All right: Everyone smile and spend mone y.View MessagesAll right: Everyone smile and spend money. “I went to Lake Michigan this weekend for a little fun. But all the radio stations are playing subdued music and patriotic songs. While I was sitting by the lake, I read an article in the paper about how the tragedy will affect fashion. Apparently, dark colors are in and sexy is out. And then, of course, everyone has decided to pull their money out of the stock market and stop buying things. How does the terrorist win? By getting inside our heads. Few of us will have any role in actually bombing or apprehending these people. Fewer still will ever be affected by an attack. We can help, though, by smiling, spending money and living our lives. Damn the terrorists. Let's have some fun.” 10:02:11 PM 9/23/01 RE: All right: Everyone smile and spend money. “Oh, I am ALREADY with you. And since my birthday is next weekend I say, spend it on me! New gear, new gear, new gear.” 10:10:32 PM 9/23/01 RE: All right: Everyone smile and spend money. “i bought some beer. and i smiled.” 10:15:08 PM 9/23/01 RE: All right: Everyone smile and spend money. “Spent $250 bucks this weekend on landscaping stuff. I wasn't smiling though - it's hard for me to get excited about 20 yards of bark chips, etc.” 10:26:47 PM 9/23/01 RE: All right: Everyone smile and spend money. “I just ordered a couple of things from Peak 1. Also some maps & a book from adventeroustravler.com. I'm doing my part. F*#k terrorist!” 10:35:12 PM 9/23/01 RE: All right: Everyone smile and spend money. “I first went to school to study fashion merch. We had to study fashion history and it is true. War often makes a difference in clothing style.” 10:36:28 PM 9/23/01 RE: All right: Everyone smile and spend money. “That's cause a lot of people wind up wearing camoflage.” 10:42:21 PM 9/23/01 RE: All right: Everyone smile and spend money. “Starting to sound like "A Brave New World", if you haven't read it, one of the core philosophies of the New World was good citizens were good consumers. People that made their own stuff or fixed their own stuff were considered anti social and bad citizens.” 10:45:53 PM 9/23/01 RE: All right: Everyone smile and spend money. “Its not a brave new world until I get paid in soma, get touchy-feelies in the theater, and have escalators on my favorite trails. Outside of cliff bars, I haven't been a very good consumer/citizen.” 10:57:00 PM 9/23/01 RE: All right: Everyone smile and spend money. “Soma for everyone!!” 10:59:10 PM 9/23/01 RE: All right: Everyone smile and spend money. “Gimme soma dat!” 11:00:17 PM 9/23/01 RE: All right: Everyone smile and spend money. “What's soma?” 11:01:23 PM 9/23/01 RE: All right: Everyone smile and spend money. “A drug that makes you happy that you get from the Government. People got it along with their pay.” 11:03:48 PM 9/23/01 RE: All right: Everyone smile and spend money. “I bought some cheap beer, and I smiled. If anyone wants to stake me to my old age, I'll smile more! Does anyone still sell "Ripple"?” 11:10:27 PM 9/23/01 RE: All right: Everyone smile and spend money. “I take it this was in the days before Nancy Regan said, "Just say no".” 11:14:10 PM 9/23/01 RE: All right: Everyone smile and spend money. “Yeah, but Nancy was past 70 when she said that. She was all wrinkled and wore out by then.” 11:32:10 PM 9/23/01 RE: All right: Everyone smile and spend money. “Rode hard and put up wet?” 11:53:28 PM 9/23/01 RE: All right: Everyone smile and spend money. “Reformed you were on my side of the state and you didnt let me Know?? What is this??? We could have hung out. I would have spent money on you. Im hurt!” 11:57:01 PM 9/23/01 RE: All right: Everyone smile and spend money. “My spending habits havn't change one bit. In fact, I'd say it's picked up. I have a balanced portfolio where half goes into the market and half into bonds. I'm thinking about moving it all to the market in an effort to help (be it ever so meager!). The ugliness of 9/11/01 can never surpass the beauty that still remains in the world.” 12:05:26 AM 9/24/01 RE: All right: Everyone smile and spend money. “What money? It's disappearing on the stock market. I refuse to sell low though.” 3:42:45 AM 9/24/01 RE: All right: Everyone smile and spend money. “to borrow... Eat, drink, be merry, go shopping and give THANKS.....in case tomorrow doesnt happen....... twas payday friday........i treated my feets to new softball cleats and got six new pairs of contacts for better hiking and kayaking experiences.... a kick a.... new pair of pruning shears......and Bob Dylans new CD...... for these things i am smiling big and am truly thankful..” 