I'm doing a three mile hike to benefit ALS on Sunday.

Max and the boys are having a "boys weekend" - car camping on a pal's property. Since I'm a gal, I'm not invited! Oh well.

Cal, where ya goin'? Never got to tell you, I took your advice and day hiked up to Tangle Blue, nice place, but while rounding the lake I ended up in Tangle Green or thick brush, I guess I gotta do that once or twice a year to keep my bushwackin' skills keen. I got a nice 3-dayer coming up in a week and a half in Desolation. I'll probably do some trips into Nov - Dec up in the Alps and Marbles weather permitting.

RE: whatch'all doin' this here weekend
What a great kayak trip! We (Craig, Steve, and I) dropped one of our two vehicles at the Sandy Point boat ramp, on the Sante Fe River, about 7:45am Sunday. We got to the Ichtucknee headsprings a little after 8:00 and were the only people there. The Ichetucknee is a clear, quick flowing stream with a sandy bottom. It?s called a river, although it?s only from about ten to thirty feet wide for almost it?s entire five and a half mile run. The Ichetucknee is continuously fed by springs that keep the current moderately strong, and the water crystal clear and 72-degrees year round.. Craig and I have gone on a few kayak trips together but Steve had never been on one. Steve is a ?city boy? and hadn?t even seen these rivers before. Craig and I were excited to be sharing what we thought would be a great trip with a first timer. We got Steve situated in his boat. He floated away from the dock and, sploosh! He rolled right over. We were able to get his inevitable baptism out of the way early and had a good laugh too. The ?tuck was beautiful at that time of morning. We floated peacefully down river, except for Steve who kept careening into the vegetation on either side of the river. We could see the bright green river grass, with patches of sandy white bottom shining a pretty blue color, through the crystal clear water. The sun came down through the tree canopy at a low angle, creating sparkling patches on the water?s surface. We explored a couple of springs along the way, gliding over 20 foot sandy bottomed circles, but mostly just floated with the current in the main river. The day became incredibly beautiful. A bright blue sky, no clouds, with the temperature about 75-77. There was a nice breeze blowing though the trees and there wasn?t a soul on the river except us. The 72-degree spring water felt nice and warm. We stopped for lunch at the S.R. 27 bridge about 11:30. I had brought a rosemary baguette and some good cheese from a local bakery. That stuff tastes so good when you?re out on the river. We stopped to switch kayaks below the bridge. Steve flipped his boat coming into the sandy shore. I had already used up all my film or I would have had a nice shot of him getting wet again. We floated until we reached the end of the Ichetucknee where it meets the Sante Fe River. The river widened and the water changed from crystal clear to the tea color of many rivers in this area. The tea color coming from the tannic released from all of the vegetation along the banks of a slow moving river. We saw a couple of boats along this section, but for the most part we had the river to ourselves. The ramp where we had left our second vehicle was about 4 miles down river. Steve still hadn?t got the hang of paddling and we went pretty slowly. There are some nice sandy banks along this section and we stopped a couple of time just to enjoy the day. Steve was starting to get tired, but as we saw the boat ramp come into view, he put on a burst of speed and his technique improved dramatically. We got into shore at 3:00pm. Steve was pretty tired, and as he went to get out of his kayak, he got his feet all tangled up in it. Sploosh! He did an, arms wide, face plant right into the water. There was a boatload of people going past right at that moment so he had a nice audience. He came up laughing, and we all started to laugh so hard our stomachs hurt. I couldn?t drink anything for a while because we couldn?t stop laughing. We all had a great time and Steve can?t wait to go with us on our next trip down the Rainbow River (another clear river) in two weeks. It was a beautiful day with good friends.

RE: whatch'all doin' this here weekend
I heard a real interesting tidbit about Barry Bond's bats. They're made of maple instead of ash. Closer grain, harder wood, less apt to break.

Spent all weekend canning toms and drying herbs, gleaning what could be from the garden and garage sales (kid clothes). In an effort to be outside for a bit I actually washed windows. It was too beautiful to be home inside. Next weekend will probably be crappy and we'll be up north.

stix4legs must have seen a lot of bikes if he went to the San Juan Islands where to catch the ferry, you go to Anacortes where I was for the Anacortes Oyster run.

It was great ride. The hwys were covered with bikes coming from every direction. In Anacortes the town was full of leather as far as the eye could see.

On the way to Anacortes, bikers stopped in restaurant/bars everywhere that offered oysters served in different styles. Lookingglass & I did not drink any liquor, and never would while riding.

RE: whatch'all doin' this here weekend
This weekend (starting Friday) I'm off to Yosemighty to meet up with some friends for five days of bping and exploration. Oh boy. My first time there. Can't wait!!

Last weekend, was exploration of the Central Coast inc. Big Sur. I was at a board retreat in Asilomar (a historic state-run conference center), so my girly drove down and met up with me on the nice white sand beach next to the facilities. It was a full-on Bo Derek "10" embrace.

We shot down the coast about 30 miles to Andrew Molera state park that had a walk-in camp site with room for 100 tents. Not ideal (we thought at the time) but the beach, situated about another 2/3 of a mile from the campground was a perfect example of untouched CA coastline. Just beautiful.

We continued our trek down US 1 the next day, stopping in the various state parks along the way. All booked all the way down to San Simeon (Hearst Castle). We killed some time on various beautiful beaches before heading back up the coast, checking at the parks along the way to see if anything had opened up. Hurrah. One site left at the 220-site Pfeiffer-Big Sur state park. Imagine our dismay when we pulled in to a friggin' parking lot. Seriously. That's what this space was, directly across from an in-park convenience store and laundro-mat. No trees. Concrete and gravel with two iron manhole covers sticking up and sounds from the bathroom intermixing with the screaming of little kids on their bikes. It took all of two minutes to realize it wasn't going to work. We got a refund (I didn't even get the word refund out of my mouth before the ranger was pulling cash out of the register) and we headed back to Molera State Park. Nice coastline. Great weather. But man, do I hate crowds. Hope Yosemite ain't like that...

roseymonster, I vacationed a block up from the Asilmar Conference grounds a few months ago. I love Pacific Grove. I used to walk down to the beach and sit in front of a dune with a bottle of wine and garlic stuffed olives everynight watching the sunset. This place is so romantic without even trying.

I went back again to Pacific Grove and stayed at Borg's Waterfront Hotel on the other side of the beach.

While I was there I kayaked Monterey Bay and the Elkhorn Slough in Monterey.

Friday we got a little company gig with a live band, Earth Wind & Fire, anyone ever here of 'em? Best band to play at work since Stevie Wonder a few years ago, but that was before I worked there. After the show it's into SF for dinner and copious amounts of alcohol. Depending on how I feel Saturday I may drive up to Tahoe and do an overnighter into Desolation. Sunday it's out of the backcountry and into S. Lake Tahoe to watch some football and place a few small wagers on the games.

Leaving tomorrow night for Zion National Park. Will camp out at the backcountry desk window Thursday night so we can get a camping permit in the Virgin River Narrows for Saturday. The window opens at 7am and people generally show up around 4am to get the very coveted permits.

Friday, wedding planning and meeting with resturants for a rehersal dinner location in Zion. Friday night treating ourselves to a hotel room for a good night's sleep.
Saturday meeting shuttle at 5:30am to drop us off at the top of the Virgin River. Saturday-Sunday backpacking the Virgin River Narrows.
