine the wonder & beauty... This from someone who often can only pity anyone not living in the Sierra's...” 7:16:52 PM 9/20/01 RE: Autumn Splendor “are you sure that's not jaundice LH? I am SO just kidding, but it was the first thing I thought of. the orange ditty was a Nat King Cole song. I cannot remember the group that did the yellow song and the red was from none other than the Red Rocker himself.” 9:15:50 PM 9/20/01 RE: Autumn Splendor “Wanderer, unless you are applying the Midwest tag only to the likes of Kansas and Nebraska, I'll stake the autumn splendor of the Northern Great Lakes forests against all comers, including New England. Them thars fightin' words...and our maple syrup is pretty dang fine, too, LOL.” 10:52:23 PM 9/20/01 RE: Autumn Splendor “Reptiles, I'm in SLC. I just talked to a co-worker who hiked Mt. Nebo two weeks ago. He said that loop is a beautiful drive with lots of campgrounds. When he was there, hardly anyone was camping. The leaves were changing quite a bit already but he thinks they should be at their peak right now. If you do any hiking he suggests you take water because there's not much there. I'm assuming that goes for camping, too. I'm on call at work for the next two weeks so I can't leave the valley. I'm afraid I might miss the colors this year.” 11:25:34 PM 9/20/01 RE: Autumn Splendor “NE Ioway leaves are definitely started. We had a dry, dry summer, so I think once they change here, they won't be hanging around long. So those of you dissing the Midwest, does this surprise ya?? It's beautiful here!! Yellow River State Forest” 7:59:53 AM 9/21/01 RE: Autumn Splendor “Thanks mediaman! Sorry pekka but Vermont's maple syrup is rated the world's best year after year.” 11:10:57 AM 9/21/01 RE: Autumn Splendor “Are you saying there's a judging prejudice against Wisconsin maple syrup just because when you pour it you get a head on it ? You can't expect us to just let all that plumbing sit idle the rest of the year...we've got Oktoberfest to get ready for, LOL.” 11:18:39 AM 9/21/01 RE: Autumn Splendor “Try to remember the kind of September When Life was slow & oh so mellow When grass was green & grain was yellow When you were a tender & callow fellow Try to remember & if you remember, Then follow” 11:54:58 AM 9/21/01 RE: Autumn Splendor “Yellow is the color of my true love's hair In the mornin', when we rise In the mornin', when we rise That's the time, that's the time, I love the best Blue is the color of the sky In the mornin', when we rise In the mornin', when we rise That's the time, that's the time, I love the best Green is the color of the sparklin' corn In the mornin', when we rise In the mornin', when we rise That's the time, that's the time, I love the best Mellow is the feeling that I get When I see her -- um-hmm When I see her -- uh-huh That's the time, that's the time, I love the best Freedom is a word I rarely use Without thinkin' -- um-hmm Without thinkin' -- uh-huh Of the time, yes the time, when I been low” 12:01:35 PM 9/21/01 RE: Autumn Splendor “Too funny. Yes, that golden time of year is on it's way. Which still makes me wish I was in Vermont because a local brewery (Magic Hat Brewing Co.) has a really good pumpkin ale that they only brew in the fall.” 12:01:38 PM 9/21/01 RE: Autumn Splendor “Punkin' Ale? %^)” 12:02:48 PM 9/21/01 RE: Autumn Splendor “The MudCat Café DigiTrad Lyrics Search PowerSearch for 'orange' at: MudCat SuperSearch Sorry, no documents were found which match your query. Note: 'yellow', 169 hits. 'red', 629. 'green', 888.” 12:34:54 PM 9/21/01 RE: Autumn Splendor “Went for a bike ride on the Bizz Johnson Trail in NE Cal (rails-to-trail). Leaves are just barely starting to turn. Because of the drought they seem to be changing from green directly to brown. Bummer. Otherwise the weather is perfect -- 80's during the day, 30's at night.” 12:43:49 PM 9/21/01 RE: Autumn Splendor “Our popple/aspen show few signs of changing yet, while the maples are full speed ahead. I've started wondering if it's because the aspen really got hit hard early in the summer by tent caterpillars and had to releaf. Some aspen seem to have barely gotten the second set of leaves up to full size; maybe they just want to churn out a bit more chlorophyl before dropping.” 7:05:06 PM 9/21/01 RE: Autumn Splendor “REPTILES I picked up some Maple Syrup in NH a couple of weeks ago. Fantastic stuff!!!! I'd like to try Vermont Maple Syrup if it's supposed to be better!” 7:11:29 PM 9/21/01 RE: Autumn Splendor “walkindude, don't be too quick to jump. I assure you the Michigan and Wisconsin syrup is da bomb, too! Maybe we should have a TTer pancake breakfast sometime and everyone brings a bit of home sweet home to the table. (Cranberry harvesting is just about to get underway in the Wisconsin bogs, so fresh relish soon.)” 7:28:35 PM 9/21/01 RE: Autumn Splendor “I grew up in Michigan and I can assure you, Michigan maple is the best . As to a previous post I made, I was wrong. On the drive home today I noticed that a few of the leaves have changed color. It's not a couple weeks off after all.” 7:34:41 PM 9/21/01 RE: Autumn Splendor “I was in upstate (northeastern) PA this weekend (Rickett's Glen State Park.) In some place the leaves are 50% turned over; in other place maybe 10%.” 9:43:09 AM 9/24/01 RE: Autumn Splendor “Drove across the middle of the Upper Peninsula on Saturday, returning Sunday. I could notice the difference between the two days. Color change ranged from 20% to 80%, averaging about 50%, depending on type of trees and how far north. Got nice and cold last night, so I expect that it will continue apace. This coming weekend should see it reaching its peak in some places in Superior Country.” 10:01:21 AM 9/24/01 RE: Autumn Splendor “Got back from central Utah last night. Everything in the mountains around 7000-10,000 ft. is in full color. Very fun and beautiful trip. Trip report soon, pictures next week sometime.” 1:54:49 PM 9/24/01 RE: Autumn Splendor “Here in S.W. Colorado the leaves are a 9.3 on a scale of 1 to 10. Went into the Wimenuche yesterday to fly fish but mostly took pictures.” 2:29:03 PM 9/24/01 RE: Autumn Splendor “We are at the zenith of autumn color here. The leaves are falling steadily, even when there is no breeze. My kids have been making leaf piles and jumping in them all day. I love this time of year. Tonight we are supposed to have heavy rain, which will probably knock a good many more leaves down. Too bad autumn color and temperatures can't last several months here. This is the best backpacking weather!” 3:59:24 PM 10/14/01 RE: Autumn Splendor “Last weekend (1st weekend in Oct, Columbus day weekend) was phenomenal in northern NH. Here in suburbs of Philly, definitely not at peak yet.” 7:22:26 PM 10/14/01 RE: Autumn Splendor “yeah, NJ looked really nice this weekend. It made me wish I was going hiking with the PA trip, but I'm going to a BSA trip that will have me car camping on a field.” 8:50:30 PM 10/14/01
