RE: First Aid Kit
Yep....mostly use it on other folks (those that don't carry one)
The few times I needed it for me........I REALLY NEEDED IT!

I have three versions, depending on what I'm doing...one has a "Multi-directional Release Skin Stapler" (beats the hell out of a suture kit, not as versatile though)

RE: First Aid Kit
A couple of years ago somebody posted wanted to know the contents of your first aid kit. One answer was "a staple gun & a bag of weed".
Hope I never get hurt hiking with them.

RE: First Aid Kit
good grief, mtnsteve. Let's hope you don't need to use one very often. I carry a firstaid kit, that has been getting smaller as I gain experience and learn from other people. But I could never leave behind the ibuprophen, pepcid AC and imodium. I would definitely need the pain medicine, and the others are good in case the trail food is indigestable. Stuff for blisters and cuts. Tea bag for a small burn (wet the bag, tape it over the burn).

RE: First Aid Kit
Yep. Only had to use it on myself once, on others many times. I've never been sorry I had it.

RE: First Aid Kit
Yep, two versions for me. One is a little "overstocked", I carry it whenever I'm w the scouts. The second is my "personal" kit, weighs a lot less.

I carry it not just for me, but for others who may need help.

RE: First Aid Kit
I carry one. Stuff to handle little scrapes, a couple big trauma pads for when I get REALLY f-cked up, and the usual assortment of antibiotics, pain killers, and pepto.

yes - but it is rather minimal - finally decided I could do without the instant cold pack (grin)

RE: First Aid Kit
Absolutely: I have a micro kit 8 oz with some essentials for backpacking, bigger ones in the truck and cars, always handy. I even packed one at Disney World, fixed the cut knee in a few seconds and we were back on the rides, Lord knows how far/long to go to the official station.

RE: First Aid Kit
I always carry a basic one. I often hike with an EMT and it is a pre-trip ritual to get him to leave stuff behind.

Wish we'd had him on one trip when we met up with a thruhiker who took a nasty spill and thought he'd broken his elbow. He didn't want anyone but an EMT or better to look at it though so he hiked on.

RE: First Aid Kit
Yessuh. Wouldn't hit the trail without it. Now I just keep everuything in doubles layered freezer ziplock bags instead of the fancy shmancy OR bag I used to have. Less weight, waterproof and I can see everything.

I usually carry a roll of athletic tape and some gauze. You can fix anything from sprained ankles to punctures.

Yep. Most indespensible item is those little handi-wipes for post-wipe wiping. Vitamin I, too.

Got a couple of them. One is pretty minimal for when I'm solo. The other is for when I've got paying customers with me and is much more complete.

used to.
I went lightweight.

Now I only carry a flask of brandy.

All seriousness aside -- I did cut it down quite a bit after analysing the contents. The duct tape I normally carried anyway replaced the adhesive tape. The extra bandannas I always stuck in my pack replaced the bandages. Now my first aid kit is mostly pharmacy -- antibiotic cream, aspirin, tylenol, pepto, benadryl, etc. Haven't found a substitute for good ol' American drugs.

kleetn - Practically a staple too. To some, it's its own food group really.

RE: First Aid Kit
No. Which is okay, because I've never needed one.

There was the bear incident, however.
After Belle mixed it up with that griz in Delaware, I felt compelled to help the poor bugger. He was ripped across the lower incumbellum, and was bleeding profusely. I dug up some trout bones that I had buried earlier that night, and fashioned a needle using one of the fibudorso bones. I used a kudzu vine for suturage.

Since the bear was still unconscience, anesthesia was not necessary.

I packed the gaping wound with sasafrass leaves, and sewed him up under the illumination of my headlamp.

All the while, Sarabelle was gnawing on his ears. I couldn't help but to LOL.

...talk about goooooooood times!

RE: First Aid Kit
Laugh if you want, but if you bought $1,000 worth of Nortel stock one year ago, it would be worth $55 today.

If you bought $1,000 worth of Budweiser (the beer, not the stock) a year ago, drank it all and traded in the cans for the nickel deposit, you would have $79...and some great stories to tell!
