Sorry” 9:38:32 PM 9/25/01 RE: 14 day AT hike “Don't you start school in late August? Get yourself an AT Data book and the Maps & guide books for that area.” 10:22:26 PM 9/25/01 RE: 14 day AT hike “School starts in september, after laybor day” 10:29:13 PM 9/25/01 RE: 14 day AT hike “Wow. Here it starts about mid August.” 10:33:37 PM 9/25/01 RE: 14 day AT hike “There's the thru-hikers companion (book) that will help you. You can get it at Campmor. If you can find one - I'll send you my old one. Where are you starting - ending??? NJ / NY no permits I know of. You are suppose to stay at / near shelters.” 6:38:02 AM 9/26/01 RE: 14 day AT hike “We start school in LATE JULY next year! (preplanning, anyway) But... We will get a week off in mid-October, one in late November, two in December/January, one in mid-Feburary, and one in March/April. That's gonna be our schedule for the forseeable future. It's almost as if this new "balanced calender" was designed with the needs of a backpacker in mind...” 8:43:27 AM 9/26/01 RE: 14 day AT hike “BTW - Why not put four travel days aside, and do a ten-dayer out west?” 8:46:01 AM 9/26/01 RE: 14 day AT hike “Tea - The AT through New York is pretty boring and not too scenic. Connecticut is nice up near the Massachusetts border. Both states get alot of foot traffic and as there are many road crossings, they have pretty tough regulations to keep out the keg-party types. I can understand you wanting to stay closer to home for support/travel. I'd suggest starting around High Point, NJ and heading south into Pennsylvania. You'll get better scenery and except for maybe 15 miles on the Pennsy side of the Delaware, you'll be in less populated areas. The regulations change as you move along the trail so check them for each section. There are parts of NJ where you can camp along the trail, others you have to stay at shelters or designated sites. Pennsy is less regulated, particularly on state game lands. Your first planning resource is the AT Data Book which is only a few dollars and tells you distances, trailheads, water sources & shelters. After that get the maps and guidebooks for the areas you'll be hiking. If you can travel a bit, go up into Vermont - it's worth the trip. Lotsa info and links in theses sites: AT Site AT Conference” 11:31:22 AM 9/26/01 RE: 14 day AT hike “Thanks guys, my friend allready bought the maps for the area, so I don't want to make him change it. Keg parties, damn. I hope they don't bother me.” 2:03:55 PM 9/26/01 RE: 14 day AT hike “So you are really asking how to get a keg from the trailhead to your campsite? You've obviously asked the right group! lol” 2:20:14 PM 9/26/01 RE: 14 day AT hike “some nut uses a handtruck!!!” 3:06:12 PM 9/26/01 RE: 14 day AT hike “First off, hi to walkin dude...I met him on the shuttle in NH back in August. I have to agree Violin with hiking in Vermont vs NY. I grew up in NY and the trail is practically a highway their is so much traffic. PA is nice too. If you hike up north bring a winter hat because the nights get cool at higher elevations. Finally instead of a keg of beer try a quart of Jack Danials....LOL. Good luck on whatever you decide. Stay dry and warm and watch out for hungry racoons.” 6:36:48 PM 9/26/01 RE: 14 day AT hike “Hand trucks - yeah, that's the ticket!” 6:43:01 PM 9/26/01 RE: 14 day AT hike “WAZZZZZZUP Ravenseer! I wondered if yall was ever gonna jump on this site!” 6:56:38 PM 9/26/01 RE: 14 day AT hike “I have an iternery mapped out for the NJ AT. We did that as a trip for the girls on an off summer. What really sucks is that part of the AT is actually on roads for about 4 miles about 40 miles north of the gap. Check the maps - as far as I know they didnt get the land yet to re-route it. But north of there is pretty. Very easy.” 9:56:49 PM 9/26/01 RE: 14 day AT hike “This trip just fell through. One of my friends mother said that we need an over 18 year old with us. Or all our parents would be screwed with endagring the well being of a minor.” 12:06:16 PM 10/01/01 RE: 14 day AT hike “sheesh Tea, that sucks. I guess its good that your parents care, but... seems a bit stiffling. When I was sixteen, I was "lucky" to even see a parent once a week! Of course, look how I turned out... =:0 muahahaaa” 3:55:36 PM 10/01/01 RE: 14 day AT hike “Don't give up yet!! Tea have you thought about finding any over eighteen guys that may have "aged-out" of you troop to go with? How about any of the guys from OA or maybe a local Venture crew. Remember in Ventures and OA you are considered a youth up til 21. I'm sure you could find someone thats over eighteen that you wouldn't mind hiking with.” 4:16:10 PM 10/01/01 RE: 14 day AT hike “Maybe Chip is free?” 11:04:42 AM 10/02/01 RE: 14 day AT hike “We are planning to do PA/NJ during Easter vacation with the troop - maybe we can work something out. Keep it in mind Also there are 3 openings for Philmont in our council for 2002 if you are interested. Email me if you are interested” 12:53:12 PM 10/02/01
