One of my creative writing students is on a "countdown" to Tori's upcoming Minneapolis show at the Orpheum. I now have the distinction of knowing what brand of piano Tori plays -- the things one can learn from students. Have fun Dawg!!

RE: Tori Amos
Enjoy you lucky Dawg!!
I think Tori is brilliant. I wanted to get tickets for her Boston show, but I tickets went on sale and sold out while I was in a meeting.
I also appreciate the fun of going with your son. I am taking one of my sons to see Bjork in two weeks (his choice).

RE: Tori Amos
Ped, you lucky guy! Bjork is way cool! I'm just getting my first listens to her new album. It's a long way from here to any decent concert venue and not only do I not have that 20-yr-old body Dawg seeks for enjoying the concerts themselves, I don't have the youthful stamina for a long down-and-back drive. Concerts get expensive once you need a really nice hotel and dinner as part of the plan, LOL.

I never heard of her till I got a Led Zepplin tribute CD called "Encomium". She did a duet with Robert Plant of "Down By The Seaside" that was incrediburgable, to say the least.

RE: Tori Amos
I dunno what color her hair will be this time, but the combination of her looks, her brilliance, passion, creativity, eloquence and the way she straddles a piano bench is... inspiring.

Pekka: My son (13) has this fixation on brilliant, creative, talented and unusual women: Bjork is definitely all that. He had a pic of her with the swan suit in his Junior High year book.

One advantage of being back in Mass and within a couple of minutes of the subway is getting to concerts like this. The downside is the Boston concerts sell out so fast. For Bjork, I had to be on line for a "special internet pre-sale" and had to struggle through jammed circuits to get a 1/2 decent set of tix. They sold out in an hour.

Back in New Hampshire, I could drop by the box offfice any time on the day tickets went on sale and get fantastic seats. Of course, we only got a few decent concerts a year.

The Ryman auditorium in Nashville is a great venue. I will have my binoculars, but we will be up close and personal.

Yes PedXing, she does have a most provocative way of 'playing' the piano, and the crowd.

heh.. I was wondering the same.. cos she mentioned a few places.. Not sure where she grew up.. but I know it was in west NC.. and her pappa.. (actually her grandpa).. lived in VA.. she mentioned periwinkle and some 'gay-something.. gayla, gaylite?'

And she mentioned right where VA and TN and NC meets.. I was soo tempted to invite her to come hike with us sometime.

RE: Tori Amos
After many years of thinking that Tori's "I live the life of the slave" songs and the fact that she fakes orgasms during concerts were the only issue I had with the woman, I visited my son?s High School. It was here where I was exposed to the collection of girls with badly dyed red hair, crushed velvet pants, poor piano skills, and a great need for attention, that you may have come to know as TORI GIRLS. Contrary to popular belief, others did not wish that these girls would be their friends, they were not jealous of their "obvious individuality". The only thing that concerned me about these girls (besides that fact that they wore crushed velvet...) was that they seemed to all be just a little too into Tori Amos. I learned from these girls that one can not be just a casual fan of Tori, but must hang onto her every word, as though it were the bread of life. Her fans have this tendency to regard all the things that drop randomly out of her head as her 'genius'! I decided then and there, that if Tori Amos is the bread of life, than I am the Queen of England. I could not see what this woman did that made these girls turn into walking talking Tori Amos clones.

Finally, I realized that I really hated how these girls could be so influenced by a record company?s answer to the early 90's alternative music scene. Her music is histrionic, shrill, forced, sort of like one huge PMS session and just plain off somehow. My mind is boggled by all of this blathering to say the least. I?m sorry, basturds, but she is as relevant as Hootie and the Blowfish!

RE: Tori Amos
TORI GIRLS???...gimme a break! You just described 99% of highskool-age girls, Ms.Laura. What about the Pat Benetars', Madonnas', the Marilyn Manson chicks, etc., etc., etc. That syndrome, if that's what it is, was, is and always will be...depending on which female musician influences/moves them the most. Frankly, there isn't anything wrong with it!

What musical female did you idolize, dress like and have their pictures plastered all over yer walls? Mmmmm...Forget what it's like to be a adolescent?

RE: Tori Amos
i know this is blasphemy, but her recent effort, "strange little girls," is piss poor. i could've done better on my casio keyboard. the cover songs of her most recent album cannot compare to the brilliance she showed when covering "angie," "thank you" and "smells like teen spirit" on the crucify single.

