After trying it a few times the changes become instinct, and the result is usually more comical. For example when someone cuts me off on the road, I'm likely to yell out something, in complete anger, like "Cheese & Rice" instead of Jesus Christ. And, I'll actually say the letter "f", or call someone an "F'er" verus using the word, and get an extra laugh out of that. I'll even go a little retro and dig up slang that's decades old and not considered very hip, but it's funny around the kids...I'll use "jumpinjeehossafats" and stuff like that. I'm always looking for new ones. The old Batman & Robin show is a great source for some amusing expletives: "Holy_____ Batman".” 1:48:40 PM 9/20/01 RE: Foul Mouth TTers “Side note: I find Fudge Sundaes to be a fairly satisfying replacement for the f-word.” 6:22:02 PM 9/20/01 RE: Foul Mouth TTers “This is one of those "you had to be there stories" but here goes. My mom & dad cursed in Italian, because us children didn't uderstand, but we did know which word was the curse word. My little sister picked out one of the words and asked what it meant. My mom said it meant "stringbeans", so my sister prompty kept saying, pass the _____, I'd like more _____. I don't curse anywhere around people or kids. I try to keep it to a minimum in general.” 6:31:35 PM 9/20/01 RE: Foul Mouth TTers “Rad, I don't think anybody the connection with the Judas Priest songs except Baume66. I've worked in a factory for over 17 years now. Cussing is a way of life. Some manage to not cuss much but they better not even act offended of they'll really get an ear full. I can turn off the cussing as easily as I can fire it up. My Dad is also a professional cusser. I learned from him and even started an early age. I still never get Vulgur around him but it has slipped before. I liked the comment made by Tom Terrific about "Cussing like a Teamster". I am a Teamster!” 7:37:15 PM 9/20/01 RE: Foul Mouth TTers “WD you are so full of it. I spent 6 days with ya and narry a nasty word came from ya. Stop it with the bad boy bad boy thing.......” 8:00:56 PM 9/20/01 RE: Foul Mouth TTers “My greatgrandaunt who is in her 90's regularly cries 'JESSSUSH CHRIST!' everytime she sees me. This is what I think of when I hear people 'using that name in vain'... For someone to be so old, religious and close to death. It's funny. I forget everyone else has not had my experiences though.. LOVE THYN ENEMY - isn't that what Jesus taught?” 8:02:18 PM 9/20/01 RE: Foul Mouth TTers “Right on Biz!” 8:04:31 PM 9/20/01 RE: Foul Mouth TTers “LH- My little sister picked up something that starts with a 'D' and is another name for cucumber... None of us told her what it meant, either Ü” 8:05:26 PM 9/20/01 RE: Foul Mouth TTers “Sirpete You gotta remember my language as we were driving through Connecticut. Those people are NUTS!!!!!” 8:12:05 PM 9/20/01 RE: Foul Mouth TTers “yeah you got me there Rabbit......and how about them M@ssholes LOL” 8:14:45 PM 9/20/01 RE: Foul Mouth TTers “LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!! I thought you were gonna climb out of the truck and beat that one guy to death!!!!! LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!” 8:16:06 PM 9/20/01 RE: Foul Mouth TTers “THATS SO AMAZING!!” 8:17:57 PM 9/20/01 RE: Foul Mouth TTers “hey Wd how about that fat@ss in the caddy with the cigar stuck in his face. that was too much man” 8:41:47 PM 9/20/01 RE: Foul Mouth TTers “'I do find that nothing calms me down when angry like a well composed compound swear word, so it does have it's time and place. It can also intimidate an inanimate object into cooperation very well. It's like verbal WD-40. Violin 10:57:01 AM 9/20/01' I need some of this stuff for my 1st aid kit. If you listen REAL hard to Violin, he's hilarious!!” 8:46:15 PM 9/20/01 RE: Foul Mouth TTers “You oughta try driving in Southern California.” 8:48:58 PM 9/20/01 RE: Foul Mouth TTers “He gave you the "thumbs up" as you were cussing him out!!!! TOO FUNNY!!!” 8:49:22 PM 9/20/01 RE: Foul Mouth TTers “It has been said, "The tongue is a restless evil full of deadly poison. Who can tame it?" - A rhetorical question, really. Personally, when I eek out a profane word, it comes from frustration or anger. It happens. When it does, I see something inside that I don't like. I see a flaw of character. It's disappointing that I didn't choose to vent or channel my emotion in another way. Profanity is a method of locution or inflection of words and that's it. What matters is what's inside. Words come from that. In my view, if my words are profane, that's probably where my heart is too. I've heard that our emotions and how we express them is a window to our soul.” 1:41:09 AM 9/21/01 RE: Foul Mouth TTers “Using our Lord's name in vain is off limits. That just doesn't happen.” 1:47:01 AM 9/21/01 RE: Foul Mouth TTers “Y'all need to brush your teeth more often while on the trail...stinky poo.” 3:01:14 AM 9/21/01 RE: Foul Mouth TTers “Back to the Jimmy Carter dilemma......... Is lusting in your heart any better than doing the actual deed? Therefore, is "fudge stick" really much better when your mind is saying THE OTHER WORD?? Yes, I agree it shows some restraint.... however......... Jimmy sure believes that lusting in your heart is wrong.” 