“Just as an observation, there was minimal use of swear words when I first starting posting here three years ago. It seems to have steadily increased for some reason.

Regarding swearing in movies. I saw the movie, "Finding Forrester" featuring my hero, Sean Connery. IMHO, they could have left most of the swear words out (Language: F-word 2; S-word 16; Jesus or Christ 2; GD 3; A..hole 3) without hurting the movie and had an awesome movie that younger teens could see and enjoy. It would be an awesome movie to show in high schools, but it never will because of the language. (Side comment: In some movies the swearing is just portraying actual behavior. I suppose that is somewhat understandable. e.g. Traffic).

Many years ago my wife and I decided to go see a dinner show, so I went out and naively bought tickets for "A Chorus Line". The food was good and so was most of the first act. Then it simply turned into a hollow glorification of the F-word and people struggling with their homosexuality. What a total waste of good food and good dancing.

Regarding impact, I don't think anyone could add a swear word to anything they say or write and enhance the impact with me (except, of course, when addressing llamas in their native tongue). Fifteen years in an automobile assembly plant has numbed me to histrionics, grand-standing, colorful language, and getting chewed out. I also saw a lot of people become very successful without ever using a swear word there.

I am a sailor and most of us don't use the bad language you think we do..the only time I let out a stream of profanity a mile long was when the boom came around on an unintentional jibe and caught me on the side of the head. I do not like the f-word and agree it has more emphasis when used in moderation.

With Trail Talk we have managed to meet great hikers, and talk to them on a personal basis. We even had two TTers that met on TT get married. What I have tried to tell you, is if Matt was to cut out all the non backpacking talk, the site would become boring and dull. I hope that this has enlightened you in to my thinking of this topic.”