RE: Tori Amos
I don't argue that point. I think everyone would agree that her early works are the most memorable.

(except for the folks that don't like her to start off with)

In the concert? Most of what she played WAS the older material tho.

RE: Tori Amos
I've never heard Tori Amos's non-available first album: "Y Tori Kant Read." But the next two albums ("Little Earthquakes" and "In the Pink")were her very best.. . She has never equalled them, and probably never will. On the whole, she has gone steadily down hill... but not nearly as badly as our Dr. Laura.

I've only heard a few things on "Strange Little Girls" and they were OK...

Similar thing happened with Sara McLachlan: Her second album ("Fumbling Towards Ecstacy") was absolutely brilliant. Her follow up ("surfacing") was still pretty good... but nothing she has done has touched "Ecstacy."

RE: Tori Amos
Tori amos had a 'god' song out at the same time as a few other folks. I thought it was fun to compare/contrast

Tori Amos
God
Under the Pink

God sometimes you just don't come through
God sometimes you just don't come through
Do you need a woman to look after you
God sometimes you just don't come through

You make pretty daisies pretty daisies love
I gotta find what you're doing about things here
A few witches burning gets a little toasty here
I gotta find why you always go when the wind blows
Tell me you're crazy maybe then I'll understand
You got your 9 iron in the back seat just in case
Heard you've gone south well babe you love your new 4 wheel
I gotta find why you always go when the wind blows

(Give not thy strength unto women nor thy ways to that which destroyeth kings)

Will you even tell her if you decide to make the sky fall
Will you even tell her if you decide to make the sky

God sometimes you just don't come through
God sometimes you just don't come through
Do you need a woman to look after you
God sometimes you just don't come through

There was The Crash Test Dummies "god shuffled his feet"

God Shuffled His Feet"

After seven days
He was quite tired so God said:
"Let there be a day
Just for picnics, with wine and bread"
He gathered up some people he had made
Created blanket and laid back in the shade

The people sipped their wine
And what with God there, they asked him questions
Like: do you have to eat
Or get your hair cut in heaven?
And if your eye got poked out in this life
Would it be waiting up in heaven with your wife?

God shuffled his feet and glanced around at them;
The people cleared their throats and stared right back at him

So he said:"Once there was a boy
Who woke up with blue hair
To him it was a joy
Until he ran out into the warm air
He thought of how his friend would come to see;
And would they laugh, or had he got some strange disease?

God shuffled his feet and glanced around at them;
The people cleared their throats and stared right back at him

The people sat waiting
Out on their blankets in the garden
But God said nothing
So someone asked him:"I beg your pardon:
I'm not quite clear about what you just spoke
What that a parabole, or a very subtile joke?"

God shuffled his feet and glanced around at them;
The people cleared their throats and stared right back at him

The song sung by Joan Osborne "one of us"

"One Of Us"
(Music & Lyrics by Eric Bazilian)
If God had a Name, what would it be and would You call it to His face if You were faced with Him in all His Glory, what would You ask if You had just One Question...

b{}
Yeah, yeah- God is Great
Yeah, yeah- God is Good
Yeah, yeah- yeah (3x)

chorus{}
What if God was one of Us?
Just a slob like one of Us?
Just a Stranger on a bus, trying to make His way Home...

If God had a Face, what would it look like and would You want to See if seeing meant that You would have to Believe in things like Heaven and in Jesus and the Saints and all the Prophets and...

b{}
chorus{}
Tryin' to make his way Home
Back up to Heaven all alone...
Nobody callin' on the phone
'Cept for the Pope maybe in Rome...

-elec guitar SOLO-

b{}
chorus{}
Just tryin' to make his way Home
Like a holy rolling stone...
Back up to Heaven all alone
Just tryin' to make his way Home
Nobody callin' on the phone
'Cept for the Pope maybe in Rome..................

They all got radio play around the same time . . .thought they made some fun irrevent statements about the whole god thing.

My son 17 year old son went to see Tori Amos concerty Sunday night. They had a contest for six audience members to sing a Tori song - and whoever got the best response from the audience would get moved up to excellent seats. They asked for contest. He got accepted to the contest and then he won! His first performance for a large audience is a success. They got mover up to row 6 and the gal who went with him was way impressed.
