US Industry killing Americans, no action
Recent attacks by terrorists killed approximately 6000+ lives in revenge for US policies in the Middle East. Enraged Americans demand justice and retaliation.

Each year industries in the USA kill thousands of Americans for the mere excuse to make money. 400,000 die each year at the hands of the Tobacco industry.
19,000 die in alcohol related deaths, and another 16,000 in DUI fatalities...many innocent lives. Where is the same outrage at the Alcohol industry? Is it ok for US industries to kill Americans so long as money is being made?

I think they are two seperate things but I do understand your outrage.

"Where is the same outrage at the Alcohol industry?"

Well, that's an odd way of thinking about it, If I smoke cigarettes and die of lung cancer, the tobacco industry did it!!?? No, I did it to myself by smoking the cigarettes. Same if I drink until my liver is gone, I made that choice...not the manufacturer that made the drink. Much different, I don't think the folks that died in the trade center disaster chose to be where the airplane was going to crash, do you?

I agree with Bpbaby. Just one point: If you wrap yourself around a tree it's your own damn fault. If you take someone else out with you, then it's still your own damn fault, but your dogpiss.

I may not be that much fun at parties, but it would not be the first time I've been the only one sober enough to drive somebodies drunken ass home. Just don't puke in the car.

RE: US Industry killing Americans, no action
But did that tobacco industry tell the truth about your health and the dangers of smoking? Is tobacco addictive? Can those cigarettes be made without the addictive nicoteine? Do people who contract disease from second-hand smole deserve to die? Do innocent people who were not drinking deserve to be killed by a drunk? If crashing planes is BAD!, why not blame the airline industry for running the show which allows lax security at airports?

RE: US Industry killing Americans, no action
Let's see if I've got this right: Guns should be outlawed because people use them to kill one another; the Anerican diet is creating a society of obese people who overindulge in junk food; tobacco kills when people harvest it, manufacture tobacco products, inhale the toxins those products produce; alcohol kills when people consume too much, when people drive drunk; airlines kill when people fail to adequately screen for security risks; ad naseum.

The common thread here is that all of these activities involve PEOPLE. PEOPLE are not noted for posessing large amounts of common sense or innate inteligence, and they sometimes do things, purposefully or inwittingly, that hurt other PEOPLE.

Life is full of risks and peril. Some we take on willingly; some are thrust on us against our will. If you want a risk-free world where you have a reasonable guarantee of living to ripe old age in relative safety, you have three choices. You can either hole up somewhere and never see the light of day, you can pass more and more laws in the name of safety and security that will continue to erode our rights, or you can eradicate the root of all the problems, which is PEOPLE.

Or, you can sit around and blame the world around you for all of society's ills.

Lighten up, man. It's not a perfect world, nor will it ever be until a more enlightened species than homo sapiens takes over.

Steiny, so what your saying is personal responsibility, or lack of it, it the root of many of the problems? Or, are people really that dumb?

RE: US Industry killing Americans, no action
There probably isn't a single root cause to all the world's and America's problems. A short list would include:

Lack of personal resposibility. Lack of social responsibility. Selfishness. Unenlightened self-interst. Stupidity. Overpopulation and the fights over dwindling resources. Just plain bad people.

We can pass all the repressive laws we want, and we still won't get rid of all the problems. People = problems. There ain't no way around it. As my friend says, God is up in heaven saying, "Creature with free will and self-actualization: seemed like a good idea but it didn't work."

The Incas had a cradle-to-grave society that makes Sweden look like anarchy. Among their laws: If a man stole a loaf of bread just because he wanted more, he was put to death. If he stole a loaf because the government official responsible for feeding him had failed to do so, that official was put to death. As intriguing as that may sound, every aspect of their society was governed by laws to keep all the people in check. Didn't work then; ain't gonna work now.

RE: US Industry killing Americans, no action
Lack of personal responsibility? Of corporations such as Ford and Firestone for failing to pull a known defective and deadly product from the market?

Lack of social responsibility? Like the corporations feeding garbage to the masses?
Selfishness...like Microsoft? Unenlightened self-interest...like gun owners and manufacturers? Stupidity...like smokers? Overpopulation and the fights over dwindling resources...like oil? US companies are addicted to it.

Just plain bad people? ...the majority of Americans.

"If crashing planes is BAD!, why not blame the airline industry for running the show which allows lax security at airports?"

Oh hell yeah. We and the airlines dropped the ball but this is no reason to displace all blame from the mass murders to the airline. BTW- If the airline stepped on their dix so bad, can you post copies of your letters to the airlines warning them of their lax security? Hind sight's 20/20, ey?

You've been a busy boy tonight Spock. 8) Have a great day and eat some kim chie (SP?) for me.

I just seen a cool anti-tobbaco add. The extent of it was "how can we keep a strong industry when we are killing 400,000 of our best customers every year".
Just some food for thought.
