Helio Tarp? “For our upcoming Big Cypress hike we're considering a Helio Tarp from Walrus in lieu of a tent. Idea is to use it as a groundcloth that can create an overhead shelter as well, if we need to. The weight is appealing (2 lbs for a 16 x 16 tarp), but we wonder whether it can take the abuse of being a groundcloth. Anybody have any experience with it? How about other recommendations?” 3:36:20 PM 9/27/01 RE: Helio Tarp? “I recomed a tent or a Hennessy Hammock for Big Cypress, the bugs are thick there. Don't know what time of the year your planning your trip, but right now we're getting copious amounts of rain here in South FL which may mean the water will hang around for a while out there, but that will depend on the rest of the year.” 5:08:25 PM 9/27/01 RE: Helio Tarp? “Thanks, Fasttimes, We'll be there Christmas week. I figured the bugs might be down by then. If not, we'll go with a tent as you suggest.” 10:34:05 PM 9/27/01 RE: Helio Tarp? “I was at a festival last year and passed a campsite that had a HUGE helio tarp, and couldn't help stopping in to chat. The dude got it for cheap, can't remember how much, but the thing provided shade that could hold a picnic table and whatnot. I dug it. I wouldn't use it as a groundcloth, though, but if I got a good deal on one, I'd jump on it.” 12:25:18 AM 9/28/01 RE: Helio Tarp? “Far as I know the Helio Tarp only comes in one size. There are other similar designs made of similar materials, like the Moss Parawings which can cover as much as 200 square feet. Why wouldn't you use it as a groundcloth?” 11:52:55 AM 9/28/01 RE: Helio Tarp? “I think if I layed down $100 for a tarp, I wouldn't want to risk punching holes in it by using it as a ground cloth. Why not use that Tyveck (sp?) vapor barrier construction product for a ground cloth? It seems to be all the rage with the ultralight crowd. Cheap and weighs next to nothing. That's what I would use, and save the tarp for when you need the shelter. If you get the tarp, be sure and let us know how it works out for you.” 1:35:17 PM 9/28/01 RE: Helio Tarp? “Hello Tarp.” 2:29:50 PM 9/28/01 RE: Helio Tarp? “Sounds like a good suggestion, BobK. Do you know where to find that stuff?” 4:22:20 PM 9/28/01 RE: Helio Tarp? “Here's the Link to the Tyvek "HouseWrap" website. Look for the contact info, and I am sure they can direct you to a local retailer in your area. An even more elegant solution. Look for a residential construction site and visit right as they are installing the stuff (goes on right after the exterior sheathing board). Ask where to find the product and chances are they will have enough left over to give you what you need.” 4:54:58 PM 9/28/01