8:17:21 AM 9/24/01 RE: All right: Everyone smile and spend money. “Regarding spending money: On Sept 16 our church offering was up about 20-25% over normal. In addition, there was an special un-announced offering that will be sent to New York for relief. That raised $36,000! The drop in tourism really hurts California. Many people come here on vacation and business and do a lot of shopping and dining while they are here. The trickle-down effect makes me nervous. Just a side note: When my parents owned their Dairy Queen in the 70s, it was on the way up to the mountain resorts. Lots of people used to stop in on the way up or down the mountain. He always said that he needed to build up the local clientele just in case there was a drop in tourism. So he did. When the gas rationing hit in 1974 the mountain traffic dropped way off. The local business kept him healthy. Consequently, ever since them I have been scared to invest in anything that depends on travellers.” 11:28:24 AM 9/24/01 RE: All right: Everyone smile and spend money. “My spending is way up, $650 for new tires alone! I'm looking to drop every free penny I have in the bottoming out stock market, then in 30 years I can retire like a king.” 1:45:34 PM 9/24/01 RE: All right: Everyone smile and spend money. “Will the market recover to its previous marks above 10,000? I hope it does because right now the fund I am in (459) is buying like crazy. I don't know what they are buying but it looks like alot.” 3:42:19 PM 9/24/01 RE: All right: Everyone smile and spend money. “Friday was my second payday of the new school year, had the afternoon free, drove to a nearby resort town (that has gear stores of course) and a tavern with German and Irish beer on tap. My missus made out well -- turned out there was a one-day only 20% off on everything, including sale items, so she got some more Patagonia silkweight and a pair of canoeing/gardening waterproof slip-on shoes, and a little Swiss Army Knife with her alma mater's logo (what was a U of Mich knife doing in Badgerland?!); I gave myself an extra Camelbak reservoir and some of the right-angle adapters for the bite valves. To celebrate spending the square of 12 on not a very big bag of stuff, we went across the street and quaffed a couple cold ones.” 3:47:21 PM 9/24/01 RE: All right: Everyone smile and spend money. “I have a neice and a godson for whom I started educational IRAs (EIRAs) last year. The max tax-sheltered amount that can be placed per year in an EIRA is $ 500 (that's tax sheltered for the beneficiary, NOT the investor). I had been waiting all year for "the right time" to put another $ 500 in both kids' accounts. I finally did it on last Friday. I actually think the market will bounce back. It may take some time, but I see the current market conditions as a golden opportunity to make a few bucks in the long run. As for those stocks of mine that lost ~ 20 % last week, I always planned to go long on them, anyway, so this hasn't really affected my plans for my portfolio (except to make me more agressive, perhaps). We could start a pool for predicting the DOW and/or the NASDAQ for (say) Sept. 11th, 2003. My guesses: DOW: 11,500 NASDAQ: 2,250” 4:10:12 PM 9/24/01 RE: All right: Everyone smile and spend money. “Buy low. Sell high.” 2:36:39 AM 9/25/01 RE: All right: Everyone smile and spend money. “I don't believe any predictions about the stock market. Word does have it that stocks were overvalued anyway, and that's something you don't want to hear. I have money in stocks, but it's money I don't need to use, so I'm letting it ride. It's a buyers market now, if only I had more cash. Phil, I don't like investing in anything to do with entertainment either. Your dad was very wise in his outlook for his store.” 3:02:40 AM 9/25/01 RE: All right: Everyone smile and spend money. “Didn't sell anything on the market, hanging on for the ride, maybe shifting some bonds to stocks when things settle down. I wonder what NYC municipal bonds are like. Drove to Taos and spent the night in a B and B, bought cheap souvenirs for our 6 y/o and fancy trinkets, and joined the art tourists in the restaurants. May sell my truck and camper replace it with something like an Outback, better when I have to drive to work and dependable to the trailhead.” 7:42:51 AM 9/25/01 RE: All right: Everyone smile and spend money. “if i had more disposable dough......i would trade my old subaru loyale in for an outback and hit the road.... "you may say i'm a dreamer, but i'm not the only one" j lennon” 7:58:40 AM 9/25/01 RE: All right: Everyone smile and spend money. “Ford has come out with 0% financing on everything they make. The old pickup is starting to look even older....I may have to check out the deal on a little Ranger pickup. Or I could just get the new doors installed on the house before all our heat leaks out this winter. Houses sure get in the way of gear.” 11:17:15 AM 9/25/01 RE: All right: Everyone smile and spend money. “You nailed that house thing pekka. I'll probably bring Home Depot's EPS in good this quarter.” 