My computer is screwed up.View MessagesViewing posts 1 to 17 of 17 messages posted.
My computer is screwed up. “My computer lost it's mind & won't let me boot up. I got it reloading the hard drive again now. Hope it works. I can't get my e-mail right now. If reloading the hard drive don't help I'll have to get another computer. Bad thing is, I'll loose all the songs I got from Napster and all my e-mail addresses, phone #'s, & all that. On the bright side, I've actually gotten a few things done around the house that I've been too preoccupied to finish before.” 11:24:05 PM 9/29/01 RE: My computer is screwed up. “I've lost my e-mails( ask dunk), pictures etc. numerous times. I now export my addresses, favorite list and pictures to a disk” 12:23:07 AM 9/30/01 RE: My computer is screwed up. “Man, I hate when that happens! This little program has been a life saver to me... ICQ Backup it backs up you mail, address and favorites, all with a click of the mouse. It's shareware, but they work on the honor system.... that and a CD-RW have saved my butt more times than I want to think about...oh yea, if you use ICQ check this out.... ICQ Backup” 12:43:39 AM 9/30/01 RE: My computer is screwed up. “Oooops, that first link points to E-Backup, not ICQ rescue.” 12:45:33 AM 9/30/01 RE: My computer is screwed up. “Thanks Steve, Great site” 1:02:55 AM 9/30/01 RE: My computer is screwed up. “ya.. i have crashed HDs so many times I have learned to either keep backup images, or be ready to kiss convenience goodbye..” 1:42:16 AM 9/30/01 RE: My computer is screwed up. “WD, once you can get into windows I would make a boot disk. This disk is so if your computer crashes and you can't get into windows it will bring you into dos. And dos is better then a vegitable. Then back up your favorites list, ICQ list. Dirrections on how to make a boot disk: put a floppy disk in the drive Start Settings Controll pannle Add Remove Programs Click on one of the top tabes that says "start up disk" click on creat. ------- Backing up Internet Explore Favorites: Put a zip disk or a floppy in its appropreat drive in IE click File import and export next click on "Export Favorites" next now it askes you to tell it where to save them to. Click brows and look for your floppy drive or your Zip drive. Once you have saved then it should be an HTML document labled "BOOKMARK.HTML" ----- Backing up ICQ, look at the ICQ web site. I don't have time to tell you something that you can figure out your self.” 10:50:31 AM 9/30/01 RE: My computer is screwed up. “Back it up somewhere, or just assume you will lose it eventually. Hard drives fail and some failures are permanent. We have three computers networked together at home and all on DSL. Sometimes we just copy files to another computer as an additional backup. It only takes a few seconds. I bought my son a 30 gig hard drive just for that purpose...however, he uses it for big downloads.” 11:04:53 AM 9/30/01 RE: My computer is screwed up. “I agree with Phil. I've been lucky all these years, but I work at a computer shop and see people lose their data all the time. It's easy and cheap to backup with CD-RW.” 12:51:49 PM 9/30/01 RE: My computer is screwed up. “What exactly happens? Does the Bios load? Does windows attempt to load? How far does it get? Any error messages? What version of windows are you running? What was the last thing you installed or did before it stopped working? If you answer these questions, then I might be able to help out or at least tell you if your screwed. Even if the OS is corrupt, chances are you can repair it or reinstall without losing data. IF it's more then that, then you still could reformat and not have to buy a new system, so don't go out procing just yet.” 9:07:03 PM 9/30/01 RE: My computer is screwed up. “WD, Are you using another machine to access this board? Is your home machine trying (in vain) to locate a file (ie SirC.exe or sCam.exe) needed to launch applications? If so, you've got a virus. Go to Symantec's website (on another machine, of course) and download their fixes for those bugs to a floppy, take it home and start your machine with the disk in the drive.” 9:57:15 AM 10/01/01 RE: My computer is screwed up. “I'm BACK!!! I had to do the Non-Destructive Hard Drive reload. Took a little while for me to get back going again. I did loose my e-mail addresses. I'll get 'em back over time. Can some of yall e-mail me back at markdmoore@home.com so I'll be able to put ya back in my address book again. Thanks for the info on saving stuff. I'll deffinatly do that. WD” 6:52:07 PM 10/01/01 RE: My computer is screwed up. “I wanted to mention a site that can help those of you that like to play with your system, increase your start up resources tremendously, and possibly stop your system from crashing so much. Start Up Page I went from 84 % resources on start up to 96 %. I have a friend that bought a new computer and was having problems with it locking up...it was starting out with 62 % resources right after boot up....now she's got 92%. Try it!” 11:45:37 AM 10/02/01 RE: My computer is screwed up. “DANG! My Outlook Express is still screwed up! Can't get E-mail yet. I HATE COMPUTERS!!!!!!!!!!” 11:56:16 PM 10/02/01 RE: My computer is screwed up. “Depending on what version you have you may be able to go into add/remove programs, hit remove for Microsoft Internet Explorer and Internet tools and a screen will pop up that asks if you want to repair IE..sometimes this will help.....if the repair screen doesn?t come up be careful, I removed IE once before because I screwed up. You may also be able to go into Windows Update files (or sometimes in Program files and open Internet Explorer) and hit on setup, then choose full install, and make sure you check Outlook Express, then reinstall the files. Of course you could also just download IE 6, which seems to work fine for me....the download is anywhere from 12 to 17 meg's. I suspect you know most of this stuff, but just incase......” 12:29:37 AM 10/03/01 RE: My computer is screwed up. “There's a nasty e-mail virus spreading through our state system. Called SIRCam I believe. Watch out for suspicious e-mails with attachments -- it steals identities and mimics recent subject lines so it looks like a legit message. It will hide in a variety of files and can get addresses from your inbox, outbox, sent box, as well as your address book. When it goes off, it starts spewing infected e-mails from your PC to anyone it can. May reveal itself with a double ending to the file name, the last part being .exe They finally got my office PC disinfected yesterday and the WISNET system finally let my machine back on the mail network this afternoon.” 2:43:51 PM 10/03/01 RE: My computer is screwed up. “I've got e-mail again! God I hate computers though! Such a pain.” 11:32:11 PM 10/03/01
