RE: Cold-weather Camping
The tent will stay warmer while its occupants are out of their bags.
Body heat and candles can make things relatively warm.
When you crawl into the bag so goes the heat.

Tarping it is good for winter as long as you keep the wind off your bag.
......and your sleeping bag too.

RE: Cold-weather Camping
If you have candles burning in a "closed" tent, doesn't the tent fill with smoke?

RE: Cold-weather Camping
If your candle smokes try trimin' the wick to 1/4 inch. It shouldn't smoke.

Cold to me is anything below zero degrees....which seems A LONG WAY OFF RIGHT NOW.......a few days ago it snowed on Mount Shasta...there was even a search for a missing climber who got lost in the white out...AND NOW ITS 103 #%^*#@% degrees!

Arrrrrrggggh

I'm better now.......

RE: Cold-weather Camping
I am going to New Hampshire this weekend, Friday thru Monday.

I have never really camped in cold weather (to me, that's anything below 45 or 50) and the forecast is for low- to mid-thirties at night.

I will be alone in a 3-man dome tent. (Hence my questions about body heat, tent size, etc. ) I may just try burning a couple of Nuwick "untippable" candles all night...or, more likely, I'll decide that it isn't necessary.

RE: Cold-weather Camping
Two suggestions for ya Fritz; good sleeping bag, hot hands. Put the hot hands in the sleeping bag about 15 minutes before climbing into it for the night.

RE: Cold-weather Camping
I read a bunch of cold weather stuff last year on some thread or other. One thing that I used was taking a big drink of water and eating a candy bar in the middle of the night when I got cold. Worked like magic.

I always thought that a winter tent had a full fly. We used to own a VE24 or 25. It had two windows that were round and closed with a pull cord. I think the idea was that if you were snowed in on one side you could tunnel out the other.

I am a lot happier with winter camping now that we have better clothing and better equipment. I used to find the winter nights too long--I guess I still do but since there is nothing to do about it it's a so it goes. A cold night in my desert might go down to 20 degrees.

Pathman,
Much thanks for the Outdoor Action link. What a gold mine! I've printed over 60 pages of info, plus about 750K in Adobe pages. Most of the info is kind of review for me, but I've never seen such a comprehensive list of great stuff. I'm indebted to you.

RE: Cold-weather Camping
I never had candles smoke up the tent.
I only burn them when sitting awake.

Then there was bakin' the tent!
Nuttin' wrong with that!

I like to ventilate as much as possible when I hit the sack to prevent the inner roof from frosting up too bad.

RE: Cold-weather Camping
I leave my Uco Candle Lantern on all night as it burns off most of the condensation off the roof. I also boil up an extra billy of water and stick it in a water bottle and shove it down the bottom of my sleeping bag an hour before I jump in it. It gives good drinkable water for the next day and toastie warm piggies at night.

RE: Cold-weather Camping
Cold weather camping - I thought the title meant winter cold, not mid 30's cold! I'm still sleeping in lean-tos at that temp. And I'll be doing just that in BSP this weekend.

Have fun! Don't burn yourself up with that candle lantern in your tent.

RE: Cold-weather Camping
I bring my -15 down bag, full ridgerest, emer blanket, smallest tent, wear a hat, clothes and clean socks, stuff my down vest at my feet, use chemical heat packs and fill a nalgene bottle with boiling water - thrown in the sleeping bag just before i get in.

We tent camp as a troop all year round.

Also empty your bladder before you get in and eat about 600 - 800 fal calories before bed.

You'll be toasty!

I've never left the candle lantern burning all night, but I do take a Nalgene bottle full of hot water to bed. Just makes sure that lid is on nice and tight!

We're really cold up here but

1) We have really cheap lobster

2) I only pay $3 to cut down my own Douglass Fir Christmas tree

3) We can spit on Canada from here (best part)
