At our annual family camporee of 2000, an uncle of mine was wearing a USS (I can't recall the name of the destroyer - d'oh!) baseball cap. He is my dad's brother-in-law. My dad asked "You were on the (blah blah)?" And Uncle John answered in the affirmative.
"We crossed your wake many times off Okinawa in '45" says my dad.
"Hmm" says John.

They had known each other for 50 years, and NOT ONCE before had discussed the war
...too painful.

I later researched the destroyer that John was on. In one battle, they were struck numerous times by suicide planes and had to abandon ship. The ship suffered tremendous damage and casualties, but was saved, nonetheless. My uncle was back on board within a matter of days.”