11:43:25 AM 9/25/01 RE: All right: Everyone smile and spend money. “Rockbuck - I hear you. My wife and I bought a "fixer-upper" in '95. For the next two years, we got to feel that they should just take the "Depot" part of their name off, and just call it "Home," since we spent so much time in their store.” 11:48:12 AM 9/25/01 RE: All right: Everyone smile and spend money. “LOL Forrest, I know that feeling.” 11:56:47 AM 9/25/01 RE: All right: Everyone smile and spend money. “I bought 5 cans of Fosters for a friend's 50th birthday this weekend (a can/decade). Come to think of it, I actually bought 6 but drank one myself! Cheers!” 12:06:06 PM 9/25/01 RE: All right: Everyone smile and spend money. “I just spent 8K on a front porch for my house. Home Depot (or spending the day installing roofing) is a lousy substitute for the woods on a fall weekend! I did just order two new dog packs for the kids. These packs look great on the website, and they just went on sale. You guys with dogs might want to check it out at: WolfPacks Anybody use these packs?” 12:23:17 PM 9/25/01 RE: All right: Everyone smile and spend money. “Aero, will you be my fwiend? BTW- my b-day is next week and I'm turning 90! See then buddy!” 12:44:25 PM 9/25/01 RE: All right: Everyone smile and spend money. “LOL Nigal- Hey, it gets better. I went with another friend on the Almost Annual Birthday Hike for his 50th a few weeks ago. I lugged 8 cans of Guiness up to 11,000' for the SOB! If someone could figure out how to freeze-dry that stuff, they'd make a bundle. %>P” 1:05:01 PM 9/25/01 RE: All right: Everyone smile and spend money. “I believe it was Jesus who said, ?No greater love hath one for another than the man that will lug beer at high altitude for his brother.? Or something like that.” 1:17:14 PM 9/25/01 RE: All right: Everyone smile and spend money. “Isn't he the guy who turned water into wine?” 1:19:34 PM 9/25/01 RE: All right: Everyone smile and spend money. “Aero, yeah and it was the end of a week-long wedding celebration! In those days, a wedding celebration was for one week! Suppose that might offend some folks, but I did my research.” 12:32:08 AM 9/27/01 RE: All right: Everyone smile and spend money. “"Suppose that might offend some folks, but I did my research." Not in the least. There is strong evidence that the wedding was his own.” 12:57:56 AM 9/27/01 RE: All right: Everyone smile and spend money. “If you REALLY want to do the patriotic thing according to calnatv, everyone should spend their money on buying guns...that will really make you feel safe and put a smile on yer face. ;-)” 2:32:47 AM 9/27/01 RE: All right: Everyone smile and spend money. “We tried to spend money. I got the giggles about the whole thing last night. The boyfriend decided we needed a new bed because his back hurt. OK .... so he buys one. We move the old one downstairs to one bedroom and the one that had been in the downstairs bedroom to a different bedroom. Two nights and two backaches for me later we return the new bed and move the old bed back upstairs. I counted them last night--for both mattresses and box springs there were 10 moves.” 1:18:18 PM 9/27/01 RE: All right: Everyone smile and spend money. “I saw on the news that you can get a 7 day Carribian cruise for under $500! Wish I had some vacation time left...and the $500 too.” 2:41:56 PM 9/27/01 RE: All right: Everyone smile and spend money. “We just booked our rented car for our trip to New York for Thanksgiving. I'm visiting my mom & relative, but will do my usual drive around the city. I think that when I pass the WTC, every hair on my body will stand up straight from the horror.” 2:57:03 PM 9/27/01 Invest in the stock market “Raytheon corporation makes cruise missiles and radar systems for aircraft. Northrop-Grumman makes high tech electronic sensors and optics for the military. ATK is the largest supplier of ammunition to the DOD. Invest now and make money on bin Laden's misfortune.” 3:02:09 PM 9/27/01 RE: All right: Everyone smile and spend money. “Yep spock thats how I feel( sarcasm). What a wierdo. I went out and got new tires for the van with my tax refund check. It was supposed to be for paying down the C.Cards but that never happens” 3:10:11 PM 9/27/01 RE: All right: Everyone smile and spend money. “Ah yes, the famous $300 tax refund for every tax-paying American. At least that was how it was sold to the public. Yet millions of Americans were disappointed by either no refund or a significantly smaller one than expected. Score one for Bush for a sneak attack with deception.” 10:27:21 PM 9/28/01 RE: All right: Everyone smile and spend money. “That's funny? I don't know one American that got less than was promised, and only one that is still waiting( I just got mine as promised) Wow I'm really out of touch. Where do get your sources spock? I need to be better informed” 11:51:49 PM 9/28/01
