Beneath the Veil

“Anyone catch this documentary about life in Afghanistan under the Taliban? They showed it last night on CNN. It was really powerful. If you can catch it, I think it is worthwhile viewing.

I realize it was propaganda but the images of Kabul were unbelievable. War torn does not adequately describe the place. Most ancient ruins are in better shape.

It was filmed by a woman named Saira Shah who went around with the Revolutionary Association of the Women of Afghanistan (RAWA) and presented some of the atrocities committed by the Taliban against it?s own people, primarily women who are not permitted to work even if they are widows with children.

There was an interview with the Afghani foreign minister whom when questioned how they could use the soccer stadium built by the west as a place for public executions, replied ?build us a place for executions and we will use the stadium for soccer?.

It really made me think of post WW1 Germany, looted and left to the psychotics who promised an end to the humiliation and retribution and the horrors that followed.
