Road Closure In GSMNP
Highway 411 from near Sugarlands Visitor Center (outside of Gatlinburg,Tn) to Newfound Gap is scheduled to be close after Thanksgiving until sometime in March. This is so repair work can be done on the 2 tunnels. The notice said it would be open from Dec 22 thru early Jan for hoilday traffic. The highway from Cherokee, N.C. to Newfound Gap will remain open.

That is important news to my yearly winter hike. Thanks much, we'll plan around it. The rangers seem to like locking me in in bad weather. I've walked from the gate to the Visitors center several times to get them to let me out.

There are some GREAT approach trails.. don't let it stop you.. just plan for an additional day of hiking.

Personally, the Goshen Prong Trail is a really nice way to get up to the top.. and I have heard that the Sugarlands is nice also.. but check out your map.. It won't stop you, just give you a reason to enjoy another GREAT day in the park.

:)
