HOT winter hiking
looking for warm weather hiking in Feb-March. Been to Big Bend, Grand Canyon, Everglades at these times and were great, but looking for someplace new. Mexico, Calif, New Mex,??? Any suggestions? From Michigan.

RE: HOT winter hiking
We thought of death valley. Have you been there? What type of terrain? Trails or just head out? Water? Trail heads? We went by there just this year on the way to burning man. Wish now the we would have taken a strip through just to see.

RE: HOT winter hiking
I would vote for the Superstitions. Start at the western trailhead and head east, there's some limited looping available. When I was there, trailhead break-ins were a huge concern so be careful.
Death Valley, always a fun place in winter but it can snow in the mountains surrounding Death Valley. Peaks on the west side top out at over 11,000' and the mountains on the east are around 6,000'.

Good dayhikes for DV are Golden Canyon, Natural Bridge, Darwin Falls, and Mosaic Canyon. A good backpacking trip would be Fall Canyon, but with almost all DV hiking, some rock scrambling will be necessary.
Marble Canyon and Cottonwood canyon are definately not worth the very long, rough, and technical 4-wheel drive trek up the dry river bed.
Check out the sand dunes at sunset and the crater for great photo ops. Also, Titus canyon road is really fun and interesting.

Ocala National Forest in north-central Florida. It's completely different up here. Average daily temperature, in the winter, is 68 degrees.

I would also recommend St. Joseph Peninsula around the bend in the Florida peninsula. That's some beautiful beach hiking.

Never been there, but Cumberland Island on the Florida/Georgia border is also supposed to be pretty.

Arclite, Cumberland Island is great. I have also heard that Toreya SP in the Panhandle is better than Ocala. Haven't been yet but I'm planning on it soon.

RE: HOT winter hiking
Superstitions (Phoenix AZ):

Volrac, I like the Tortilla Flats trail in the Superstitions (didn't see anyone on it and we did it in the winter. Winter is very popular out there since it's 110 in the summer..). Oh, you need a high clearance vehicle to get out there (there is one particularily sticky spot)..

If you want to do something that everyone does, go up the Peralta Trail to the saddle for a view of Weaver's needle. Keep going if you like and camp on top of Weaver's or just hike and camp around it (there are a couple of Class 4 routes up it. Stop at the local REI in Tempe and get a route map before you go..Be careful, lots of rocks to pull on top of you. My relatives did it...missed the trip though). Another popluar day hike- go up Siphon Draw (nice and shaded the whole way up. Good view of Phoenix/the needle from up top).

Or for something different try to find the Cave/Lost Dutchman's trails-which run parallel to the Peralta Trail and are Class 3 scrambles). I liked this hike. There are supposedly some petroglyphs or petrographs (can never remember the diff) along the way, but didn't have time to look for them.

I also like Reavis Ranch...NICE indian ruins out there..very cool.

Shoot there's a lot to do! Be ready to run into trail dogs, though. It's right next to Phoenix & civiilization.

Lots of folklore about the 'lost treasure' out there. Read one of the books (there are several good ones) before you go out there so you will be thoroughly freaked out about running into weirdos out there (there is one one living at the base of Weaver's, according to my brother. Still looking for lost treasure or someone to murder or something)...

RE: HOT winter hiking
hey volrac

If you come out to AZ for HOT winter hiking, you might as well see some cool indian ruins! I like the Sierra Anchas outside of Globe AZ. There is a 3 story cliff dwelling in Devils chasm that is really neat..

Seriously, if you come out here I will even meet you and hike w/ ya!

RE: HOT winter hiking
Sounds like a great offer Biz. It always seems to get back to Az for some reason. Lots of opportunities I guess. Superstitions get a lot of votes also. Thanks everyone for the feedback. I will be researching. Hey, whenever you guys get a chance you might want to try Isle Royale in Michigan. One of the Best hikes in my part of the world.