7:04:49 AM 9/21/01 RE: Foul Mouth TTers “I just wonder if I met Jesus today, if he would argue these semantics. Or if he would focus on the larger picture.” 8:10:37 AM 9/21/01 RE: Foul Mouth TTers “Biz, are you saying then, that should you run into the Savior at the Second Coming, he won't mind if, in your surprise, you shout out, "Jesus Christ!"?” 9:58:19 AM 9/21/01 RE: Foul Mouth TTers “I don't know, pekka. If I saw all those helium-filled blow-up dolls floating up in the air, there's No Telling what I might've said.” 10:35:35 AM 9/21/01 RE: Foul Mouth TTers “On the other side of the coin, when Jesus went into the Temple courts with a cat of nine tails and started kicking over the tables of the money changers do you think he just maybe, possibly let lose a few good zingers?” 10:50:17 AM 9/21/01 RE: Foul Mouth TTers “but was he saying, "Dad damn you!"?” 10:51:26 AM 9/21/01 RE: Foul Mouth TTers “actually, he probably was. hmmm...” 10:52:05 AM 9/21/01 RE: Foul Mouth TTers “LOL Dude! It is funny that the same gesture that means "thumbs up" to some, also means "up yours" in other cultures.” 11:01:24 AM 9/21/01 RE: Foul Mouth TTers “He wouldn't have taken G-d's name in vain but I can think of a few other good words he might have used. What would Jesus have said when he was mad? "Oh Jezuz Chri...oh, wait a second. That's me!" LOL!” 11:03:22 AM 9/21/01 RE: Foul Mouth TTers “As a kid, I always liked Johnny Carson's bits as "Karnak." He always had his goofy insults of Ed in reply to Ed's inane comments. These days, we'd expect, "Ed, you dumb sh!t" with a bleep, and they won't bleep that much longer probably.” 11:15:07 AM 9/21/01 RE: Foul Mouth TTers “Is there any one that doesn't want me talking about sex?” 5:13:12 PM 9/21/01 RE: Foul Mouth TTers “Let me rephrase, is there any one that is dirrectly anoyed, and afraid for there well being?” 5:21:24 PM 9/21/01 RE: Foul Mouth TTers “Most of this just comes down to whether or not you believe, personally, that you should take "reasonable" precautions to not offend your fellow inhabitants of planet earth. We could argue forever that someone might be more sensitive than they "should" be (whose standards, anyway?). COMMON COURTESY dictates that we not use foul language when we don't "need" to. If that's the only way you know to communicate, then go-ahead. I'm not claiming to never use foul language, but I think that when I do, I can "justify?" or at least explain why I did, (example - just smashed my finger w a hammer), it wasn't just "for fun". When I discovered this site early on, I initially wanted to get some of my Boy Scouts to log in & check it out, as there ARE a lot of knowledgeable people here posting some good info. After spending some time here, however, I'd NEVER recommend this site to impressionable teenagers, the topics are just too far-reaching. Not wrong or incorrect, and I'm not passing judgement, just saying that this site is not appropriate for youth. And, to me, that's very, very sad...” 5:48:38 PM 9/21/01 RE: Foul Mouth TTers “Man, this site is the least of those Scout's worries.” 6:00:10 PM 9/21/01 RE: Foul Mouth TTers “Lemme rephrase that: This site should be the least of your worries for those scouts. Plus, I doubt they would really care about the non-backpacking related threads.” 6:06:27 PM 9/21/01 RE: Foul Mouth TTers “null” 6:09:23 PM 9/21/01 RE: Foul Mouth TTers “Rosey, I agree, it is the least of my worries today, I was referring to the days BEFORE Sept. 11. And if you think for one minute that you could direct a group of teenage boys to a site like this, tell them to ONLY access the sites that were gear / trip related and not any others, then you've forgotten what it's like to be a teenager. Plus, if you notice the usual thread degeneration here, a thread that starts out as a "gear" or "trip" thread usually becomes something else VERY quickly. Again, that's not necessarily "bad"...just not what you want to direct kids toward. I still remember a thread that Ice Tea started awhile back where he was complaining about not getting a leadership position in his troop, or, not getting some rank advancement. Given what I've seen from him, I wouldn't promote him either, or, put him in a position of responsibilty. The reason? He doesn't exhibit leadership qualities with his excessive abuse of language, etc etc. He IS NOT a good role model, and should not be propmoted through the ranks, IMHO. Is some of that because he thinks it's "O.K." because "we" all do it??? You have to ask yourself what impact you have on the youth. They develop their attitudes from what they see the "cool" adults doing...” 6:19:55 PM 9/21/01 RE: Foul Mouth TTers “Wander, I couldn't disagree more. I like this site precisely because it is wild, irreverant, and often profane. There are a TON of boring, mild-mannered outdoor forums out there for the faint at heart. This site goes after hiking and life in general with GUSTO. No holds barred and take no prisoners. This site has red blood not milquetoast flowing through its veins. In my opinion, adults who beg others not to swear and to self-censor what they talk about are fuking babies who've never grown up. The "protect the virginal teenage ears" argument is a bunch of crap! Such adults are just trying to protect their own immature minds. Say what you like, and let others do the same.” 6:28:38 PM 9/21/01 RE: Foul Mouth TTers “Right. But you're thinking that they think we're cool. I think, they would think of us as a bunch boring dorks. They're probably more excited about checking out boobs in the latest skin mag a friend has, playing the newest video games on someone's Playstation, who's got a fake ID that can score them some booze and what band is singing that poppy tune they want to blast on their friend's car stereo then they are about what a bunch of "old" people have to say about backpacking and sometimes other facets of life. They just don't have the attention span for the type of discussion, both good and bad, that occurs here. Really I know. I was a teenager not that long ago.” 6:31:29 PM 9/21/01 RE: Foul Mouth TTers “You can't leave people in the closet and away from cussing till their 18 - 21 and then shock the hell out of 'em. I was cussing pretty regular when I was Ice Tea's age. I don't think reading cuss words is worse than hearing them on a movie. Besides, He from Jersey! Those words a prolly taught in Spelling class. After all, He spells cuss words better than most other words. "He (Ice Tea) doesn't exhibit leadership qualities with his excessive abuse of language, etc etc." What about Leaders like Gen. George Patton? He was a fine example of a man with a foul mouth but could kick serious butt on a battlefield! I rest my case.” 6:47:19 PM 9/21/01 RE: Foul Mouth TTers “You're not doing anyone a favor by sheltering them from the world. Better that they learn how to deal with it when they have the safety net of their parents/mentors than when they are on their own.” 6:58:36 PM 9/21/01 RE: Foul Mouth TTers 7:04:34 PM 9/21/01 RE: Foul Mouth TTers “I am WAYYY too inflamed to respond to this right now, I can't believe that so many of you can sit back & say "Oh..... that's OK,,, that's "real world"... Everyone ELSE has a problem..." Do you not understand your RESPONSIBILITIES and OBLIGATIONS as a HUMAN BEING? It is YOUR job to try to ELEVATE everyone around you, NOT bring them down... Raise your standards people...stop throwing stoines at everyone else, look inward for a change.” 7:55:38 PM 9/21/01 RE: Foul Mouth TTers “I don't need to change. I like me just the way I am. I don't feel like I'm less of a man either because I cuss.” 8:24:29 PM 9/21/01 RE: Foul Mouth TTers “I'd never promote anyone to cuss if they don't want to. It's fine with me either way. It don't offend me if it's comming from a man, woman, teenager, or old person. And like I said earlier, I can watch my language around people that don't wanna hear it or their kids. I'm simply saying, I do it and I'm not offended by it. I do draw the line at GD. I don't go there.” 8:30:48 PM 9/21/01 RE: Foul Mouth TTers “Ever seen Pulp Fiction, South Park, Full Metal Jacket, or The Big Labowski? Those movies are AWESOME! Could you enjoy them as much without the cussing? I didn't think so.” 8:46:41 PM 9/21/01 RE: Foul Mouth TTers “ 9:07:28 PM 9/21/01 RE: Foul Mouth TTers “ ”9:10:11 PM 9/21/01 RE: Foul Mouth TTers “Well, wanderer, I'm with you. I wanted to encourage my son to read here, but have chosen not to. We all become like those we spend the most time with. It isn't that my son would read anything here that he hasn't heard elsewhere. I just don't want him talking the way some of you write. I want him, as I expect from myself, to conduct himself with dignity, to communicate with manners and class, and to treat others with respect. It baffles me that anyone would call that "immature" and "milquetoast."” 9:48:52 PM 9/21/01 RE: Foul Mouth TTers “It's not so much trying to censor your kids, they will hear/see way too much from places you cannot control. The point is to not promote such things. There is nothing more disgusting to me than little kids cussing like a sailor at their parents. How can they get away with that? I would have been beat into next week for that when I was a kid! walkindude - those are great movies, but not ones I would want my kids watching. I would be very suprised to learn that steve hiker has kids. It all changes when you have some of your very own that you are totally responsible for. Well, I guess that maybe for some it does not change. Sad, truly sad indeed.” 10:33:07 PM 9/21/01 RE: Foul Mouth TTers “Aw, Christ. Give me a fooking break. Like I give a sh!t. GET OUT OF MY FOOKING CHAIR (only those from LR 2001, 10 day trip will know what THIS means). Need more? I was an only child whose only friends were guys. Who swore. I had an uncle who was a longshoreman. Questions? I had an uncle who was of the old school when it came to breaking his horses. Explain? Since I was old enough to spit with the boys, I learned to talk like them. No excuses. Just fact. I can be decorous when the situation demands, but if pissed, I can swear in several languages, and a few I invent. Don't like the heat? GET OUT OF MY FOOKING KITCHEN.” 11:46:58 PM 9/21/01
